As invasive and sometimes even evil Google is, I really love their Street View project. I love sitting down and looking at the streets of other countries. Plus not only is it incredibly useful in the present when you're planning a trip, but it's going to create a fantastic history of the world as time goes on. I also remember a time when Google Maps had angled satellite views of most places, and you could spin the camera around in 90° increments. That was quite useful as well. Unfortunately, they hid the feature several years back when they introduced the crappy blobby Google Earth mode.

Would be interesting to mount that atop a small plane and fly it around for pilots, and for lower altitude sightseeing. There are planes licensed Experimental where this would not be as hard to do. Email me for details.

Drones bro. Part 137 is where it’s at for any future aero imaging. Amazon will have their own drone program delivering to a locking box in your yard soon. Not hard to imagine where Google will go with that. There’s a reason they haven’t asked flight schools to strap these to their 172s or Emirates to share their low altitude landing gear cam footage yet 🤣

You really don't need Google's rig to take pictures for Street View. You can strap an "Insta 360 One X" (weight: 115g) to your car, bike, plane or your backpack and start making your own "blue lines" on the map. Just record a video, upload it to Google, and they will extract individual pictures and make them part of Street View. Done it myself. Lots of fun. :O)
