The cloth jar covers used to be very popular on jars sealed with paraffin wax. Over sized jar covers were used to form a semi-jar sock too. - For myself, i used a lot of jar covers when I used pantry shelves to seperate the kitchen from the rest of the living areas when I lived in a small place and space. That and a mix of containers, food stuffs, and other to complete the visual "decor". - Oddly enough, I used a number of jar covers on regular tin cans of purchased goods for visual appeal.

Oh I forgot to tell you all. We were wandering how we were gonna make it through the month. Someone left a basket of canned goods and a few dry goods out in the parking lot. I thought someone accidentally left it so I took it in and the lady told me it was trash. I was like oh! Wow! I saw it as Gods provision for us because we weren't sure how we were gonna get through the month. All the cans except one were in date. We actually got things we needed in that stuff. I was feeling so grateful and blessed. Still feelin blessed.

I like the variety that my storage food allows me. All kinds of beans, pasta shapes, canned veggies, canned fruits, flours & grains, etc... I like to mix & match & try new recipes, along with old favorites!! EG, now in this heat wave, I am making all kinds of salads -- with greens, beans, rice, tabboleh, & dips to accompany them -- hummus, yogurt, sour cream, & pickled veggies -- beets, carrots, cucumbers, pickles of various kinds all to avoid heating up the kitchen!!

Good morning sweet Tessie ♥ Food storage is a huge blessing! Yesterday I was watching some news clips regarding Beryl the hurricane I believe. The were showing a grocery store and interviewing the manager. She said she opened like an hour or two early due to circumstances and they showed this huge line and police monitoring to make sure everything was going good. I know that studies show the average American household doesn't have more than a weeks worth of food. I know that people in my family don't and it scares me. I try to stock up on sales when I am able. This year I will be canning food for the first time. I already do jams with water baths but I want to can fresh foods I am blessed with. I live in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and we can get snowed in during the winter. I want to make sure I have enough food on hand.

I grew up with more food prep than many do today. Often it was to take advantage of seasonal produce prices, put up produce from our and other's yards/ gardens, and take advantage of sales/ clearance meats. We generally kept no more than a year's worth of any one item. It has been a practice I've carried on in most of my adult life with one additional goal amd that is to not have to do a grocery store run mid cook; particularly staples like flour, seasonings, sauces, and condiments. As an open container draws down, i write it on the list and start checking the prices at all the stores I go, cast my eye sideways looking for a coupon, and hope for a sale before I have to buy. The replacement may sit in the shelf for a while but often not all that long.

I don't home can, but do freeze things and purchase foods from the store. I used to have TOO much food stored for the same reason you said. Now I don't. Still have some, but more manageable. I have been going through all our food and eating up the older stuff and not replacing as much or as often. I still would say that I have about 6 months worth of food..maybe a bit more, but doing way better at it and keeping it organized better. Enjoying that more. Thanks Tessie for sharing.

I think variety when storing is key! No one wants to eat the same thing everyday! The dates on cans from the store are not an expiration date they are a best buy date meaning that date is where they may start losing flavor. I have shelf milk with a best buy of December 2023 and I needed some and didn't want to go to the store. The milk was still fine. Remember in all the doomsday movies when someone comes across a can of fruit or veggies they are excited and don't look for a best buy! and if you are still in doubt google what best buy means. Food use to have expirations to make people throw it out and buy more and the people that be caught on and made them change it to a best buy instead. From what I understand the only thing you need to worry about the best buy is on baby formula and food. Thank you for sharing Tessie! Stay blessed!

Looks good Tessie. I go through my food also. I thought I was almost out of tomatoes, I put up 22 qts. and about 12 pints and a couple of half pints. I'm glad I had a few left but it surprised me that I had some. I kept a list of what I put up but never wrote down when I took out. When making soup I just go down in basement grab whatever I need. Its so wonderful to have on hand and its fresh. You can't beat that.

Food storage is good to a point. Job loss, medical bills happen , no vehicle working . That’s just to name a few. But, you can go over board stocking too much that it goes bad. Dry good such as beans that last years properly stored, rice wheat berries, oatmeal, corn meal stuff that if stored properly is good long term . Canned goods yes but not as much or as long term like the dry goods. You can make bread and pasta if you learn and have too. Bread machines are good . But learning to make bread by hand is good as well. Learn to make gravy in case you want it and don’t have a packet. It’s healthier. The list goes on. Just because you know how does not mean you have to do every single thing from scratch 365 days a year. But it’s nice to learn just in case you have to. Garden if you can. It saves money and is better than store bought a lot of times. ❤ great video.

It was a friend who made me realize the importance of having a pantry/food storage that was uniform in looks, where ALL the canned foods are on open shelving where I can see and grab an item with no effort. Before that, I would forget where this and that canned item was at. And sadly, I would end up dumping food. Dumped food is $$$$ dumped.😞

I love the idea of like the servants quarters and the main servant woman, I cant remember what that woman or man might have been called. If it wasnt head housekeeper then I dont know. She would check her larder and do an order and then lock it up. Servants were very proud of their loftier positions. Im like I dont care about those above stairs, but the lowly servants and how they made it through. Those are interesting stories but only if they are clean, modest without any of the crud that comes with wordly shows.

HI, Tessie. I really appreciate your perspective about food storage-sharing this. You're right. It is a way of life, and by having a well-stocked, working pantry, we're ready to handle the current challenges (and whatever the future may bring). In the past, I've done a few pantry challenges for fun, and now, I keep those tips in mind to maintain my pantry. I also plan to hang a copy of my inventory on my shelving so I know what homemade mixes I have, what is on hand that's home canned or store bought, and, no matter who goes to the store, we're not overbuying one item while depleted of another. Is that book still available anywhere? It looks like an excellent resource. Have a blessed day!

My caregiver is constantly asking me about my food storage and asking me, is it still good? It's past its Best Buy. Is it still good? How long does your kind food that you can't last and I'm always telling her it's fine, it's good it's on a rotation.😊

I grew up with home canned food. Nothing like those home canned green beans in the winter when there are no fresh beans from the garden. Would please consider doing a video on how to make those seasoned rice mixes and hamburger helper? They sound amazing. God Bless.

Tessie you should not stack your canning jars of food. They should be in a single layer. It could result in having a false seal on the jar underneath.

Have you thought about organizing your food somewhat alphabetically? Is that even possible or practical? Is there any significance to the key around your neck?😊❤

Have you ever had trouble double stacking your canning jars? I’ve heard you’re not supposed to do that but I see you did and you have a successful canning pantry so I thought I’d get your advice.

I love this video! Do you have recipes for some of your canned dry mixes like hamburger helper or the onion rolls? I'm a teacher with kids in sports. I'd love to make some of these jars to have on hand for the busy football season coming up. Thank you!
