I love how much you acknowledge that you have to be in the right headspace to read certain books. And also that it’s normal to put a book down and restart it another time.

I loved Utopia Avenue! It takes place in that David Mitchell universe so you get mentions/brief appearances of characters from at least Cloud Atlas and The Bone Clocks, but it feels like you're watching a band from the 60's have their rise to stardom. Loved getting drawn into that world.

Great way to layout the shelves. I read Miss Pettigrew Lives For A Day, and it's like nothing else I've ever read. It's a quick read and really quite full of joy and fun. I highly recommend. Enjoy getting through your books.

This was a lovely tour of the books! And am happy we featured in it! I think you'd like Love and Rage - I hope so! Just seen that Girlhood comes out in paperback in may - so I'll pick it up then as I think I'm going to like it too! Siân ❤️

I read Golem Girl this past week, and it was one of the very best books I have ever read. It's huge and it took me only three days to finish because I couldn't put it down.

I have my shelves divided into non-fiction, classics for adults,, classics for children, and fiction. I have quite a few of the same books not read on my shelves and now I have added some more just by watching your video. :)

I can’t wait to hear your thoughts on Betty. I thought it was absolutely superb despite having one or two flaws. I have never adored a character as much as Landon Carpenter or been in such floods of tears over a novel - it’s deeply touching.

Middlemarch is great. I had to do it for English Alevel in 1980! I’m slowly reading one big book via audio every 4 months. I started A Fine Balance in January and still haven’t finished it.

I just recently read Devotion by Hannah Kent and absolutely loved it. The atmosphere and writing was fantastic. My favourite by her so far.

Really enjoyed this video, Mercy :) Consequences is very grim and pretty heart breaking but was one of my favourite reads of last year. I thought it was so well written and the subject matter of women's limited options was so subtly and cleverly handled. You do need to be in the right frame of mind for it though. Awakening sounds like a book I would love so will have to see if I can pick it up!

i love the way youve split your tbr up! & its nice to hear about books youre excited about especially. i just put a world between on my tbr ! i also will be looking so forward to hearing you talk about willa & hesper it looks rly pretty ! i cant help you in terms of having read the border of paradise but i am in the same position as you with it!! i have decided to keep it for a little longer but i think if i have picked it up within the next two or so yrs i will pass it on.... it just seems full of Difficult Topics which im not particularly up for just reading about casually !!

Yes, Willa and Hesper is beautiful! It is so hard to want to pick up books on more difficult topics. For some reason I'm ok with it in non-fiction but I struggle with it in fiction sometimes.

I couldn’t have a bookshelf filled with books like the bottom one. Because I would feel guilty for not reading them and this shelf will probably scare me and I wouldn’t approach them LOL. I have read all the books from Indigenous authors except for the last book of Vermette (the Break is so good) so I can only say : go for it ! I have read Middlemarch and loved it. I still have Betty on my TBR too. When you showed your bottoms shelf I did recognize books you were happy to get. Oh I read the short stories collection of Goddard (not sure of the name) a few years ago and loved it. Your other books are pretty interesting, looking forward to seeing you reviewing them.

I know what you mean. I do feel much less inclined to reach for them! I might make myself read one book from each shelf on rotation to make sure I don't ignore them for another year! And I'm glad to hear how much you enjoyed the short story collection by Goddard :)

I would perhaps approach Palestine via fiction first Mercy. “Mornings in Jenin” by Susan Abulhawa is great but harrowing. “Salt Houses” by Hala Alyan (the same author who wrote the Syrian-Lebanese-Palestinian family saga “The Arsonist’s City” that I really loved and recommended to you!) Given some of your previous books you may like one non fiction - “Palestine: A Socialist Introduction”, edited by Sumaya Awad and Brian Bean

@@MercysBookishMusings I am so sorry for mentioning that book so often;) I find Aylan’s writing more accessible and less harrowing on Palestine. Russell at Ink & Paper blog loved the Arsonists City - I liked his review here from 16 mins (February Wrap Up 2021 - KZread) - the characters are flawed but I like that, and it shows less stereotypical portrayals including LGBT+. It was one of his books of the year - kzread.info/dash/bejne/o5lozKZwYNfZhcY.html
