I just watch this again and it's so informative one of your best efforts! I was on eBay looking at Nikon lenses and there's so many of them you get lost in the sauce. I've never bought anything on eBay don't really know how and really don't want to gamble with my money on it either. Do you know if a deal looks too good to be true it probably is. At some point I'll get over this right now it's just a great place to look for me. That money is kind of tight right now to. That's probably more like it.

Is Nikon reading this? Absolutely the worst lens I had was the DX NIKKOR 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G VR II lens. Even the screws were plastic. After one year autofocussing became erratic while overseas. I went to a local camera store, who said he could fix it if I gave him 2 days. He just had to replace a few screws. However, my lens was still under guarantee, so I opted to send the lens to Nikon. So the result was that Nikon claimed I had abused the lens and if I wanted the screws replaced I had to pay more than the price of a new one. And since I abused it, if I did not pay for the investigation (also the equivalent of a new copy), I did not get my lens and the UV-filter back. So not just was the lens crap, also the Nikon consumer experience. Basically, Nikon said that I cannot handle their modern dingy modern products, so I have since bought mostly Ais lenses and one newer midrange zoom (second hand, of course). I have no issues with the Ais lenses, but I wonder if Nikon misses the turnover?

FWIW - The Nikkor 500mm F4 VR G is an amazing lens. Auto-focus is fast and it locks on confidently. The output is superb - I found one just over a month ago, and I notice Mark Smith uses one now. I love mine and I look forward to some great adventures with it.

For D850 landscapes, would you get better results with the 18-30mm zoom, or one of the 20mm or 24mm primes + cropping? (The Tamron 15-30 and Nikon 14-24 don't take conventional filters, so I've ruled them out.)

18-30 zoom? lands on the D850 id rather have the 20mm 1.8G, honestly however the MOST useful is the 24mm PC-E, you can do easy panoramas and PC control of converging lines best of all would be the 19mm PC-E

I would be very grateful if you could answer this question for me please. I recently bought a 2nd hand nikkor 17-55 2.8 online. The AF works perfectly but when you turn the focus ring it never stops. All my other lenses stop at infinity and the closest focus distance. However all my other lenses are junk so I'm wondering if this is a fancy pants lens thing or is the focus ring broken? Thanks!

From Nikon I have the 50mm 1.4G, the 24-120mm 4.0G VR and I'm buying the 180mm 2.8 ED AI-S next week. I also have the Zeiss ZF.2's Planar 1.4/50 and Makro Planar 2/100. I agree the kit lens is not well made, though optically reasonably good and the VR is definitely a plus. I think to get a 300mm 2.8 AI-S and perhaps the 500mm 4.0 AI-P. On the wider end will go with a Zeiss ZF.2 Distagon 2/25 and the 14-24mm 2.8G or the ZF.2 Distagon 2.8/15.

You have to specify on *which* attributes are bad. -- If the 80-400 was half its price, and Nikon could service it at normal prices, I would call it very descent for someone wanting to take only 1 lens at a school event or concert etc. if the 200 is not long enough. -- The 70-200 f4 is $900 refurb, excellent VR, sharpness and colors great, and low weight. It's not a portrait lens, but it's very good for other things. And won't give you a panic attack if you hit it accidentally because it's cheap. -- The 35 1.8G has so much chromatic aberration that pics with high contrast areas (especially snow/trees, or white sings/banners/walls in street photos, edges of buildings/bridges) turn almost useless. -- You forgot a non-excellent but very practical lens (I re-bought it for that): 16-35 VR. The 18-35 is optically better, and I hate zooms, but the VR is a savior in internal dark spaces (old buildings, churches, museum-like areas), night hours in the city, narrow streets in low light, even when driving! (that's how good its VR is). -- The 24-85 vr may be the best choice at a party, but try any form of landscape or internal space - it eliminates all sense of depth, bringing the background forward, so it's got its limitations, one should print a label on the lens "not for landscapes". -- I insist that under 20mm, the 14-24 renders a lot better than the 15-30 Tamron, with the latter flattening everything to the point of "cartoonish" landscape rendering between 15-18. the Nikon behaves like a prime throughout its range with incredible cinematic sense of depth (save for the annoying and frequent flare - which needs you carrying a black dog funnel for cover). So I think you forgot the *practical uses* of some lenses. What are they good for.

The Tamron SP primes seem to have rather ugly bokeh. If you mind that, please better do careful review. Tip: Good bokeh doesn't show off if your forecround object is only an arm's length away. Every lens is kind-of-good then. Try people photography with serious distances to the person (one which is appropriate and typical for the focal length in question). Wide-angle means eg. a full-body motiv like in fashion photography.

The 50mm 1.8G is an excellent lens, especially for street portraiture - it's light, fast enough, sharp enough and cheap enough to bring along everywhere, especially coupled with a cheap 3000 body, which has the same sensor of its bigger brothers. What could be better than good image quality in a small and affordable package? Talking about portraiture, the 105mm micro might suck wide open (horrible fringing), and it's performance under flat light might be appalling, but step it down to f/5.6 and feed it some sunshine and you'll get the best skin tones you've seen - it just devours all the colors of the scene to render a stunning photo. The 105mm is quite lovely as a micro lens as well, given good lighting. Thanks for the lens recommendations!

I owned it briefly, it was a used copy in good condition. Very nice performance, excellent VR, but the 2nd element had lots (lots!) of dust, previous owner was in wildlife. So I sent it to Nikon (central) since only Nikon central can service the specific lens, they asked me about $600 to clean the dust from one element (normally a $50 charge). So I returned the lens. They discontinued it. It's not a bad lens, it may be problematic though if anything happens to it.

The recent prescription multifocal lenses are impossible to use at the computer as I have to cock my head eleven o'clock high (as though I'm stargazing) and look through the lowest part of the frame and even then there is the narrowest of windows. The glasses seem geared for driving facilitating quick transitions from the long to near fields of view - from the horizon to the vehicle console. :) I think the glasses are also addressing an astigmatism which apparently impacts my night vision. When I'm at the computer I continue using a pair of dedicated glasses.
