The cold weather adds a new dimension to your dairy farm. It is presently around -21° C around Calgary, Alberta which is about the same as -7° F. Coming from Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, they used to close the outdoor rinks at -10° F. That meant that we had the rink all to ourselves. We did not notice the cold when we were young. Thank you for sharing your typical day. The twin calves are sure cute. 😊

We had an old coal burning furnace in our house. Whenever we had a calf born in the coldest parts of the winter, dad would bring the calf into the house and lay it on a nest of old towels and blankets next to the furnace to keep it warm. Many nights we as little kids would spend the night with the calf to keep it company. One of the great memories of our little dairy farm in Michigan's Thumb.

Has Mr. Kevin ever considered building a cab for his tractors that do not have one. At least keep you dry while working in nasty conditions. Wouldn't tarps hanging from top of opening where you have cut up hay/corn cut down on moisture (rain/snow) messing up where it is stored. Could hang weights on bottom of tarps to stop wind from blowing it open. Any help is better than no help to keep feed usable at it's best. I am not a farmer (city boy) who does a lot of thinking outside the box. All the work that all of you put in to feed your cows, from planting to harvest, to making it edible is a major process and hoping weather conditions don't mess up the life span of the feed. The milk I drink from the grocery store is due to all of your hard work and I Thank You for that. By the way,my Dad grew up on a farm, did farming behind a plow with mule, I might have a wee bit of farming in my blood.

The daily feeding tractor has a cab, but the one used less often doesn't. The open tractor may be used to fit in under low places where a cab unit just can't go. I'm sure they have what they need for the tasks they have to do. Great observation 👍

Hi Ronda, Very interesting. Please tell Kevin it was great to see such detailed goings on. Now, WEATHER ADVISORY: We have a *BOMB CYCLONE headed our way along with an *A POLAR VORTEX following right behind it. Bomb means a barometric pressure drop of 24 millibars in 24hrs. Polar Vortex means it's going to be Arctic cold, as in below 0°F or lower. Blizzard conditions are supposed to start Friday AM with 55mph winds drifting the snow and plunging the wind-chill temps below -70°F. As the storm passes, it will move to the North and create "Wrap-Around" bringing Lake Effect snow for Sunday. Grand Rapids is expected to receive 12" of snow from the Bomb Cyclone, then another 10" from the Lake Effect. So, tell the guys to sharpen up the blades on the snow removal equipment, check the oil and filler up with gas. You might want to get in some extra milk eggs and bread for the possibility of an extended stay-at-home. Just kidding, you have all of that "on the hoof." Ha Ha. Just batten down the hatches, lower all the curtains and close the doors, winter's coming. You might want to video the storm, Max Velocity (youtube) says it's going to be the biggest storm of 2024. OK, here's wishing you a good outcome from the storm. ben/ michigan *That's the extent of my meteorological vocabulary.
