First of all, the silvery hair and eyeshadow coordination? S-tier. Secondly, the topic of virality has been fascinating me lately with the rise of TikTok. "Going viral" is no longer a challenge but an expectation of people consistently using TikTok. Oh, your video has a million views? Well so do 500,000 other people's. This is what I’m concerned about. As a strategist, I wonder how creators will make money from these platforms long term. I think it’s only a matter of time until people realise they’re basically watching garbage being disguised as content. Especially as there is always a sponsor behind it. Clearly the video is being made for the sponsorship. How long until folks realise these people are just running around buying clothes everyday & you’re just mindlessly watching fantastical, none reality based content & have no life of your own.

For me, the more off-putting capitalism becomes, the more I disliked seeing hauls and the best new thing, and general overconsumption of things. I love makeup and skincare as much as any girl, but I'm well- aware of how unsustainable the whole lifestyle can be. I used to watch beauty channels almost religiously, buying every new eyeshadow palette that came out. But one day I looked over my collection and realized I owned more than ten people could use in a lifetime, and knew I was out of control. I'm embarrassed that it reached that point for me.

This. I try to be open minded about the “soft life” because I think the intent is good. But it’s hard for people to be “soft” when you work a job that’s physically demanding and you’re required to get “down and dirty”. It’s kind of a slap in the face tbh. And people are quick to say if you’re unhappy with your job just move on. But they forget that if someone isn’t doing those low jobs then they can’t enjoy the luxuries they experience. I’m glad you brought this up because I feel like nobody talks about this enough.

@@jlovescxndy I couldn’t agree more. The soft life approach is geared towards those who have a substantial income to support such a way of life. It cannot be applied universally as it would not benefit others. It’s attainable in some situations but shouldn’t be a goal to strive towards for all folks. The influencers have brand deals, sponsorships etc. The rest of us do the nitty gritty or the dirt jobs. I work in healthcare so such a way of life wouldn’t benefit me. Now im Married with a 2 year old, make up aint it for me. Great comment cause i was going to say similar. People get older and folks aren't going to be interested in seeing the same person doing the same content for years on end. It gets old as does the social media person and their audience. And with age for most people their minds just shift to other priorities. Some will simply "grow out" of social media because it really is a kid/young adult dominant platform.

One reason I learned to stay away from Beauty-Tube was because of the materialism. Yes those ladies that make $10k a month can splurge, but us regular girls can't do that. If it wasn't new wigs, hair products, tools, makeup etc I was being overwhelmed. I also don't want to watch that. It was entertaining here or there, but got to become a waste of time. I did notice partway through the worst of the Pandemic that there was an obvious shift towards Skin Care and Fragrance in Stores like Sephora and Ulta. I have found myself losing interest in buying Makeup (which is good because I have enough already, lol) and have become interested again in Fragrances. I was really into them 40 Years ago and it was really nice to dive into them again, because there is so much to choose from nowadays - especially the Middle Eastern Fragrances. I am only subscribed to 2 makeup artists- Lisa Eldridge and Wayne Goss. Both of them are financially loaded and they have their own brands.I am on temporary disability and they pay me peanuts so no way I can use the expensive products they use for their tutorials. But anyway I watch them because I can learn something and then do it on my face with my cheap make up, for example I have extremely hooded eyes and Wayne showed great technique how to do eyeshadow. And I really like him as a person. I also like Lisa‘s personality, she is celebrity make-up artist but she is very down-to-earth, friendly, and her voice is so soothing. and the both of them don’t do product endorsement and they don’t have any sponsorships.I ditched the other ones self called beauty gurus and unsubscribed. Now about your video- I rarely watch ads on someone’s video but I didn’t skip this time when you were talking passionately about these perfumes. One reason was that it is a great offer from the company you talk about (Shame that I live in Poland and I understood they ship only to Canada regarding countries outside US), I would definitely try it.The second reason is that you sounded really excited about this perfumes and you are a great example how to do the sponsorship ad during the video. I like long form content, I still like to know what’s out there and how other people use it. But that’s because I truly like beauty, and I prefer it without the drama. It’s been quiet around here and I actually appreciate it! 😅 I didn’t notice much the absence of the big gurus just because I never watched lots of their content. I dabbled here and there, but got tired of their self entitlement and the bubbles they lived in. The Tik Tok way, with the sexy/disgusted poses, quick changes, lip syncing in full makeup with 40 filters for 15 seconds with the same music…. That does nothing for me. Good for them, power and freebies for them, but it just adds nothing for me as a viewer… it’s just personal taste, I guess, I’m not for the cult of the ego. Especially someone else’s 😂 (again, why I didn’t miss the big rich vain gurus) But I get that it pays better over there, and KZread changes its algorithms so often it’s profoundly frustrating. Now you can’t even get away with 1 video a week, you need 3 or 5 to get some slight traction. It’s a full time job *before* it pays anything. Ridiculous. Regarding the business: the expectation that something will grow forever is stupid, but people still buy into it. That’s capitalism for you. If a big tootoober’s audience stabilises (or declines after a scandal that brought them “stray” subscribers temporarily), they just feel they’re stagnating and they’re not valid anymore. Which is dumb. But it’s the market and mindset and whatever. So they keep trying to make things spicy and new and step into other platforms that wiggle the shinier carrot. I just don’t get how quickly they can spit out that many videos. I tried to do Reels a couple of times and it took me as much time editing and refilling as making a 20 minute video for KZread 😅 I’m old…

