It would have helped to have more "non-harmonics driven" testing, most importantly for the cross-over testing, which is meant for regular playing and not loosing low end definition.

I can't even play harmonics on bass and that's all this guy is doing.
Chorus is 2 signals laid on top of each other: the effect and the dry. The effect is slightly off key and has varying frequencies and amplitudes (rates and depths). If you ever tune a bass you know that the low e or b string require much less rotation of the peg to reach the right note. In addition, its much larger to distinguish between two notes a half step apart in the low register (something players use to their advantage). People don't want chorus on the low register because on the E/B string it requires much less of a frequency gap to change a note and typically is the root for the pitch of the entire band

Perfect explanation my friend!
When the two amps are going with the Boss pedal it sounds so beautiful. Love it!

Wow these comments are fun over great lengths of time 😸 Again this is subjective, both are truly great units however I would say that the Boss is sharper or cleaner sounding and when mixed over a dry signal sounds more dramatic than a stereo effect to my ears; however given the ability to own both haha well yeah!! MxR flanger with a more chewy sounding chorus that could double on guitar or keys as well- it’s stereo duh! I would honestly start with the Boss but everyone has their own style and tones to chase. ✌️
Captain: 'Does it just sound like the MXR has a little bit more low frequency?' - Or could it be that you just set the bass EQ to 2-o'clock???
Much preferred the boss, classic sound.

I agree it has that 80's sound.
I would have never expected to prefer the Boss, but it sounded much better to me.
Nathan played more harmonics in this video than I've ever played in my life. And I'm old.
Can you do an episode about the Rickenbacker 4003 and 4004

I have owned the Boss before, now I have the MXR Deluxe Chorus and I love it more 👌🏿 Greetings from Uganda 🇺🇬👊🏿🖤
Cool review! Been using the Boss for a few years now and am happy with it. Not gonna let go of it even when I'm getting the MXR. They each have their own character.
WOW!! You just guessed my next buy, and compared the two chorus pedals I wasn't sure which one to buy! The boss sounded better to me, and in stereo it is AMAZING.
I find that crossover control on a bass pedal, especially one like a chorus where several pitch and time modulated-signals are layered, allows the low notes to have overall clarity. Low-frequencies have the tendency to become muddy when played polyphonically and a chorus is an inherently polyphonic effect.
I'd like a little more then just harmonics from time to time
Great review and comparison! But there's an internal switch that selects TRS Stereo Hardwire bypass. Not sure if the gentlemen activated it or not which is why the MXR doesn't sound like it's in stereo compared to the CEB-3.
Lovin' these Bass videos! Thank you & great review.
I love my UK brethern and I enjoy listening to them discuss & analyze. It reminds me of Nigel & David (in a very good way) reviewing pedals & giving their two cents on each function, how it works & how it sounds. I just purchased the MXR Bass Chorus Deluxe - thank you. Cheers!
Usually one would turn down the rate when using flanger...
I disagree with most of the comments here. MXR all the way for me. You gotta spend more time tweaking the EQ. Also, they didn't get the sweetest flanger setting here. The owner's manual has some sample settings that are really fantastic. However, the really old Boss Bass chorus that was made in Japan...those were by far and without question the BEST bass chorus pedals ever made. I recall there was a separate flanger pedal and an eq too. Those were some of the earliest "bass specific" pedals I ever saw on the market and maybe still some of the best.
imagine playing a bass with chorus and not playing new order/joy division bass riffs

I don’t understand the question
Pretty sure the MXR has a trs out that you can set up with a splitter cable to do stereo if you want stereo out
Wow the Boss stereo mode sounds great! Now I know how to use this pedal :)
yes! theese bass episodes are getting much better every time. Keep up with the good work with the pedals, maybe you could throw in some new basses and brands? One thing is just missing that nobody has done in my opinion is how to route a amp rig in the fx loop and get more in to why you should or not should do that. I have been playing bass and guitar for like 20years but never got in to that, it would be very interesting! Cheers from Finland!

So what does it sound like if you plug a guitar into these? Just wondering.
When I play, one advantage of the crossover is that lower notes aren’t super muddy also lower notes don’t get louder than the higher notes and the original signal.
omg the stereo sounds so good, great job man
I've owned both, Boss. The MXR is nice don't get me wrong, the flanger is a nice touch too but the Boss just has that classic Chorus character and I might add, can be heard better than the MXR on my worship bands monitors.

