I was originally considering purchasing a Toyota Grand Highlander, but after watching your reviews of the new 3-row SUV CX90, I am completely swayed. This powerful machine is a game-changer in the world of SUVs, with its sleek design, top-of-the-line features, and impressive performance on the road. The CX90 provides an incredibly smooth and comfortable ride, and its handling and acceleration are simply outstanding. The attention to detail and overall craftsmanship of this vehicle is truly remarkable. Thank you so much for all your great work!

Toyota is one of the shareholders of the Mazda company, so even if you buy a Mazda, Toyota still benefits from selling them (mazda products). From what I know, the hybrid engine or hybrid plugin used on the Mazda is a Toyota powertrain, namely a 2.5L 4-cylinder plug-in hybrid (maybe it could be said to be the same engine as the RAV4 Prime or Lexus NX450H+).

I’m just gonna guess that Mazda figures buyers who want to seat five in the front two rows on a regular basis are going to choose a larger vehicle, even in this segment - or if that is a priority and you want that in this vehicle, you will be happy with the lower trims. I get that doesn’t apply to everyone; they either have to force some trade-offs, or else absorb the cost of greater build complexity.

@@trumpisastump9382 Have you ever worked in an automotive assembly plant?? Offering another build option - especially one that is going to involve different critical safety options such as seating - can mean different floor anchors, anchor points for the belts, installation of the center console, etc. Big bucks to accommodate that, in terms of inventory, manpower, and making sure it's not fucked up (quality control). Now you have to either build that complexity into a special-order factory option, or else add yet another variant (inventory cost) into the cars that sit on dealer lots. That's why Japanese makers go with models and packages instead of individual options at the factory.

Great review. It's definitely a good-looking vehicle!! Tastewise, the exterior is not for me because it seems too bubbly. I like a tad more angles on the exterior design, and that is why I got the MDX two months ago. I think if this CX90 had the hood configuration of the CX9 I would be all in. The only reason I didn't get the CX9 was because it didn't have a V6 option. But that CX9 has such a stately appearance. I still do double takes when I see one on the road. Great job guys!!! Hey guys. Great reviews. I want to know how either the phev or the inline 6 compares to the nx hybrid when it comes to quietness as well as refinement when going over bumps and bad roads. I realize this might seem like comparing apples to oranges, but I am on a list for a top tier nx hybrid, but if this cx checks all the boxes, I might cancel the nx and wait for the smaller cx-70. I am just a little reluctant because I heard some of the reviewers complain about not being the quietest in shielding against bad road surfaces. Everyone talks about how much fun it is to drive and the powertrains but Mazda might have sacrificed comfort and cushion for power and handling. If you had to choose between a cx70 and a nx hybrid, which would you choose?

It appears that Andrea was enjoying driving the CX-90, with Zach holding on for dear life! Also, regarding the seating configurations, remember the original Chrysler Pacifica? Three rows, but only room for six. I agree that Mazda (and its competitors) should offer seven or even eight passenger seating on its higher trim levels. Not every customer for a vehicle like this wants or needs only six passenger seating. I think Mazda (and others) do this to simplify manufacturing (fewer options).

@@Brian-jv8iyI don't agree with your analogy. Honda weakened their engines and worsened the driving experience in the name of fuel economy ( and maybe due to cost cutting). Mazda has developed a large SUV with a powerful engine, mild hybrid, and made dramatic improvement in their interior design, and has still kept it priced below that of a similar luxury SUV. My concern is NOT that Mazda will fail, rather that the price of this vehicle will increase significantly as it is appreciated by the market. And, there is something to the "made in Japan" thing.

I love to see you both have such a good time "working". As for the second row options - all manufacturers should always, always, always offer the option of two or three seats. They shouldn't "assume" every potential buyer agrees with their reasoning. They should think of it this way: always offering the option = fewer complaints. Nobody will complain if they have a choice.

@Andera and @Zack I’m in the market for three row SUV and really divided now between CX 90, Grand Highlander and Palisade! What do you recommend with respect to third row seating? Which one of these would you recommend w.r.t technology? Which is the safest/sporty of all?

@@Motormouth... Appreciate your quick response. Based of the Auto Show, which of these cars have more third row space. I know we might be comparing Apples to Oranges. CX 90 has a Phev and Grand Highlander has hybrid! Which is why I see a lot of consumers are confused in making a decision, especially the waiting time doesn’t help us either. I’m a great fan of your channel. Keep rocking! Cheers!

In Australia, there’s gonna be a diesel variant in the CX-90. The e-Skyactiv D AWD producing 250hp and 406lbft of torque from a 3.3-litre 6cyl turbodiesel motor. The CX-60 comes with that exact powertrain as well.

Curious if they've addressed their rusting issues. My family has owned a 2004 MPV, a 2007 Mazda3, a 2009 Mazda5, and a 2012 Mazda5. All of which developed rust around the lower trim or rear wheel wells. The 2012 in under two years the B pillar had bubbling under the paint/black trim. They all drove great but the rust was terrible.

This is interesting to hear,. We've had a 2014 CX5 since new in Minnesota with zero rust issues, but my 2011 Nissan developed a rusty wheel wheel arch within 6 years and now has the nasty stuff popping up everywhere.

Great job again, Zack and Andrea! Another 3 row that competes with this vehicle and those you mentioned is the Nissan Pathfinder. We just got an SL, took it for a 700 mile drive, and love the comfort, ride, space and features. The price is $10,000 - $20,000 less than those you mentioned with the same features. We even got the bench seats! The lease deals Nissan offers are very appealing and they do have inventory, so you won't pay thousands above MSRP.

We're in the 3rd act of life and would rather have a bench 2nd row since it's always folded down and we want something flat all the way across. We've had passengers twice in the last 3 years, but carry lots of 'stuff' around from here to there.

  • @nineradvocate

The unavailability of 3 seat 2nd and 3rd rows in the upper trims I attribute to the size and scale of Mazda as a carmaker. Heavy levels of options and customization are typically reserved for either the most mass market brands or very expensive luxury brands. Mazda is neither despite competing with both. I don't think that is a bad thing except in this case.
