All the faults on this box fresh Canyon Endurace CF SLX with full Dura Ace!

Спорт

Fresh from the box this customer had concerns their new Canyon Endurace CF SLX was not quite right. They were right.
Visible faults include:
Rear Brake not Bleed, oil residue on rear caliper
Rear Caliper missing bolt spacer, retaining pin not fitted correctly
Rear caliper misaligned.
Cranks have play left and right despite preload ring being wound in. (Missing Spacer)
Rear wheel wobbles, most likely the incorrect axle supplied.
Brake hoses rub frame and vibrate off handlebars
Chain rubs front mech in highest and lowest gears.
We have not gone any further than a visual inspection. There are enough faults here to ask Canyon for authorisation to put right before we go ahead.

that's why I build all the bike by myself. First a quick visit to the bike shop to face and chase the needed bits and then building up. It takes me much longer than a professional mechanic, but I put so much care into it that nobody else would ever do unless it's their bike. Thanks for exposing this. I had a canyon 4 years ago and it was flawless. But apparently such issues are happening more and more often. There is probably just too much pressure on the people doing the assembly of those bikes. After you have don 100 of them you almost don't think anymore at what you are doing and that's where the mistakes start to happen. It's understandable, but not justifiable given the amount of money you pay for such bikes.

@@ltu42 I like technical stuff and I have two books on bike repairs. Plus I’m an engineer so it also helps a bit. And I’ve watched loads of KZread videos and gone through many forums. Lots of incorrect information but you always learn something. And if you look on the manuals of the manufactures you very often find the info you need. You just need to know where to look. At my first brake bleed I was quite worried of messing it up. But you learn. Take an old bike. Disassemble it completely snd mount it again. Then you understand how everything works. And the good thing is; once you know how everything works together, it’s much easier to troubleshoot whatever problem you might have. You also need to enjoy it though. I have purchased two Canyons. One came flawless, one need quite a bit of work to be rideable. Canyon responded quickly telling to me to take to my local bike store, have it sorted and they will reimburse me. it only took a day or so to sort which included replacing a cable and derailleur hanger and some fine tuning. Once I scanned and emailed the bill to Canyon, they reimbursed me electronically the same day. While it was disappointing at the outset, the way Canyon stood behind the product and responded quickly was encouraging. I ride both bikes regularly and have had zero issues. I was the wrong side of some big hills in Wales, and had some pretty hairy downhills to contend with, on 1 brake. Canyon were v apologetic, a v quickly authorised my LBC to remedy failings. They sent me a nice Canyon jersey too. It was a bit of a fadge, but I got a good result from them.

Great video. These embarrassing flaws need to be called out- especially now that 'entry-level' bikes are $3k. I got a high end enduro a few months ago and was shocked that the centerlock lock rings for the brake rotors were loose. Then my lbs (whom I didn't buy it from) gaslighted me into believing it was normal to have a little bit of play. Imagine having loose rotors on a 150mm enduro! In another situation I had to buy a new carbon wheel for my gravel bike from the same lbs- when I asked them if they'd used a torque wrench on the rotor centerlock they actually boasted that they tighten them by feel. I immediately re-torqued every bolt on the bike. I assembled dozens of mid to high end bikes as a mechanic/salesman at a bike shop about 15 years ago. I don't recall any of these out of the box flaws and sloppiness. And that was when a top of the line bike was $5k.

What annoys me the most, bike manufacturers transfer the hassle right to the shop and us mechanics, knowing about the issues. I work in a Cube store in Germoney 🇩🇪 and about every second bike has problems with: Flat mount tabs not square, overfilled brakes, poor assembly in general. Btw: Cube explained those problems with new personal at the production line which isn't trained enough.... My College who does the Endcontrol after our apprentices build the bikes (a topic of it's own) has one of the worst jobs since you know when.....excuses in my opinion for still maximising the monetary outcome for investors. Heaven's sake I "only" have to repair and service already used bikes and, of course, the special cases. And yes, I still love to be a mechanic 💚 Keep on rolling and awsome channel 👍