Is it common for a worship band to have chorus on the bass? I'm a Christian and I can never hear the freaking bass in Christian music.
Didnt realize until now how much early Mark King used Chorus.. AWESOME Cheers M8's
Wearing big headphones just to appreciate Nate's stereo.
I have both. Over the years I've always come back to the Boss CEB but the MXR has a nice suttle sound. My small pedalboard has the Boss and my big board has the MXR.
the MXR seems to hold the bass much better, the Boss is fine if you want that particular sound. I would pick the MXR.
Yea like that! Great pedals great sounds! Nice work :-)
As illustrated in the demo, when playing the Boss in true stereo, you want effect level at its maximum, otherwise you're panning the stereo image towards the dry channel. In a more general wet-dry setup, without true stereo imaging, you can do as you like.
I've always had a "pfft" attitude towards stereo effects; I never really saw the big hoopla about them, but this video has changed that part of me… forever.
Question about the "dry signal." I'm assuming if you had other pedals in front of this on the "dry signal" would include the signal from those pedals?
@piratewhoisquiet
4 жыл бұрын
Yes, yes it would.
In answer to why a seperate low frequency control is useful: from messing with an inherited guitar chorus pedal on a bass, I found that it would kill the low end of fundamentals of some notes... although this could have been because that pedal had a a knob for delay between clean and dry signal...
Could you do a comparison video with preamp DI pedals? Maybe Aguilar Tone Hammer, Ampeg SCR DI and EBS Micro Bass? =)

Dark glass B7k Ultra and MXR M80 as well please 👍🏼
Which one for duff mckagan?
Could you maybe do the same with octave pedals? Great vid btw!
considering I normally don't like Boss equipment, the Boss in this instant does the business.... ! as much as I love MXR, have to begrudgingly admit that, that Affected Effect the Boss gives, is what is needed for Bass Chorus and gives that Dave Pegg type sound.

Review on Ampeg effect pedals too
You should do a similar one where you compare the octavers from mer and boss!
Both pedals work well with bass. Boss sounds so 80's and the MXR is very modern.
The comparison you did is great as usual. For me the Stereo worked better at the Boss pedal with earphones. 🌈
Im guessing that that bass is an Ibanez SR375E?
some bass compressor and eq pedal reviews would be awesome :-)
What bass guitar is he using?
Not that it should matter but the mxr is analog and the boss ceb-3 has been digital for years, the early ones were analog but for the last 15 years or so they are digital

nephilymbass Absolutely right
I bought the CEB-3 back when I was getting started on bass. Having been playing for about a decade now I still have this pedal which certainly says something for the durability of the pedal. Although if I were buying a chorus pedal today I would buy just about anything other than this pedal. Just not all that happy with the way it sounds anymore....
YES, chorus with dry signal - thank you!!!
@Farewelltokingz

All chorus uses dry signal
Hum, the MXR in "stereo" mode doesn't sound stereo at all, whereas the CEB-3 is perfect for that matter. I liked both, I would have loved to hear the CEB-3 with the highest possible Depth and lowest possible Rate, in order to hear some flanger-ish effect. Cheers :)
The Boss sounded better to me. There is something about the top end of the MXR I don't like. I just sold mine and bought the new EBS.
Why is it with chorus pedals everyone wants to just play harmonics?
I'm surprised there are so many comments from people who prefer the Boss- the MXR sounds vastly better to me. To me, the Boss sounds cheap. I do of course appreciate it's just a matter of preference! Each to their own.

I agree, the MXR sound full and warm. The Boss sounds cheezy except when it's in Stereo.
Can you do the Dunlop cry baby bass vs the Dunlop cry baby bass mini.
Cap'n and Nathan make a great combo. Love how Nathan is always drinking (what I assume is) tea.
Cheeky bit of jaco there at the start, lovely
I have the MXR, and I just got a Source Audio Gemini Chorus, and it is so much better. The MXR has a fixed crossover frequency, and when you press it, it adds a ton of bass EQ to the signal, overpowering the chorus effect. The effect is also too subtle no matter how the knobs are set. The Gemini has so many controls you can change if you wanted to. It has a completely variable crossover setting, parametric bass mid and treble controls, multiple chorus phaser and flanger effects you can choose from, I can't even begin to describe its versatility. You have to check it out! It sounds so much better!
Which one is best to get a Duff tone?
@Farewelltokingz

3 years late, but I've found that the best chorus to get that Duff Mckagan 1992 live chorus sound is the Boss CE-2W on the "Ce-1" setting. It's perfect in every way.
Nathan sure likes his harmonics :P

I'd still go with the MXR. I love the Bass flanger sounds from Forty Six and Two (though I believe he used a Boss pedal), and the bass chorus DLX has a more straight forward, practical layout compared to the Boss. You can go from "Would?" to Tool instantly.

