    De stam is actually very similar in English - the stem of the verb is the root of the verb! By the way, the verb to will also means to want in English, tho it is also used a lot instead of shall (shall = zullen) nowadays to form the future tense, but its true / original meaning as an actual verb is to want / to will to do something, which is also used a lot in sentences such as ‘not willing to do that’ and ‘not willing to go’ and ‘will ye, nill ye’ etc as a verb, and in the phrase ‘against my will’ it is used as a noun, because in English every verb can also be a noun, and also an adjective if it’s the past participle, just like in Dutch - there are two verbs in Old English, willen & nillen, which mean (to) will / want and (to) not want, and the verbs to will & to nill directly came from those two, but in English the word want (which means for / because in Dutch) was actually used as a verb, and nowadays it is used as the main verb that means to will / willen something, however, the verb to will is still used with its original meaning, same as shall, especially in England and in rural areas in the US, and also in lots of movies / stories / poetry / lyrics / plays as well as in books / writings / textbooks etc, so luckily these verbs haven’t completely fallen out of use, tho to will is not used as much as the verb to want and shall is not used as much as will as an auxiliary verb to form the future tense! English & Dutch are so similar in many ways - the word order can be quite different, but in general, Dutch is very close to English, so it’s super easy to learn!

    It's crazy how much it helps to learn a second and third language. I speak Spanish and English, and not very long ago I started learning German for curiosity and I just thought it as a quite useful language to learn (second most native speakers in Europe, first one is Russian), similarity to Dutch and other germanic languages, etc. At first, German grammar sounded quite strange to me, like putting verbs at the end. Now, learning Dutch grammar I am just like: yeah, of course, everything makes perfect sense. It is not only very similar but even easier than German. I do not know why, but I feel like it makes more intuitive sense putting the conjugated verb first and then everything else, than the way it is done in German, where you put every verb at the end and then comes the conjugated verb.

    THIS THO. LOL The scene which you so expertly dramaticized at the beginning of this video is a scene that I have personally experienced so many times with Duolingo. Duolingo is an amazing resource for dabbling in learning some basic vocabulary and grammar via context and example, but the lack of explanation or instruction can be incredibly frustrating. That's why I really really appreciate people like you, Jason Bond, and others who take the time to offer free, basic instruction on the internet. Combined with immersive materials, starting with children's books, you can go a lot farther than you can with Duolingo alone.

    Dutch is too pretty not to know, so one should never give up on trying to learn it, and I highly recommend learning it to a native speaker level, as the words are so gorgeous - Dutch / English / Norwegian are the easiest languages ever, so I learned Dutch to an advanced level fast, as I focused on it for about three or four months, tho I started learning languages on my own last year in October or November, but I am actually learning 15+ languages at the same time, and I know over 8.500 base words in Dutch at the moment, and I noticed that most of those words have already become part of my automatic Dutch mode, so I can instantly process / understand them in Dutch without having to translate them into English in my mind or think about the meaning, because I have seen those words so many times over a period of time, and I also noticed that the beginning always seems difficult and overwhelming in every new language, but it gets easier and easier as one learns more and more new words, and it gets super easy after one learns at least a few thousand words, and once one knows about 5.000 words in the new language, one starts picking up a lot of new words and phrases naturally as one sees them being used in context, so when I got to an upper intermediate level (about 5.000 words) I started watching a lot of videos with the Dutch sub on, and I focused on the Dutch sub, and I also started watching a lot of videos that have both the Dutch sub and the English sub hardcoded and where they speak faster, because I could understand most of the words and sentences at faster speed, and I always rewatch almost every video multiple times, over a period of time, and I noticed that I could understand almost every word (that was used in the videos that I watched) after rewatching the videos several times, and now I am advanced level, so I can understand over 99% of the words used in almost every video, and there are usually only 5 new words in each new video, sometimes only one new word, and in videos on topics such as science / medicine etc there are more new words, sometimes 10 to 30 new words, depending on the video, so I usually type those new words I come across in a Draft or in a comment or something, and I repeat them multiple times, every 3 days or so, until I can remember each word automatically!

