I think that’s probably because there’s no official (filmed) recording of the Off-Broadway production, but there is a proshot of the West End production

I agree with you! Love Yo girl, always hits me hard with "now you're truly a Heather".

Veronica was still empowered in Blue though. In fact, she was confident as she managed to get away from Kurt and Ram. It also really hits on how doggish popular high school guys can be. Which is one of the flaws of high school society that JD is on about. Blue really should’ve stayed in this version.

I agree. Unfortunately, SA is still a prevalent issue and "Blue" does a great job of explaining that alcohol ≠ consent. I feel like in "You're Welcome" they're not as drunk and silly they're just looking for a good time. Both songs depict SA in the same way only in the latter Veronica is able to fight off their advances.

Exactly. The writers tried way too hard to make the musical "cleaner" even though it was a dark comedy in the first place. All the song replacements and the lyric changes removes the charm. Also, she was supposed to "lose" in Blue so she could get revenge later in "Our Love is God." It doesn't make sense if she already won

⁠@@andrewbrasfield1104Which is why in versions with “You’re Welcome” we also get the moment in “Never Shut Up Again” with Kurt and Ram bragging that they had in fact slept with Veronica(which they didn’t), with her powerless to stop the lies and slut-shaming. They ruined her reputation as their revenge for her fighting off their unwanted advances. The bullying from that song leads directly into “Our Love is God.”

I also think that blue's ending and sword fight subtly imply that duke is the one who started the rumor when ram and Kurt woke up from blacking out. And you're not gonna sit here and tell me that "You're welcome" and "never shut up again" are better than blue and sword fight comedically or otherwise. If anything they're overly censored and cringe. Kinda like every other change that came from the HS version.

"Lifeboat" is so heart-wrenching. "Freeze Your Brain" is so relatable. "Candy Store" and "Dead Girl Walking" are such earworms.

I honestly prefer the off broadway version even tho I saw the west end version in April, it’s just that the west end is better irl than listening to the sound track

I love that they added "I Say No", when Veronica dumps JD in the most epic way possible, stating that while she sympathises with his horrible childhood, it doesn't justify killing people, no matter how awful they were in life.

Amazing. You just solidified my primary reason why being an assassin is the last thing I’d take up in a fantasy world, even if it was for a good cause. Even if I did accept the job, I’d plan out every way things could go south. Upon entering my target’s palace, I’d turn myself over to the king, saying that while I’d been sent to kill him, it’s something my morals prevent me from doing. He can even execute me. Anything to get me out of the assassin business would be suitable.

I'm glad too - the version I saw yesterday did really well with that. It's actually one of the bravest things Veronica does in the whole musical. She knew what JD was capable of, but she was brave enough to tell him something she knew he wouldn't want to hear.

Blue is better than you’re welcome in my opinion. Blue takes away Veronica’s power in a scene where her power is taken away. This is also realistic in real life potential SA. However, you’re welcome takes away all the tense atmosphere where you wonder if she’s actually in danger. It’s very toned down, and Veronicas verses make it so you don’t worry for her safety nearly as much.

Let's not forget how a funeral for Kurt and Ram turned into their dads saying "This is fine and good and SO inspiring" and then proclaiming that they like each other, too. (Wait. Aren't they both married?) Making it seem like two supposedly-gay boys killing themselves is a GOOD thing is honestly trivializing the whole thing and the grief absolutely vanished in the course of the song, because it was "better". JD even took that and ran with it as fuel for why what they did was GOOD, when it in fact was horrible and lies. Plus the whole thing with the teacher and her...enthusiasm about someone ending themselves and leaving a "lovely note". Yikes. "Blue" was actually horrifying to listen to and I have felt nervous about if she was going to get out of there every single time I have listened to it, while "You're Welcome" didn't feel as tense, as...dangerous. Especially with Veronica's only lines, once the song starts, being acts of desperation like "Open the door, Heather!" and "Look, booze, drink!" while they're singing about how she needs to take responsibility for their blue balls in "Blue" and sleep with them, while in "You're Welcome" Veronica gets whole verses of her talking about what she's going to do to get out of this desperate situation, so there's no frantic reaching for the bottle or banging on the car door like what an actual person trying to avoid being assaulted would do. People in real life don't navigate tense and dangerous situations like a Death Note character, they panic. I don't LIKE "Blue", not because it's a stupid song, but because it perfectly encapsulated the terror of the situation in a horrifyingly catchy way that makes you fear for the protagonist. It's like if Ram suddenly got a whole verse talking about how terrified he is about JD while running from him in "Our Love is God" instead of him screaming that he didn't understand why JD was trying to kill him and insulting him interspersed with the other stuff. Frankly, I think "You're Welcome" is much less realistic and trivializing for the situation.