@andertons precision vs jazz bass
I Use the MXR bass Chorus for my guitar. It really works well! Cheers guys!
Unfortunately, the bass player's apparent love for Jaco really gets in the way of any objective review of either pedal. You can't demonstrate how the crossover on the MXR works when just playing harmonics.
Which is better for duff mckagan?

CEB-3 or even better, the CE-2W on the CE-1 mode.
Harmonics are cool, but would be nice to hear the chorus on these pedal with actual bass lines. This video did nothing for me in deciphering which pedal I prefer.
Are these pedals digital?

crguti MXR is analog and BOSS is digital.
That dude's good.
J&D Brothers Bass Guitars anyone? Anyone heard of them? Opinions?
Bass chorus? Why not all the hundreds of basses out there from various manufacturers?
Just convinced me to go for the MXR. Much richer.
What is Matt Bellamy doing here?
Boss sounded more dramatic. I think the MXR seemed a little bit more mid range and might sit better in a mix.
Anything that affects the bottom end, can rapidly lose the bottom end in the sound, in a band/full mix situation. 90% of the time, a Bass player, regardless of wether its distortion, chorus or whatever, will always want an unaffected bass frequency to stick with the kick and support the overall sound of the band.

Boss for the win. wider, wetter and fatter. *Giggety*
Oh Capitan... Crank up the bass in MXR and hearing more bottom end... ;]
can you guys do another gigging under 500£ video for just bass players and also drummers not getting alot of love on here
One side all dry and one side all wet is how Boss designed the chorus on their famous JC amps.
Trying to find a replacement for my old CE-1 as I am retiring it.. boss wins this one.
Can't wrap my head around why MXR would make a stereo pedal and put only one output jack. How many companies actually do that? Any? So now you need a y adapter and also separate adapters (1/4 to 1/4 male/female) for both cables? If so, what a mess and added expense. That alone points me towards the boss seeing they both sound really good. Hate that blue with a passion, but oh well.
Both chorus pedals sound metallic.
Would be helpful to play fretted motes more rather than harmonics all the time
Both are fine pedals and it depends on your tastes (and set up!) but,..if you need Flanger & Chorus perhaps,..then the MXR version is for you. (Save Pedalboard space huh!?) The Boss is best if you just need a Chorus with the option of having a dry output as well..(Bi-Amped!) IMO tho’..the MXR DIDN’T sound “STEREO-like” to me and I monitored by Headphones!!🎧))) You’ve gotta retry out the Boss Chorus Bi-Amped to “feel” the Earth move via that Modulation!! 🤣Whew Hoo‼️
i perfer the sound of the boss over the mxr the mxr seems to thin the sound a bit

How about a demo with NO harmonics and just straight playing to get a no-nonsense sound?
boss is winner
Chorus on guitar (when it's noticeable) is an abomination. Chorus on bass is delicious.
the boss wins by a mile. Please Andertons get some Warwick basses!
Nice playing :) But the idea abuit the low filter knob is to not loose the attack of the tone!? And you should cut your nails :)
It would´ve been even better if you played with a pick though.
This was a great demo for guitarist, if u like real bass this aint for u.
dude battery dead in the clock
I think Boss sound better/ less soft and wooly. Mxr sounds old fashion and like guita chorus. Its all about the attack. Difficult to heat properly, some slap tones would sort out the difference! more
Mostly playing harmonics doesn't give a good demo.
This is more of a review video than a demo
Why is he playing flageolet tones nearly all the time?? And chords??? Is he even a bass player?? Would have been nice to hear some typical "bass" lines. But a good video though.
muting the vocal parts is no helpful during the playing/testing parts
Horrible reviewers
