All of the Supplements I Take on a Vegan Diet (not sponsored)

I often get asked what supplements I take on a vegan diet. I mention them briefly in text in "What I Ate Todays", but I thought it’d be nice to have it all in one video and in a bit more detail. This is basically what I've been doing for the last 6 years.

As a meat eater, I would just like to mention that there are a lot of meat eaters, especially if they're interested in fitness, who take a ton of supplements too. So the idiots who look at a video like this and immediately jump to claims of 'vegan unsustainability' are disingenuous AF or just ignorant, and have probably never really taken time to evaluate whether their own diets optimally hit all our necessary micronutrient needs.

I took just as many supplements as a non-vegan, they were just different ones. Thanks for bringing this up! I was anemic as a non-vegan more than once, and I had terribly low Vitamin D without supplements, which the doctor told me is incredibly common in the US for people in general.

whatever the dietary restrictions that you put on yourself, if you must supplement your diet daily that means you are not eating properly. Everything is available to us through the original form of food that has evolved alongside us, with our guts etc...It is not possible to nourish ourselves using (imperfect) manmade pills, and thankfully there's not need for us to do this...because if you are able to eat a vegan diet you also likely have a balanced and healthy diet available to you as well. If you can eat a vegan diet and be healthy without supplements, more power to you--but if you need to 'supplement' real foods with manmade pills that is because you are starving yourself of what you actually need. Maybe in a perfect world we could supplement in a healthy way...but science is just not able to recreate nutrient combinations (or even identify them) that can be absorbed by our bodies in the way that whole foods can...

One thing I wanted to tell you (and everyone) is that the omega 3/6 ratio should be 1/2 to 1/4 and since most people consume too much omega 6, a food like hemp seeds, although it has the right ratio itself, won't bring the overall ratio where it should be, so eating chia or flax seeds (or canola oil, maybe?), foods that have more omega 3 than 6, is necessary for us to get the right ratio, overall.

I didn't take any supplements in over 20 years (being vegan) There have been occasions some vitamins were in fortified foods i bought but i don't buy these on a regular basis at all. Recently i decided to buy B12 (made in China, the type without cyanide). I also decided to buy K2 (which also happened to contain MK7) and i bought Creatine (made in Germany). I really don't think i need anything else if you consider i already did over 20 years pure vegan with zero supplements. I'm considering doing a video series to see if i notice any changes over the next year or two. I also gave up cereals over the last year or two. I have been 95% successful in being cereal free over the last year. The main reason for giving up cereals if for our environment due to terrible farming practices. But it is also akin to eating spoons of sugar all day as cereals digest into sugars. Also, they contain very very few nutrients these days for multiple reasons. Don't kill yourself and the environment try quitting all cereals, that means rice, corm, wheat, beer etc. On a side note i feel no difference in energy levels without cereals, if anything i feel more efficient and more trim at 49 years of age.

Hey! Love your videos!! I have a question regarding supplementation. Do you have any concerns regarding the high amounts of Vitamin A in the Deva prenatal? I've read m a n y articles about it and all seem to conclude that you should not supplement vit.A in the first 60days after conception. The WHO and NHS advice against Vit.A supplementation in the early phase as well. Granted the Deva prenatal although high in vitA still falls short of the upper limit of daily intake, and the upper limit is only determined in the vitamin A retinol form (not the beta carotine which vegans get). So honestly, I'm just really confused as to which prenatal to take (since I don't have access to the Deva prenatal in my country, Norway). Did you have any concerns about vitamin A as well or am I just overthinking this? Thanks!

I take B12 chewable gums every Friday, a Deva D3 and a vegan omega 3 every day, and a deva multi twice a week just to cover the iodine, zinc, etc in case I don’t get enough (I substitute the D3 for the multi when I take it). If I’m short on anything it might be calcium, although I am eating some dark leafy vegs every day as a salad.

@@highlander200268 D2, which is just as good, you can find in mushrooms, and D3 from the sun (plus many plant milks are fortified with vitamin D, just as milk is). For Omega 3 I can get ALA from flax seed, a tea spoon a day, but I just rather take the already converted supplement to lower my omega 6 to omega 3 ratio. I take vitamin D (D3 stand alone, or D2 in the multi) because I tend to burn and develop moles if I’m exposed to the sun for too long (and it is the damaging UV light that gives you vitamin D), so I rather just take the supplement. More than 50% of the population in the US is low on vitamin D, so it’s not just a vegan issue. You can be low on certain vitamins and minerals with any diet, I just happen to be more aware than other people of what my diet lacks, and I supplement for it. Considering the many advantages of a vegan diet in terms of cholesterol, saturated fat and heme iron, TMO, plus my impact on animals and the planet, I’m more than fine making these small sacrifices that don’t cost me more than 15 bucks a month, and don’t take more than 2 pills in a day, which I take with my lunch.

I cannot recommend Nutrigold prenatals enough (and their vitamins, in general). They come in capsules, so there is zero flavor. I've also taken them on an empty stomach with no problems.