I've always thought blue is underrated, it's such a fun song. I don't think you can mark it down for being offensive considering Martha is the only unproblematic character

Ryan actually talked about this on his one video with his girlfriend Sam. It's SUPPOSED to be problematic. That's the point. It's supposed to make us hate Kurt and Ram so much that we WANT JD to kill them. Also yes I love that they gave Veronica more power but in actual situations like this she most likely would be that powerless. She still manages to get away but there's more struggle. It shows just how cruel people can be and how defensive others can be especially when drunk. The whole musical is problematic even Martha's scene could be seen as such as it's right before her suicide attempt. The whole musical isn't for the faint of heart. Yes I'd love for everyone to love my favourite musical but Heathers isn't for everyone and that's just the facts.

My number 1 is meant to be yours because I love how JD snaps completely and in the background Veronica finally understand that JD need to be stop and she takes it upon herself

i love how i say no was written with Carrie Hope Fletcher in mind. pretty sure she said she had about a week to learn it before it went into the show. i just need some appreciation for the queen herself.

i thing blue is underrated, i put it above shine a light personally. yes, its offensive, its problematic. thats the point. its not supposed to be a song against sa, but a song showcasing that these two drunk high school kids arent understanding that no is no. it comes across as uncomfortable, embarrassing, and creepy exactly the way it was meant to and i love it

honestly i think that blue is really important for the story line of the musical cause it sets veronica and jd's actions of kurt and ram's murders into action. but dead girl walking (reprise), lifeboat, meant to be mine, candy story, beautiful, and seventeen are definitely my favorites.

I never understood why they took Blue off the setlist like, yes it is problematic but the whole show is. Its a dark comedy they literally mock gays, suicide, eating disorders but they draw the line at sexual assault? Like they are all awful things but going by those standards the entire musical should be scratched. Idk

But, I listened to the new Heather Duke song and it included the stuff about what allegedly happened in the graveyard to the tune of "Big Fun", so JD still has his motivation for killing them. Considering the original soundtrack didn't have the "Blue" reprise, it being something you only saw if you watching the performance, this might actually be better. Plus, the "Big Fun" callback was...fun. Anyways, what matters is that JD still has his motivation, so we're good.

Dead girl walking original and reprise will be my favourites forever! Also "You're Welcome" and "Never shut up again" are soo underrated. (Im so glad to see that Heather D has her own song)

"I Say No" actually got me turned onto the whole Heathers musical. It's an amazing power ballad, for anyone that's been in an abusive relationship. Great lyrics and really uplifting, empowering.

Everyone does has different opinions on everything like the biggest opinion debate the pineapple on pizza one. Some people some no to pineapple on pizza and by the way I'm one of the ones that say no to pineapple on pizza. While some say yes to pineapple on pizza. I think the pineapple one is one of the most debated opinions put there.

I hate You’re Welcome. I’m a rape victim, and thought Blue was fine and when I saw the show I almost had to leave during You’re Welcome from being triggered. Most of the people who had a problem with Blue were not victims of it, and spoke over people like me telling me how I should feel about it.

I feel the same way and do people seem to forget that the original movie is a dark comedy? While "Blue" is a bit goofy and lazy it fits the tone of the musical. "You're Welcome" is an okay track but the rap style didn't fit the musical at all. Also, I find it a bit annoying and somewhat more alarming.

I LOVE this musical!! In my opinion all the songs are fantastic in their own way. Candy Store is my favorite by far.

I'm so glad "I Say No" was in the top 5. Although I do like the off-broadway version, the west end recording takes the top slot for me and a large part of it is "I Say No" nothing like a power ballad to show that Veronica is through with JD.

i think the idea of people getting upset by Blue is understandable (as someone who’s been a victim of SA), but the fact that they don’t see a problem with Our Love is God or Meant To Be Yours is kinda annoying. the whole point of Blue is to show how gross Kurt and Ram are but also to make it tricky when JD kills them- yes they’re bad people but do they really deserve death?

I can’t pick my fav I love all of the songs

I hold such a special spot in my heart for kindergarten boyfriend, I was a little sad when it got ranked so low cause it also at always makes me cry, yes I know it’s not the most impressing song in the soundtrack, but it holds such a strong and sad message. Like just watching such a sweet character being constantly downgraded and treated like shit was so sad to see, mainly because this is a very true situation that unfortunately happens quite a lot irl.

For me at least “I am Damaged” is my favorite, it’s really short but honestly I love it sm

I think Blue as a song is more powerful than it’s replacement, because it’s impact in the story builds a darker and more impactful arc. Blue is a song that is used to reflect reality and makes us sympathize with Veronica

So... Before I even knew what this musical was about, I saw a clip of Seventeen (sung by Jamie and Carrie) and I instantly fell in love with the song. Long story short I watched the musical because of it, which is what got me into musical theatre. So for this reason Seventeen is always gonna be number 1 for me, but I say no is a really close second, and also I LOVE Meant to be yours, Dead girl walking and the repreases of DDW and Seventeen

“Kindergarten Boyfriend” deserved so much more love!! The reason why none of Martha’s words rhymed because she was reading her own Suicide note! I’m Off Broadway she cross her arms and falls into the “pool” where Veronica threw the pig piñata in “Big Fun” to end her life so she could “Fit in” with the popular kids. (Chandler, Ram, Kurt)

