2013 actually, the one prior to 2013 was the iconic ”double gong” sound that first appeared in 1999 (the “double gong” was originally slower however).

They removed it after Dieselgate. The executives felt that calling themselves “Das Auto” or “The Car” would be seen as arrogant and that they needed to rebuild the public’s trust. The case study is covered in universities.
