Imperial Knowledge Please do some videos about the “animals” of Tamriel. This topic is easy and would be extremely interesting to me and many others. Lots of the animals throughout all elder scrolls games have really interesting lore and or quests that I think would make a great video if you talked about it. 🦀 mudcrabs, imps, deer, hell even sheep, and trolls. Please consider these topics.

I once killed Sapphire, i was kinda surprised that no one at Bee and Barb cared at all Whatever As a Conjuration master, i reanimated her and went to Soltsheim with her just to see her father, Glover Mallory I got inside his house and had her killed again, only to reanimate her again Yeah, that wouldn't have been cool... It would've been amazing if the game had special dialogues for this weird situation tho'

Playing as a Dunmer necromancer, and found an interesting book about Dunemeri use of Necromancy in Morrowind. The book's called "Dunmer and Ancestors" and it basically describes the necromantic culture of the Dunmer, like using their ancestor's ghost to guard their homes and offer guidance, or enslaving the souls of those that have wronged them.

Morality is subjective, Magic, regardless of the school can be used to do “good” or “evil” destruction can slay bloodthirsty warlords, or it can burn down villages, illusion can force a rapist to cower in fear of his victim, or it can make a person lose their sense of reality and experience a fate worse than death, alteration can can turn lead into gold, and that very same gold can be used to purchase slaves or bribe government officials, restoration can heal wounds, or perhaps with sufficient knowledge of restoration, someone may learn how to inflict greater harm to the body, and conjuration may be used to create an army of undead slaves, or to reanimate a bandit who goes on to kill the other bandits in his former gang. Magic is magic, it’s not good or evil, it all depends on how it and the knowledge of it is used and studied.

@DomusDulcisDomus yeah, because that’s my perspective on good and bad uses of it, but what’s good from my POV isn’t necessarily good from another POV, generally most people agree that killing is bad, but is it ok to kill some people if they deserve it? What did they do to deserve it? Or is killing bad no matter what? Just like in a fantasy world the same argument can be made for necromancy, is it always bad, or would it be more utilitarian to allow the free study of it with some limitations like on any other magical school and even so some would argue that magic itself is bad, there’s no right or wrong, there’s no way to definitively end the argument. There are no rules there is no universal moral compass, we exist in this world for no particular reason, and we make things up as we go along as best as we can forming our own opinions from our experiences.

  • @commissar_leon1613

@DomusDulcisDomus I don’t see how that refutes my argument though, my own moral bias just proves my point that my own bias can conflict with the bias of another person who came to a different conclusion so in the end morality is a man made concept, that doesn’t make it good or bad, it’s just part of being human, much like how flying is part of being a bird, humans who have consciousness and self awareness can sit down, ponder existence and what is good or bad. We came up with it, just because we can.

@@commissar_leon1613 you don't have to define things as good or bad, that isn't part of being human, it's just an easy way for us to describe things. Just saying something is "good" or "bad" inspires you to not think too much about it and use your own bias to fill in the blanks by what they are saying, so in other words it doesn't really exist. There are just things that people will do that benefits themselves or others, or things that hurt themselves or others. Things you like, and not like. One of my most well-intentioned characters was a necromancer. He tended only to raise from death hose who have trespassed against him or others for significant periods of time, as a legion of the damned. The plan being to make them serve Tamriel for a period to pay off their debts. He also had a habit of temporarily raising people's victims for karmic retribution, and allying himself with more "thought-capable" undead, like the unfortunate prisoners of the Soul Cairn. By contrast, my most wicked character was an archer who basically acted as a domestic terrorist, mostly but not solely, in Imperial holdings, and eventually a serial killer for the Dark Brotherhood.

Necromancy is basically enslavement of the soul. If you're okay with physical slavery then sure, necromancy is okay. Mos people aren't okay with slavery, though. So there you have it. The reason why King Olaf appears in Sovngarde is probably just an oversight on Bethesda's part. They wanted to make him appear in Sovngarde, yet didn't for whatever reason make a script to check whether you have destroyed his draugr form or not. There's also the controversy that he shouldn't be in Sovngarde at all since he wasn't an honourable nord and he used unfair tricks to win battles and gain power. Depends on who you believe, so who knows.

For me, the case of Olaf is simple - he's been dead so long that his soul is now completely removed from his body - so the body you fight is like a robot you repair, then format the HDD before installing a new O.S. I'd theorise that until they gain entry to their afterlife (Like passing Tsun's test) then their soul is still connected to their body. Whereas once they have entered the afterlife then their body is an empty vessel for you to insert your own pseudo-soul to control the body (Would help partially explain why some are still connected to their body for longer than others). I'd say the morals of it being o.k to take control of someone who's soul is no longer connected to their body, although it'd be tactless to do it in front of the body's loved ones :C But the real issue would be whether Bethesda will ever clarify the canon of it :S

I think the reason that you weren't able to harm ghosts with normal weapons in games before Skyrim was because they were taking some inspiration from D&D rules, in D&D, some monsters such as ghosts and werewolves can only be harmed by spells, magical weapons, or in the case of werewolves, weapons coated with silver. Elder Scrolls originated out of the developer's D&D 3.5e games back when they were making Arena and Daggerfall. When it came time to make Skyrim, I think they had simply forgotten the origins of this and just decided that they wouldn't want to annoy players by having enemies that can't be attacked.