    Old Norse is also one of the prettiest languages I’ve ever seen, it has real gorgeous words like erfiði / yfir / haf / vindr / dyn / skegg / dróttinn / veit / drengr / fjall / hǫnd / fisksins / lengr / hvassir / rauðr / hvarr / grænn / hvat / líkligr / hǫss / afi / frændi / heitir / veð / hráka / þó / kvern / mælti / hét / setja / hinn / kveða / sinn / leið / brott / knerri / við / dýr / með / heyra / eða etc, and the word endings (like nir and inn and sins etc) and the letter combinations are so pretty, just like the word endings and letter combinations in English and Dutch and Norwegian - I can’t stop learning new pretty words in Old Norse and Icelandic (and the other pretty languages) and they are really áddìctive to look at and read and hear in lyrics etc, I’ve been listening to Skáld songs in Old Norse and Icelandic since I found the first song in Old Norse (Troll Kalla Mik) and I’ve memorized most of those lyrics!

    Some of the prettiest Welsh words are derwen / nest / afon / talar / adeilad / helygen / afal / hyd / lolfa / enaid / bedwen / neithiwr / ynys / nos / sydd / noswaith / ers / mynd / rhosyn / eistedd / gwych / tân / fawr / telyn or delyn / ynddyn / llaw or dwylo / doeth / fewn or mewn / gwar / bys / ffynnon / swrn / tew / blin / mynydd / braich etc, and Welsh reminds of Dutch because they have a similar intonation / vibe and they both have the soft CH (H-like K-controlled) sound and many of the words have similar types of letter combinations - Welsh is a category 1 language, and Breton / Cornish are also category 1 languages, just like Dutch and English and Norwegian etc, so they are very easy to learn, and have mostly pretty words, and I am beginner level in Welsh and in the other 5 Celtic languages!

    Hello Duch learners! I've been learning Dutch for about a month now. Quite an enojoyable pastime! I am however quite confused regarding the pronunciation of words that end with "-en". Let's take this sentence for example: "honden lezen boeken". Both Duolinguo and Google translator drop the final N in each word. They pronunce this as if it was "honde leze boeke". On the other hand, when I listen to tutorials on youtube where human beings speak, they never drop the N, it's audible very well. I'm wondering what the correct pronunciation is. Could you help me figure this out once and for all? Dank je wel!

  • @learndutchwithkim

    @learndutchwithkim

    There is no “correct” form, but most Dutchies drop the N, also me in colloquial speech. Only here on KZread I speak more clearly, as do the other teachers I assume, and therefore we pronounce every letter more carefully ☺️

    I would like to add to the praises of Learn Dutch with Kim. I have been using Duolingo for a number of years now. I have been studying very diligently and have well over 2.1K days in a row. But I always seem to reach a point where my brain isn't processing what I am hearing. I can read it but it seems that I don't have a strong enough foundation in grammar. This has already started to happen to me with Dutch when Duolingo presented some conjunctions-without any real explanation. It was like I fell off of a cliff. Without a chance to ask questions, Duolingo is of limited use and the beginning of this video explains the problem very well. Duolingo is robotic, sort of AI and not really helpful once you move beyond the basics.

    Ik leer nu allen op duolingo, voor mij als iemand van duitsland is het nog een keer beter omdat onze taals veel samen hebben (wij hebben ook soms zoals de persoonsvorm), maar als je een engels moedersprakler bent heb je een probleem met duolingo. Ik leer sinns een maand met duolingo en kan al met moederspraklern op reddit schrijven en dat hier schrijven. Uw videos zijn nog een goede mogelijkheid een beetje meer te leren, maar een probleem heb ik met nederlands, ik kan al een text lezen en zie vaak snel wat het in duits heet, maar als ik "Everybody wants to be able to speak dutch" heb vertalen moeten, wolt ik "iedereen wil nederlands spreken kunnen" zeggen omdat mijn brein nog duits denkt. Ik weet niet hoeveel in mijn text fout is, omdat het niet moelijk was😅

    ❓️Ik heb een vraag over zinnen met twee werkwoorden bijvoorbeeld: Hij gaat naar zijn werk lopen of De man gaat naar Amsterdam fietsen. Ik vraag me af of het een grote vergissing zou zijn om een tweede werkwoord voor het woord NAAR te zetten. Ik heb gehoord dat in het geval van langere zinnen het tweede werkwoord vóór het voorzetsel kan staan, en niet noodzakelijkerwijs aan het einde van de zin. Klopt dit? 🤔 Ik zal dankbaar zijn voor hulp! 😊 Trouwens, je video's zijn geweldig! Je doet geweldig werk! 👏
