Back in the 70s, I had oscars and the "powder blue/pindani - which have since been renamed. Really loved the two tanks and miss them. Now I am 71 and do not have the ability to care for large tanks. The 60 gal oscar tank had two 8" oscars, NO PLANTS cause they killed them. And I fed a food I made combining liver, spinach, fish pieces, egg and commercially made fish vitamins. I pureed this, cooked it, chilled and then put it in zip lock bags, flatened and frozen. Would then break off small pieces to feed. They loved it. Kept a diatom filter running constantly and did a total breakdown clean every two weeks. They did not like any of the cichlid foods available at the time. Couple of feeders were a treat for them every couple of months. Never had a problem with illness or head worms though I knew others who did. LOVE, LOVE, LOVE your channel and have subscribed. Will continue to watch anything you post on oscars and Malawis. Thank you so much, glad I found you. Watched the oscar video first with "Ebony and Ivory," cute names. Have never seen the white and red variant before, what is that called, please. Back in the 70s, there were only the "natural" or brown, tiger and red varieties Have seen the pure white "albino," but not this white and red combination - gorgeous. If I were able to have oscars again, that is what I would want. Your videos are chock full of beautiful fish and great info!!! Keep up the great work!

My first cichlid is a 6inches Steveni-Taiwan which is a Lake Malawi specie, I really liek its behavior and eating habit. So fun to let the kids feed him which always eat them all. lol!

As I get older I find myself moving away from open water and bigger fish. I'm really liking heavily planted tanks now, with lots of small fish. Lots of killifish and Badis. That being said, Zenzo has me seriously thinking about some shellies!!!

@@PROMOERECTUS yeah I've got some multis they are great fun and breeding a lot now. Going to be upgrading them to a 4ft shallow tank next month. I prefer the dwarf cichlids I have saulosi and rustys together with zero aggression. I don't like the big cichlids

with my mbuna i am an overstocker my 33 gallon has 8 demasoni and 4 yellow labs with some demasoni fry and some snails but it helps the aggression problem and i need to do frequent water changes

Can it be breed in pond or in concrete bassin

I have a Saulosi tank also, a 75. Looks like you've experienced how male-heavy they are. I've grown out dozens of fry, and I'd say 70% or more end up male. My PH is 8.2, and my well water is liquid rock here in Indiana. I'm wondering if this male/female ratio is due to PH, water hardness, temperature... something else? Any thoughts? Really enjoy your channel!

Same here I have saulosi in with rustys but I've had a lot more male saulosi babies survive than females. I have ocean Rock in the tank so just leave the babies inside it.

How odd regarding the male/female ratio. Back in the 90s I met an attorney here in Lakewood, WA whose office tank had a preponderance of the yellow females that he could not even give away to fish stores because there were so many available at the time. He even offered me some but I did not have a tank at the time. Wonder if he still has them and has the same problem?

I found a used 65 gallon tank and after my leak test I plan on using it as a grow out for fry or maybe making a new Cichlid tank and was wondering what your thoughts would be. I want to get a fish that I can easily breed since most of my fish are things I breed for local stores and most of my enjoyment is from breeding. The tank is only a foot wide I believe, would this be best for possibly saulosi or shell dwellers? I am open to any stocking suggestions but would rather have fish on the more peaceful side

I noticed the Fry in your smaller mbuna tank. Do you leave them in there with no problems, or do you seperate them from the adults?

Unless I’m trying to have a very high survival rate, I leave them in the tank with the adults.

Okay you prolly get this question a lot and prolly annoyed by it lol but I have a 40 gal going thru the nitrogen cycle atm just changed out gravel for some Carrib sea cichlid sand and 14lbs of Texas holy rock and my question is what would be a good stocking???? I don’t wanna do peakocks and haps I’m leaning more towards the dwarf mbuna been doing a lot of research witch makes the decision so much harder lol I also like the neolamprolongus leleupi and the yellow labs but fearful they wouldn’t mix well with demasoni mbuna

Need information please!!! I'm not sure of what the type of cichlid is as it was labeled assorted. He is ALL yellow with faint black vertical strips. When I got him he was super bright yellow with a blueish hue and stayed that way until i moved him from a 50? gal 36.5 wide 21.5 tall 18.5 deep to a normal 55 long. Now the yellow is fading and he won't stop glass surfing. I have live plants and pretty good size rock caves. All other fish are loving the new setup and are super colorful. Any ideas on what's up with this guy?? Thanks to anyone that has any input. #justkeepswimming

Them African cichlids you showed that are blue with a black vertical stripes and yellow with the black vertical stripes I do believe we're called Kenyi when I bought them and the yellow one was the meanest fish on the planet it would try attacking me every time I walk by the tank and when I clean the tank it would attack my hand and actually drew blood. That thing actually had teeth.

No, I don’t have any Kenyi. I’ve had them before though.

No hate please, just a hobbyist trying to learn - isn’t detrimental to the fish (stressful) to all be herded like that in a corner? I mean, they can’t really be thriving if they are stuck in one corner, not able to swim freely and inhabit the full length of the tank? It’s as if they were all stuck in a 30 gallons while the other male enjoy a 60 gallons to himself. Do you plan to address the problem at all or as long as there are no injuries, you are fine with the situation?