Love this video!! Thank you Ti, and as always here for the realness. 🙏🏼🙌🏼 This video prompted me to think about it a bit and I wonder if any of the following resonates with others: • losing interest gradually (even before the plague started) because some of the people I was watching were pivoting towards "my fertility/pregnancy journey" videos and that content does not interest me • this would then lead to "my postpartum journey", "my baby's first months" etc videos, which is not a problem but I won't be watching those because it has zero relevance for me • creators diversifying so much that I don't even know what their focus is (other than hungry moneygrabs): shilling their own line of sunglasses, boring a** merch, NFTs, cooking tutorials, Twitch streaming games, podcasts, skincare reviews, anime reviews, candle reviews, home renovations etc all in one week. I mean ffs just put it all in one vlog and stop pretending you're an expert, but it very much has become the "everything all of the time" way of content. As you -and others - have said, the industry, the platform, and to some degree the plague, have ensured that the heyday of the big beauty creators was going to go downhill rapidly. It became so saturated (heh, heh) with everyone trying to make that kind of money that it was suffocating and very quickly it became boring. To this day I will still watch beauty videos (often from smaller channels) because they make interesting looks and enjoy what they're doing.

Now, don't get me wrong, I'm still wearing all the makeups (shout out to Alicia! ). But I don't consume nearly as much content on it. I still go in waves, but I share much more screen time with gardening, cooking and comedy videos. EJ speaks is my spirit animal 😂.

Same here! I still really love makeup, and I'm still very inspired by it (it really is an art form). But, I don't feel drawn to makeup _content_ too much any more, except for when I really love the creator (Alicia, KBJ, etc.), and I certainly felt more fulfilled in my own content when I started talking about things outside of hair/beauty.

Jackie Aina said eff yall. All her content now is her cleaning her mansion or wearing outfits on IG. Makeupshayla jumped ship too and all she does is outfits on IG too. Didn't have to unsubscribe from them on KZread because they unsubscribed themselves. I don't have TikTok either, so don't feel bad. Glad you're still here on YT!

