All of Me (Jazz violin lesson)

All of Me is a very popular jazz standard, particularly among Gypsy Jazz players. In this violin lesson I look briefly at the melody, and then concentrate on different approaches to soloing. All of Me has an interesting sequence which on the one hand is quite easy because for most of it there are two bars for each chord, giving plenty of time to think. On the other hand many of the chords are not diatonic, so that a single scale will not do to improvise all the way through. Instead you need to treat the whole thing chord by chord. I look at scales, arpeggios, pentatonic scales and blues scales as different approaches to the sequence, and stress the importance of not getting trapped in always starting on the root and ascending.
A free pdf of the sheet music used in this video is available to anyone who subscribes to the channel. Elsewhere on the Fiddle Channel are many more
free jazz violin tuition videos covering standards and specific techniques. I also have two jazz violin books; "Beginning Jazz Violin" and "Exploring Jazz Violin", and there is a Music Gurus subscription video course based on the latter book. See below for more details.

very cool video! wondering if you know if any other fiddle traditions have this bowing pattern in a fast 6/8; down bow on 2, upbow on 3 and 4, down bow on 5, upbow on 6 etc. it occurs in some fiddle tunes in norway, especially in the setesdal form of skuldalsbruri and bråta-per

Hi Ellie. No, I've not come across that before. Sounds like it might be a Norwegian speciality!