This type of stuff is exactly why I built my own bike from the ground up (the only thing I didn't do myself was lace the wheels, that's just dark hocus pocus to me). However, I'd not recommend the DIY approach to everyone. That said, if you have a basic understanding of Newtonian physics, a healthy thirst for Park Tool videos and the knowledge contained in Shimano service manuals (please do go Shimano, their documentation is above and beyond), lots of patience, and are firm believer of the fact that the end result will always reflect the quality of the tools you invest in (seriously, it's fine to cheap out with Chinese components once you become a more advanced mechanic but you should *NEVER* cheap out on tools), then you'll find that building your own bike is quite a cathartic experience. Moreover, in the sort of upper level bike range (where predatory companies like Specialized and Cervelo make their biggest margins) you could save a pretty penny and get your bike months before you could have a new one delivered from the shop. That said, you might still want to support your LBS and so you could even enlist their help and have them build it for you in exchange for labor cost (although not all of them are willing to do that because a lot of people inevitably supply them with the wrong parts).

Can you order this configuration from Canyon direct in the UK? As for the axle, I know it's called a thru axle, but it's not technically an axle, its purpose is to secure the hub between the dropouts via compression. Everything from Lamborghinis and Ducatis to Toyotas is made that way and a bicycle (despite the prices they manage to charge) is a significantly simpler object to produce than a Lamborghini. The problem is the application of QA which needs to be done at key stages along the delivery pipeline with the ability to either stop the line in a severe case (maybe spotting that every carbon frame is completely out of shape and they need to stop production of more frames for the bin?) or pull things from the line to fix and root cause if it's simple torque issues (mechanics torque wrench is out of calibration?) or bolts done the wrong way (mechanic education time?). If you had a single mechanic doing the whole bike, you'd have constant, large variations in quality in the same batch and the cost of QA would also be massive as you wouldn't be able to use any type of sampling methods as part of the quality controls, every component on every bike would need to be tested and you'd still have large variations.

  • @cameronmclennan1664

    @cameronmclennan1664

That’s quite interesting. Production line has proven to be very effective over time. One of the big differences however is for a motor vehicle, they design the vehicle to be assembled on the production line. There is significant effort put into self locating screws, bolts, removing degrees of freedom when assembling items etc. That is how they use their house of quality to improve again and again, reduce assembly time whilst improving quality. For a bike …….. we’re just using the same stuff that I dare say hasn’t been optimised for assembly line production. If they make an error they need to be able to call it out, or found via QC without heavy handed repercussion (not suggesting this occurs). It’s all about quality improvement. Maybe this is just a process in time and they will work to improving as time moves on. Very competitively priced bikes though.

I have had a Canyon Exceed CF SL 7.0 for 4 years and it is excellent. I have replaced worn parts, as you would expect, and it is still a pleasure to ride. I bought it directly from Canyon at a competitive price. However, I have seen their bikes get more expensive over the years as their presence in the cycling world grows. I suspect their expansion has resulted in a dilution of expertise in some areas and more of a focus on profits over attention to detail. I don’t think I can afford to get the same bike at a similar price (relatively speaking) from Canyon now. Also, given an increase in quality concerns I have come across recently, not sure I would risk it now. Such a shame.

My friend just took delivery of his Speedmax CFR yesterday. As soon as he installed the wheels and checked the brakes, the fork wiggled and was loose. We were able to loosen the entire front end up, and re-snug up the headset cap and stem. (Not the easiest job on a TT bike!) Think you're wrong about the axle. The hub bearings never ride on a through axle, it just is there to clamp the assembly together. The hub has its own axle that is hard press fit in the bearings. Probably the dt axle is one length too long, so the inboard end of threaded length is bottoming on the hanger thread and is not providing any clamping. My local shop would refuse to work on people bringing in fresh Canyons!

  • @Mapdec

I think you’re right. I had a bit more time with it. I could loosen the mech hanger and get a better alignment with the threads on the hanger and the hole in the frame. The axle would tighten about another turn. Bonkers that so much play in hanger interface. Anyway, it still wasn’t perfect. Most of the wobble had gone but there was a ‘click’ of movement still. I didn’t investigate further as customer had decided to send it back.
