All About Soya Beans/How We Plan & Prepared for this Year's Crop: Soya Bean Farming Basics: Part 1

Soya bean is described as "the most economically important bean in the world".
This is Part 1 of our series of videos about our soya beans crop for the 2022/23 season.
We start off with an introduction to this amazing crop and how it forms the backbone of global food supply. We describe why farmers like ourselves choose to grow soya beans for its financial returns as well as its soil building properties as a legume.
Finally, the video shares how we planned the expansion of the number and size of fields allocated to soya beans this season, then how we cleared the land and prepared the fields.

    Hi Lionel, Thanks for your question. Honestly, we planted groundnuts as shown in the video back in 2021, and we haven't touched them since. I can't remember the variety and I would have to go look in our records. Sorry, things are hectic for me with now operating two busy farms and other pressures in my day job. I hope you will be able to freeze the video when I show the crop poster and see what you make out. That being said, I have no idea what the groundnut prices are like. But I'm sure you can do some googling or contacting those who are closer to the product to find out.

    Hi there. As our farms are full-time businesses, we restrict the number and frequency of visitors. It has been found to be a challenge for us to meet our work targets and deliverables. We produce these videos to open and share our experience and guidance with a wide audience. We also started to hold Farmers Field Days last year and are working on a couple later this year. These will be publicized our social media closer to the time. For now, that is all we can offer.

    Do you get uninvited baboons and monkeys at your farm?

  • @mondofarms4343

    @mondofarms4343

    10 ай бұрын

    I remember having a few monkeys back in 2020, but they have since moved down the Chongwe River valley further into less inhabited areas. If you look up the location of Winterthorn on Google Maps, you will note that it is located on the Chongwe River a few Kms downstream of Chongwe Town. You will also note that the Chongwe flows south east from us and down towards the Zambezi. The confluence of the two rivers is located in the Lower Zambezi National Park, where the animals are protected and much safer. Sadly, our growing population and urbanization keep displacing wildlife. Human-animal conflict is a major thing.

  • @mondofarms4343

    Yes, indeed, the current price is much less than one would hope for. We invested a lot into our soya beans crop this season. Fortunately, our larger yield gives us a better chance. We are also going to keep some of the harvest as seed for next season rather than sell it at these prices, and then have to buy seed again at the supplier prices. But that is farming. It is never easy.