Interesting comments on the Blue vs You're Welcome conversation When I saw the revival in London, I hated You're Welcome, and am still not a huge fan of it. I get what it was trying to be, and as mentioned it gives Veronica much more power. But it feels so much more sinister and threatening to me, like there is very real danger Why I always liked Blue on the original soundtrack, is that is made Kurt and Ram feel incompetent. While the messaging was creepy, it gave me much more of a vibe that actually they're clowns, and Veronica will be fine So though I see the intent of the change, I've personally never liked the more legitimately threatening tone of You're Welcome and I always felt like it missed what they were going for

honestly i think that the difference between "you're welcome" and "blue" is what's going on in veronicas head vs to everyone else. when you're in that situation, it's absolutely *terrifying* and actually portrayed the danger that's she's in, even if it's exaggerated a bit. meanwhile in blue it shows what's happening to everyone else, it feels much more threatening to her than it seemed. at least that's just my pov. i love both, but i just like "you're welcome" more

Fun fact: September 1, 1989 was actually on a Friday. It would have made a lot more sense to start on September 4th, the first Monday of the month. As a note, I find JD's character very persuasive. I think it's something to do with the way he totally believes everything he's saying.

So...what is the context of Veronica crying so much that JD decides to KILL Kurt and Ram if they removed Blue and its reprise, which JD witnessed, and what spurred on his rage and bloodlust against them? Up until that moment, he just thought they were annoying jocks. It was seeing them loudly proclaiming to the entire school that they had a three-way or even a whole orgy with Veronica in the graveyard that made her start sobbing and caused him to comfort her and plot their deaths. So, can someone that has seen the other version tell me WHY JD decided to kill them following, apparently, Heather Duke's "I'm in charge now" song? I mean, Heather Chandler was a bad joke gone wrong, but Kurt and Ram were targeted.

Blue is a song used only for comic relief, because after Chandler's death, even the funniest scenes took a toll on the mood. Also, Kurt and Ram needed more screen time to die afterwards (and they needed a reason to kill them too). I don't think Veronica was disempowered, the focus just wasn't on her.

We’re just performing this in Christchurch New Zealand this week. It’s a marvellous musical, such great songs

I love blue, my favourite song in the soundtrack idc what y’all say, you aren’t changing my mind.

This cast is amazing. Teleri Hughes is hands down the best Heather Mac I’ve ever seen, and I’ve seen roughly a dozen iterations, and that’s before we even get into the nuanced portrayal of Veronica, Chandler, and the duo of Kurt and Ram. This casting was phenomenal practically down to every single cast member.

I love blue, melody wise, even though the meaning is horrible the song is really good and one of my personal favourites

Don’t get me wrong the 2022 version was good but it didn’t have the same everything as the Off-Broadway 2014 version. A lot of Veronica’s lines felt forced, like the laughter. But Barrett’s version was so casual and felt more real. Of course I can see Blue making a lot of people uncomfortable but nobody can beat Off-Broadway version.

I didn't learn until now about Never Shut Up Again, but I think it's definitely a great addition. It always struck me as strange that Chandler and McNamara got their own songs, but all Duke got was the 40 second reprise of Shine a Light. It definitely feels appropriate, and it also highlights a major character change, so it works well narratively.

Personally, I'd put Meant to be Yours in number 1, because- God, it represents all the musical: a passionate song that combines dark topics and humanity; an unstable rythma and character, and all the context needed to explote in this song is simply amazing. Maybe it's not here, but Meant to be yours is number 1 in my heart... both versions: Ryan and Jamie's because they're something else. Then, I'd put Seventeen and Candy store, those are my top 3

I personally love both the off broadway and the west end. Both have good parts, Off broad way has the iconic Girl who plays Veronica (Cant remember her name sorry) and west end has never shut up again which is just- *chefs kiss* and Jamie muscato and Carrie Hope Fletcher (West End Og cast not the ones in the recording on screen! Though this cast is very good in person) so yeah VERY GOOD!!! The songs are all amazing and I love both of them so much! Also the west end is so so much better in person! Trust me.

May be an unpopular opinion, I think blue is better than you’re welcome, blue puts humour to it while you’re welcome is from the victim’s perspective and it feels a lot more traumatic and dark, idk I might have worded it wrong, it’s currently 1am 😂

No joke, I love the movie and I love the musical adaptation. I just wish I could see the latter live. Or maybe as a Netflix movie adaptation.

HOW IS NEVER SHUT UP AGAIN AT 16?! this song is so powerful. If you think about it, Heather Duke finally breaking through and feeling confident with herself is so cool to me. Plus it looks really fun to sing.

My favorite songs are tied between The me inside of me, I say no and Never shut up again, but I seriously love this musical and all the songs

If you just listen to it and not think about it all too much, Blue is really enjoyable. Like, yes, you just need common sense to make sure you remember it's bad, but it's a good song.

I recently played heather chandler and a lot of people assume that my favorite song is candy store or yo girl but I've heard them so much im so sick of them honestly my favorite is meant to be yours

This list also clearly underrates my dead gay son everyone talks about how this is a huge part about moving the story and JD’s point as well and is one of the happier numbers.
