Regarding the separate glass opening of the trunk. I have the current 3-series touring and that opening actually gives me much more usable space. When you are vacationing you can first put in all the big things the normal way up to the shelf and then you can close the trunk and open the glass window and fill all the available spaces. Try to do this without the separate opening and everything will fall out. They cheaped out too much on material and important thing on this car just to introduce a bunch of gimmicks.

I have the previous generation 540i and looking to buy a new hybrid estate. The lack of separate glass opening on this one brings the new e63 amg into competition and likely in front of this, all things considered. No clue why BMW shot their own feet.

Aside from our different opinion on synthetic versus natural animal skins you are by far the absolute best in thoroughly reviewing a car from its ergonomics the appreciation for quality aspects to the performance and the drivability of the car your reviewing. Attention to detail and appreciation for quality are your unique qualities which avails to the viewers of your channel a comprehensive snapshot of the car that one maybe considering to purchase. There isn’t a minute in your reviews that isn’t filled with pertinent information that one could never obtain from a dealership. Great job!

I cannot understand the push for animal friendly material for the seats. As long as we eat meat the cows skin should be used Leather is bio degraded synthetic material is based on petroleum products and certainly not earth friendly nor biodegradable like leather is which is a organic material . Leather does not come from endangered animals but from animals used for food . The push is for the use of biodegradability and recyclability for cars . Synthetic petroleum based seat covering certainly does not fall into this category

Thank you very much for your interest in this topic. I also bought cars with animal skin leather seats before I did my research and got to know the industry. The most important thing is: With today's modern materials, you have nothing to lose, just to gain. You achieve the same kind of luxury and comfort or even better while having the same or better durability with less impact on humans, animals and the environment. You can use fabric/cloth, microfibre or leatherette. The classic approach is using oil/plastic as source material. Overall, a vehicle contains about 300 kg plastic. A car seat needs about 5 kg plastic. So the overall plastic share for the seats is very low and it is at this moment the most efficient way to produce a car seat. A couple of litres of fuel equals a car seat basically. So if you want to save oil/plastic, rather look at consumption for energy, fuel and heating and to other car parts than the seat. Note that animal skin leather also always contains a plastic coating for durability. However, long-term we should of course find raw oil alternatives. So going further, seats can be made from recyclables (e.g. from PET-bottles or old fishing nets) or even increased share of plant-based materials (like pine oil, canola oil or start-up materials like Pinatex from pineapple leaves or Desertex from cactus fibre or the mixed-plant-based Mirum, so be seen at kzread.info/dash/bejne/hWWVsLyen8Tanag.html). On a calculation base, by ditching animal skin leather from car interiors, the amount of emissions (CO2e) is reduced by 85 (!) % (www.press.bmwgroup.com/africa-dom-easteurope/article/detail/T0403389EN/on-the-market-from-2023:-bmw-and-mini-models-with-vegan-interiors?language=en) - and that is a very conservative calculation. So it is at this moment the most important thing you can do to make car interiors more sustainable. A good example for high-end luxury with ventilated animal free seats is the BMW X7 with Sensafin: kzread.info/dash/bejne/Y6SGsM2QadHYoto.html And the Kia EV9 with plant-based oil share: kzread.info/dash/bejne/aKqMx7KKmcKzcc4.html New leatherette materials can be superior in every aspect, even for cleaning: kzread.info/dash/bejne/p21ou7qDZ5W7hKQ.html More and more natural materials are rising: kzread.info/dash/bejne/oIaH1bp-ntqudNI.html Also check out what the animal skin leather industry tried to with our channel: kzread.info/dash/bejne/oISTpdiFnMSsnKw.html For seeing how the animals are being treated and transported in the global leather industry, watch this footage: kzread.info/dash/bejne/pp-epaOmoZTFaKg.html Note that the footage is genuine and was recorded by a highly decorated investigative journalist in Germany I know myself personally. Also a group of researchers and German journalists from public media could recent directly trace the connection between car animal leather production and illegal burning down Amazon rain forest: www.daserste.de/information/reportage-dokumentation/ard-story/videos/illegales-leder-video-100.html In a high animal skin grade, the animals are specifically raised for this matter. However even if meat is the "first" misuse case, the hide remains a profitable body part. That means: If manufacturers put animal leather in a car and you demand it as a customer, you give your money to an industry that earns money by oppressing humans, animals and harms the environment, you make them more profitable. Alternatively, you could support industries with your wallet which try to improve the sustainability of materials. Also, if you turn the argument around to "meat is the waste of the leather industry" you realize that it doesn't make sense (and is ethically doubtful) to discuss the primary use of individual body parts of mammals. Mind experiment: You are getting slain down on the street; would it matter to you if it was for your smartphone or for your purse? Remember that animal skin leather is no different to fur, fur is just leather where the hair is still on. And fur is widely not accepted for clothing anymore, and of course not for cars. We cannot change what we have bought in the past, but with more information and compassion we can change how we decide in the future. For a great insight into sustainability in the automotive industry, you can also check out our extensive documentary: kzread.info/dash/bejne/X2ybsLqlgqrUl6Q.html

I have to agree with Thomas here. When animal skins are processed with chemicals to make leather it is no longer so biodegradable. And when animals are used for food it is using so much resources for land, water and fertilizer for feed that could go directly to humans, it is not so sustainable either. Also there are the ethical problems with using animals.

@@autogefuehl Leather will always last longer than any synthetic product we can make. Current best synthetic leathers maybe match the lowest possible grade of leather,. That's why it took so long to get synthetic leather steering wheels and even then they are already peeling before warranty expires. Real leather is also an indicator for quality, because synthetic leather ranges from absolute trash to decent and you cannot tell which is which, especially if the manufacturer doesn't state which they use.

As usual with Thomas, it's an excellent test, and I appreciate the current generation of the 5 Series that it exists as an electric car in Kombi versions, finally!!! Finally a normal body (even if the design is debatable, as I see BMW still hasn't overcome the design identity crisis, despite the fact that it seemed to be the case after the F10 and G30 generations, but that's not so important) finally an electric car that is not an SUV or a weird pseudo-futuristic aerodynamic oddity that's impossible to look at.

Great review, and the Lea meter really is useful. BMW seem to have arrived at a UI/UX which is a usable blend of software and physical controls. Apart from the speed and suspension the bit which caught me unawares was the sophistication of the Level 2 automatic driving. A touring/combi is not the form of car I really want. I am really after something full EV which will replace my last Audi RS3. On range of this EV my take is that 250 miles is quite enough. I hate to let an ICE get much below half full and that transfers over to EVs, where I think little and often recharging really works. On a long journey I would want a break well before getting to 250 miles anyway. BTW would you get in to the habit of commenting on whether an EV can do vehicle to grid? The price of this is clearly absurd at €125k but presumably you are happy to pay the premium for the badge.

@@szneka12 It's also complete and utter BS. Look at for e.g. the second hand prices of 2 year old Porsche Taycans; obviously there will be a significant hit in percentage from the new price, but that's the same for any type of car at any price segment. Not to mention the fact that an EV inherently has much fewer parts that needs regular and costly maintenance, the only reason they currently may drop second hand value in parity with ICE cars is because of rapid technology improvements, causing even fairly recent EVs to compare poorly to new ones.

Sorry, Thomas, but why do you say that the car will somehow have 100 kms more range at over 20C versus 12-13C? The heater will not have that much of an impact and there is nothing else that could cause a range drop between over 20C and 12C. That’s not how electric car batteries work.

In the UK I'd have a 520D like my previous car, but they don't offer any diesels here now. Not impressed with the latest idrive it seems like too much is having to be done on the screen.
