Saddest part of that line: "... what I was BRED for." Fucking Jedi employed child soldiers and slaves in their war. Palpatine may not have been a hero, but neither were the Jedi. & that includes the ones I really liked.

I don’t think Rex had anywhere near a mutation. He’s just seen a lot more than normal clones. I’m not just talking about missions and battles but he saw Obi-Wan and Anikins relationship deteriorate. He saw Ashoka framed and her leave the Jedi. He’s lost so many men who were close to him. He witnessed Krell, slavery, Slick’s Treachery and Anakins relationship with Padme. He witnessed more shit than any other clone trooper on and off the battlefield and that’s what changed him.

I think to an extent he was more like Jango and thus more independent and free thinking than some of the other clones, that combined with his experiences, in my opinion, are what changed him from a loyal soldier for the republic to a rebel who realized the whole war was basically a lie

slicer940 literally EVERY Jango Fett clone was shaped by their experiences during the war. Some positively, some negatively. I suggest reading Karen Traviss’s Republic Commando novels for more about that: they’re a good look into the lives of troopers: how they were similar and different, and how they saw each other and the galaxy around them.

That was a good thing though. Otherwise he wouldn't have sacrificed himself, and Fives wouldn't have survived to discover Order 66. The Republic came THIS close to discovering Palpatine's entire plan, and, while we all know how that turned out, it would never have happened without Hardcase sacrificing his life for Fives. Even if Hardcase was defective, it certainly wasn't an undesirable mutation.

I think it was both genetic defects and their environment, as many Jedi tried to convince their Clones to be more independent and compassionate like them, which is why Tarkin hated the Clones as he saw some as acting too nice and too much like the Jedi. Of course, depending on the Jedi or Republic officer the defects may not have manifested.

Well It doesn't help that Tarkin was called a vile and repulsive by princess Leia. I don't blame her one bit I never liked Tarkin to begin with either so full of himself. Vader could have easily kick his ass if the Emperor would just allow him to. The fact Emperor Palpatine gave him authority over Lord Vader is an insult I say lol. Like come on a Regional Governor has more authority than a Sith Lord really. Tarkin was a cold and distant pyscophant who did not deserve to command such honourable clone troopers. So glad to see that smug shit die on the death star.

Sad that the Nulls were not mentioned at all. I think they're the one of the most unique Clone batch. They play a significant role in the Republic Commando books which are Legends which is why I assume they weren't covered? The Nulls were the very first batch of Clones made by the Kaminoans and fit the theme of this video perfectly. They were deemed to be defective by the Kaminoans because they were found not to be following orders enough with too much of a mind of their own. On the other hand, they had perfect eiditic memory and are much more phsyically capable than the clones that followed. Overall, they were much closer to the Jango Fett formula than other Clones. The Kaminoans decided to terminate them at 2 years old but one of the Cuy'val Dar, who were recruited to train Republic Commandos, jumped in and resuced them. The Nulls became fiercely loyal only to this Seargant, Kal Skirata, and became the Black Ops of the GAR. After Order 66, they deserted.

  • @an0rangutan

The description is quite apt. How didn't they get terminated by the Kaminoans? From what I know, the Kaminoans hate imperfections and defects unless they were intentional. Kaminoans probably wouldn't let defects live just on principle, even if they were superior in some way, because it would be evidence of a mistake on their part.

Concerning the six fingers- I bet there were some, but they got terminated by the Kaminoans for being “imperfect/defective “. the clones were raised to be ambidextrous, to be better suited for handling all kinds of weaponry (Source: Republic commando novels).

  • @inquisitorgarza312

You know that the Kaminoians were full hot air when even their perfect Clone Army had several genetic mutations. Sure some of these mutations were positive like the Bad Batch, but we have to keep in mind that when you manipulate genetic material you risk some unforeseen mutations. The Kaminoians were great in genetics manipulation they couldn’t foreseen that there mutations could really have destroyed the unity of the Clone Army. Though considering that the Galactic Republic was buying hundreds of thousands of Clone Troopers a day, one could be forgiven that the Kaminoians were under pressure in creating a Galactic wide army so they probably couldn’t keep track of every mutations that was spotted in every Clone. There a theory that Tup may had a Mutation that affect the Chip that gave out order 66, and because of that Darth Sidious master plan could have been ruined because of the Kaminoians neglecting their job in provide a stable Clone Army for the Republic. And I remember right Tup was also getting brain canner, and canners could be genetically in nature, so lord knows how many Clones could have a deadly medical condition without the Republic High Command knowing about it.

Even ignoring the side effects of genetic manipulation, clones age twice as fast as a baseline, so they would get cancers at 'younger' ages. It's like rats, they have very short lives and are usually absolutely riddled with various cancers after a few years of life.