Great analysis! I like when you talk from your "behind the scenes" perspective. I like tiktok algorithm (it's more nuanced and customizable, not shoving the same thing to 100% users like YT) but I still watch YT because I can't get enough info from a teenager talking for 15 seconds. I returned to makeup, and I like YT creators who upload 10-20 min videos instead of literal hours of nothingness from the past (Too Much Mouth is the best for me and the most consistent). It's just apples and oranges. I like that we are not suffocated by viral Tati videos and the likes of her on YT anymore 😂

This explains a lot why I haven't seen makeup tutorials in a long time. Also it's messed up that KZread punishes you for not playing their numbers game. Also I'm so out of the loop, what was the beauty vloggers dramageddon? The hell did I miss?

Very entertaining! Listening to this as I rearrange my bookshelf. Couldn't figure out if you were saying booty or beauty but how they're both interchangeable at this point which made the content even funnier. And yes I know people who are trying to slowly get on KZread and they have no idea what they are in for so this was also helpful.

I honestly can say that the main reason I, MYSELF, don't watch "beauty gurus" or "influencers" anymore is because I'm pretty much a fast learner so once I see something that I wanna learn to do, after watching a few times, I've gotten it & then I'm able to master it myself 🤷🏽‍♀️. Therefore, I no longer have the need to keep watching them. It's only so many ways to make a lace wig look "natural", how to do acrylic nails, how to do a flawless makeup look & how to color a wig. So I don't need to watch every creator that does those things over & over again. I don't need every other influencer telling me where to shop to find the best "wig" because most of the time their lying or most people can't afford them. So, these are MY reasons for not watching these people anymore and I KNOW I'm not alone 🤷🏽‍♀️👊🏽😔💅

Being a beauty guru kinda just meant hoarding a bunch of makeup you don’t use. I think Hannah from SmokeyGlow did a video talking about how wasteful that era was and how we fell into it. I still don’t use any of the eyeshadow I own. Lmao. I’ve had the same Jaclyn hill palette for years.

Totally feel this. I think I stopped the makeup channels around 2019 so I didn’t really notice and I’m not on tik Tok yet. But I did notice a HUGE spike in fragrance creators during the pandemic and vlog/lifestyle content. I’m kinda bored with it all now. I watch but very sparingly. Not like before. I’ve also unsubscribed to many. Especially since everyone’s collection of things looks exactly the same. I still enjoy travel content.

Heeeyyyy!!! I came very late onto the beauty scene. After doing a few makeup tutorials, I learned quickly that I have nothing at the moment to show that hasn't already been seen. When I think of anything new or I stumble upon a hack or when MK comes out with a new product, I'll share my thoughts and tips. I thought it would be fun to play around with makeup and share it on my beauty channel but I discovered that it is definitely way more work then I care to do. I'm so glad I found your video because I was feeling the pressure to perform and record another eyeshadow tutorial😢 but nope...I ain't gonna do it!!! 😏 Fortunately, I've found my flow in something that is more meaningful to me. So... I'm gonna stick with that and continue to evolve in different areas in beauty. And you're right about the fragrances. My fragrance review videos are amongst my top viewed videos. Thank you so much for speaking on this topic! ❤️🤗😘

thank u for speaking on the working class and how youtube is essentially classist, to summarise what you were saying, i have thought about making youtube videos over the years but im not rich by any means and live quite a blessed but humble life cause well im poor. so i already know people likely wouldn't be interested which sucks. and this goes for all youtube! art channels as well for example

Good to see you, Ti! Congrats on the ScentBird sponsership. Love the eyeshadow look and your skin is 💰. I didn't know that the makeup gurus had left youtube but I haven't watched them in quite a while. Hell, I'm still masking over here and frankly I've become very accepting of rocking my makeup-free face out in public;Tin Man highlighter be damned. 🤣 I was in TJ Maxx over the weekend and saw Mac lipsticks and Morphe make up. So the mighty Mac sure ain't what they use to be. I do feel hear more about fragrance than I used to, but a lot of 9 - 5 jobs sort of frown on scents in the office. If you work from home of course you can do what you want. I am enjoying Fashion Guru's right now but that doesn't mean I'm running out to buy a pair of $500 shorts - and yes a $500 pair of shorts are a thing.
