Eagle eyed viewers on the Booth Junkie Discord noted that it looks like the Skylight is extremely similar to the Alctron CK6, and looking at the specs on the Alctron site it looks like its the same mic. (www.alctron-audio.com/Alctron/Microphones/FET-Condenser/CK6.html)

I already bought my mic, a cheap usb Neewer7000 for under 50$ cdn. So.. I don't have anything to buy anymore, very happy with my cheap stuff. But... I still listen to Booth Junkie for the soothing voice and such a positive attitude. You can talk about federal tax and it will still be music to my ears. Thank you for sharing your super power with us. Love from Montréal

I appreciate the honesty throughout the review for each of these items! Super honest and I LOVE how you mention alternatives. As an example in the 512 boom arm discussion you point out something identical to it that has more features, ie the H&A Boom Arm. In the Limelight vs H&A AC50, you effectively show they're the same microphone. And literally a recolor. Honestly to me - they sounded damn identical. It's not -just- the same build, lettering, grooves, it's the same sound too :D And in your Stellar X2 vs Skylight video, it really shows how much detail and clarity is lost on the Skylight. I also love your take of the 512 Academy Headphones and how other headphones at the pricepoint are a better buy.

Same sound? AC50 is more muddy and dark, Limelight sounds way better

Thanks for all the info you've put out mic. Trying to get better gear to get more serious and going off of older videos the E100-S seemed to be the best fit with their supercardioid pattern and my limited space but those things are around $400 as opposed to $250 as the older videos said (that's inflation and market, not a dig at you). What would you recommend in it's place with a top budget of $250?

I have discovered that the metal mesh isn't just for plosives and such. It's also to shield the capsule from EM radiation. It's a rather new thing, and I'm not entirely sure how well it works.

Hello, I have the NT1-A, and am thinking of streaming. Will the mic pick up keyboard strokes (Can't test as I still need a stand and find a way to connect it to the shock mount)?

Hi Mike! I'm new to your channel, and I have to say I love your work and what you do for the voiceover community. I'm here to stay! I'm wondering - have you ever done a video on warm-up routines? I'm relatively new to voice acting / narration / whatever you'd like to call it. I'm an amateur freelancer who is just starting to put a system together for myself. For the past two months now I've had a few consistent jobs, one of which requires me to record on a daily basis. I have noticed, over the course of about 70 scripts, that my voice has a tendency to change drastically day to day. Sometimes I'm bang on. Sometimes my voice is more baritone than usual. Sometimes there is an aggressive sibilance that I can't seem to wipe out. Sometimes I can't seem to shape vowels properly. And what is most frustrating about this is that I don't feel any different day to day, I don't DO anything differently. My voice is just a loose cannon, and I need to rein it in! Do you have a routine you follow to get yourself in shape each day? A specific diet, or a warm-up, some sort of exercise, a favorite kind of tea? I'd be extremely interested in this kind of insight. Thanks again for your amazing content!

I think this is the most comprehensive video that gives comparisons, noise floor tests, reality about most of the 512 stuff being rip-offs, the microphone i was looking at was the Skylight, but its middy and obviously an alcatron rip-off with a pretty high noise floor which to me is a huge bummer, Thankyou Mike! You saved me some cash! Actually a lot of it, where I am, thankyou!

Hey, Mike. I found your channel a few months ago and have put a lot of your techniques in to my very amateur videos (not on this account, no jerk advertising in comments here) and I can really hear a huge improvement without even buying new gear. Just want to say thank you!

The number one best result came from Mike's video making a mobile set up, of sorts, and placing the mic just inside of a full closet. I don't have space or budget for a dedicated "studio", even the pop-up style, but the closet is close to my PC anyway. I also saw improvements to my workflow by using the dog clicker trick when stumbling over words or situations like that. Faster recording and editing, as well as keeping a very smooth sound from one"take" to the next.

that arm is a rebrand of a cheaper inno gear one, so they just printed their own name on it and upped the price

Hi Mike, the end of that boom which looks like a Rode PSA-1 knock off, should allow you to remove the very end bolt assembly place your cable in and re-assemble it without needing to cut and re-solder. You can do this with the Rode PSA-1 which it looks like a copy of.

22dB Equivalent Noise Level is probably the noise spec of the Skylight, assuming it is exactly the same as the Alctron CK6. That being said, it sounds great!

i think the pop filter is simply too close to the membrane ... to stop and diffuse the airstream it simply has to be further away, same goes for the metal mesh inside that only stops a little bit the rest is just keeping dust away from the membrane

If you put the microphones in a bag submerged in a bucket of water, there I would know how much noise the microphone itself generates, but what you are wrong is to make me listen to the noise of your environment, plus the noise of the mic.

I think that Alctron, eh, I mean, Skylight just sounds ok. Too many mics out there for 200 or less that spank it hard.... King Bee II, Blue Ember, AT2035, Mr. Microphone...

Hello Mike, I found your video because I was about to get this mic in a super deal, but precisely I also found that you and the Hotline nerd found the same humm noise after switching the High Pass Filter . It seems this microphone has some production issues. You can check it here kzread.info/dash/bejne/gZyHmsmcZKjPo6Q.html

Like it do. The Stellar line is really quite excellent...

  • @PDXASM
    @PDXASM2 жыл бұрын

Yeah. This is another case of a company buying pre-manufactured generic mics from China, and putting their own electronics into them. Stellar does this as well (even admits to it, and explains it as a cost-saving measure). They're going for lower sales numbers, but die-hard happy customers by replacing the inner workings with much higher quality components. It's literally cheaper to do it that way than find a manufacturer that will tool up a unique line of shells and grills for you. This is expressly why so many mics-especially budget mics-have near exactly the same form-factor.
