We just used this for the first time this weekend while car camping. Steaks on the grill on Saturday night went well. But we tried to cook eggs on it as shown in the video at 0:35 and that doesn’t actually work. It should have occurred to me, but the ‘griddle’ plate doesn’t work if the coals are in the base of the cast iron. It cuts the charcoal off from oxygen. So you could maybe get away with cooking one or two eggs before the heat is totally gone. We tried to cook 5 eggs with some chopped up veggies and had to lift the griddle to re-heat the fire halfway through. It takes a while to reignite nearly dead charcoal. Then we had to use the holder to hold the plate an inch above the coals while stirring the eggs to get them cooked. The griddle plate is steel, with black paint on it. The eggs started peeling the black paint right off. The rest of this product seems to work well but they should not use a coating on a ‘griddle’ the peels off on eggs while using a plastic spatula. Gross. I try not to use cheap teflon because of this, I’m certainly not going to eat some cheap Chinese paint. The Barbones website puts the instructions for use on a separate page than the sales page, and they show the griddle being used without the cast iron bowl, which makes sense. Use the fire plate and the griddle plate together and you could theoretically have great heat. But after seeing the paint fall off during a single easy use, I’d not use it for anything but baking or steaming. The hard to find instructions do not recommend it being used as shown in the video. Why would the video show you to cook eggs using a method that plainly doesn’t work? Probably a disconnect between the creative team and the marketing/video team.

Thanks for sharing. I was on the fence about buying this. Seems pretty versatile for camping, but ultimately paint peeling off into my food is a hard pass

I feel bad for the company that they simply aren't pointing out the obvious to you. You have to pre-heat the coals to red hot. Then the ambient heat is so high it doesn't need any oxygen at all. The griddle is to be used intermittently, after the base is at high heat.
Homeboy barehanded that lid. Yikes!
Just got ours .. very heavy duty ... can’t wait to use
Just ordered mine through Huckleberry….probably wouldn’t have bought it at regular price but the current sale price right now is doable. Can’t wait to break this out camping in the next couple weeks!

it has no real air flow, so you can get the same effect by digging a hole and dumping hot coals in it then placing inserts and a dome lid or clay pot over it. For the price I can get a Weber Master Touch on sale or 2 basic Weber Kettle grills.
I too would love to review this product.
I wish y'all had more videos
It looks a little flimsy but I think the reason it is to keep it light weight. It certainly is flexible.

It's actually not flimsy at all, and not super light. Works great!