Two important notes that many may not have recognized in the moment... When 99 tried to make up for his defects by "being a hero" (or trying to live up to the others, doesn't really matter how you look at it) it is important to note how the other troops were holding out behind cover until he got shot (at which point they recklessly came out of cover to provide more offensive cover fire). This factor would surely have diminished the effectiveness of the GAR if these responses ever became commonplace (this also applies to the bad batch, as losing such a valuable more individualized and specialized clone would have likely provoked similar responses). Secondly, the reason why Rex probably made the decision he did as far as the deserter actually speaks to a larger problem with the clones that you addressed both directly as well as indirectly several times... What do you do with the clones after the war?... More importantly, what do the clones do after the war??? A big part of keeping soldiers noses clean, following orders, and staying alive is their having something besides war and death to look forward to. Rex probably wanted to turn the deserter in, but he needed to believe that himself and his brothers had something else to look forward to besides death. The existence of desertion is not an absence of bravery nor of honor in many cases, rather the preservation of this need personified. This is a wonderful example of a trait that was discouraged that may actually have proven more useful than detrimental as the war concluded (resulting in stronger less out of control, particular during leave, troopers). I could go deeper into either of these scenarios, but these are just two points I immediately thought of as unexplored aspects of arbitrarily choosing purely circumstantial criteria when determining what are preferable behaviors. PS: It's also a pretty good bet that if not for the Jedi Rex might not have chosen to spare the deserter despite his personal feelings, though the Jedi often made too much use of their feelings causing far too many deaths via poor strategy this was definitely a show of the potential upside to their involvement as well. If history is written by the victor, then who decides history when the victor dies off or is killed?... The answer, the survivors. History isn't just taught in the classroom, it's also taught in the home front and within a local population frequently. Who knows how many of these survivors the Jedi and clones helped save went on to join the Alliance and eventually put a stop to what the Jedi were not equipped for. :)

I was hoping that the clone that collected clanker fingers would be featured. I liked him even though we only saw him a brief moment. He was the only one who dared to stand up and question the traitor clone. Also really liked how the other clones in his team accepted him even though they knew he was a bit different and tried to cover for his weirdness.

If they (the Kaminoans) could make more of Wrecker, they could make a new "Heavy Trooper" position, one that could carry larger weapons and/or be more armored (and then simply bulldoze the B1s). And Crosshair would "just" be a superior sniper/recon version. At least those two would be the most logical (in my mind) to focus on.

I feel like the Bad Batch may have been a mix of experimental and random mutations. Ex: Wrecker may have been an experiment to make clones stronger, and Tech or Crosshair may have come out smaller but with desirable traits that made them acceptable to the Kaminoans.

I think Cut had a deep sense for loyalty to his team/batchmates, since he says "All I cared about, my team, was gone". So deep the Jedi would call it attachment. After loosing his team, he had nothing left to fight for, so he deserted. This is also the reason why I think Cut was either a Commando or the batch leader (like Hevy). Slick and Rex on the other hand learned it. Slick learned from Ventress and Rex from Fives, Anakin and Ahsoka.

Another example of genetic defect's/mutations are Omega and Sister, both of which are examples of either direct or indirect Kaminoian interference. Sister was a clone that ended up being born with gender dysphoria and eventually transitioning. The Kaminoians likely allowed her to live to study how her clone brothers and Jedi commanders would react to her transition. And since her gender identity didn't interfere with her combat abilities the Kaminoians likely were glad for the data. Omega on the other hand was a specific creation of a Kaminoian in order to fulfill a role they wished. They wanted a surrogate daughter and likely were inspired by Jango's own child. This further shows Kaminoians willingness to experiment and outright craft defects how and when they wanted. Also just to clarify I'm not saying being Trans or a Woman is a "defect", because, like I'm both of those things? All I'm saying is that in the context of clones those things would be considered defects. Just wanted to clarify that in case someone got all angy.

For the last point about why they couldn’t take desirable clone mutations and use those as templates, from my understanding you can’t reliably make a clone from a clone, which is why, when Jango’s DNA was too old (along with other factors), they used regular people instead of taking DNA from a clone and using it for a new template

Okay can I say something about the writing for the Clone Wars? It starts off light hearted (for a show about a war), aimed at kids. Brash Ahsoka, big bro jockish Anakin, put upon Obi-Wan, nice guy rulebooker Rex, ect. Tropey, easy to digest. Nothing really there to think about. It's Star Wars, engaging, colorful, ect. That's the hook. The Ryloth arch turns into something different. Something darker. As the show (and war) goes on we see the characters develop. Ahsoka slowly starts to question the moral high ground of the Jedi, Anakin giving into his impulses (love the foreshadowing with Vader's theme), Rex realizing it's better to be a good man than a perfect soldier. And the subject matter is darker, more sinister. Almost as if the show grew with its target audience. The brilliance in the writing, the musical score; the Clone Wars writing team understood it had two audience bases: the target TVY7 age group (so I think 7 - 13 yr olds), and the adult Star Wars fans. They had to keep both engaged. And I think it's so well done.