Nothing wrong with that right? Only thing that’s gonna come up is maybe a smell as he decays but nobody else is gonna complain, vs if I take that same brute, give him the same chores, but dominate his mind and his will rather than just kill him and reanimate his flesh? If given the option in his position I’ll take being reanimated personally

Necromancy is always interesting to me in the games. Because I always think back to a bit in the in game book "The Black Arts on Trial". Where someone accused of being a necromancer points out that "To most people Necromancer just means an evil mage". It's... interesting. And something that I think the games get muddled about based on how they want to treat it at the time. Like in Daggerfall a Necromancer's coven was a major political player in the Illiac Bay. Everyone knew about them. No one was on crusade to wipe them out. In fact they directly make deals with them and accept them as dangerous and useful figures. Much like they do any other power block in the region. Of course in Morrowind Necromancy becomes illegal as a cultural taboo that... base game isn't really explored very well about why the guards will freak out over some "Summon Ghost" spell you cast but not "Summon Ancestral Ghost" Racial Power you might use. There's a lot of fan back fill I find to try to square that up and expand on it. Then in Oblivion because Morrowind was such a huge hit (I swear some people think Morrowind was some niche cult classic at times, forgetting it was a huge seller that dominated its genre and was on most reviewer's top 10 list for the year, etc), they decided to keep up the thing against Necromancy with the Mage's Guild. Which is kind of funny because they point out in the Mage's Guild (and some other quests) just how much of an ass the crusade against Necromancy actually is, and how daft and out of touch the Mage's Guild are. For example there's a Necromancer Coven behind the Roxy Inn on the road around Lake Rumare. You're sent to kill them and they are hostile. But you broke into their home. They actually weren't doing anything other than "I heard there were necromancers there!". The Necromancers are attacking people during hte Mage's Guild Questline... because Traven had started hunting them down and sending out the Knights of the Lamp and Mage's Guild Associates to kill them on sight. Enough aggression to cause Mannimarco to come back to try to stop it from his godhood state at the end of Daggerfall. And of course in the Thieves' Guild we see that while the Mage's Guild is rambling on about how Necromancy is evil... they seemingly have no problems summoning up Daedra, during an active daedric invasion of Tamriel. Which strikes me as a far worse idea, particularly as we see in several times across multiple games (and books in games for second hand accounts)... summoned Daedra don't necessarily respect orders. And of course in Skyrim they went back to the Daggerfall style. While some people will profess not to like Necromancy (The Court Mage in Winterhold says he never has, and the College banned it centuries ago, in response to rumors about him doing Necromancy as a negative)... they also don't care if I walk down the street with my zombified buddy. And oddly (I noticed), the various Bounties and things like Radiant Quests never really send you to clear out Necromancers unlike Bandits, Falmer, Trolls, etc. So while some may say it was a gameplay concern: "We don't want Necromancer players to feel persecuted" or something... I'm not sure that was the case. There's just enough there to say that Nords just kind of... don't care for the most part. Not unless someone is doing something else they find distasteful as well. And then in ESO of course Necromancy is a crime everywhere if someone sees you doing it again like Morrowind because... Morrowind Nostalgia I think. Honestly I'd think that it wouldn't be Necromancy everyone would naturally react poorly to then, but Daedric Summoning instead. You had the Longhouse Emperors trying to push Daedric Worship causing a civil war. You had the invasion by Molag Bal going on. You'd think in the end... Well this is something I remember from Dragonlance's novels. The second in the Twins trilogy if I remember. They go to a harsh time where Krynn is basically on its knees and about to die out entirely. Famine and plagues everywhere, the Gods had apocalypsed the city of Ishtar and the center of the world government, causing all that devastation going on. And they have Raistlin mention about how in this time it's almost ironic that a Black Robed Wizard (Literally a wizard dedicated to evil, and everyone knows it, it is open, common knowledge) was more accepted by the populace than a White Robed Cleric (A priestess literally devoted to good and with equivalent powers through the service to the gods). Everyone was willing to throw in with his war mongering plans and treated the white robed cleric like she was this horrible witch that only survived being stoned to death because Raistlin personally protected her. And you'd think in a time like when ESO's comes off... a Black Robed Necromancer would be more welcome than a daedric worshiping sorcerer. But... they do the opposite. Again I think because Nostalgia. Though one might argue that Mannimarco being a Necromancer as a big villain would explain it... no one really knows in ESO that he's a villain outside of the Vestige and Superfriends.

I don't mind necromancy and I like to use it a lot. Necromancy as a morbid art definitely attracts a lot of evil, morally unhinged people, but it doesn't mean it can't be used for good things. I don't care for suffering of all of those bandits who I reanimated as undead to fight for me, neither any enemy who tried to attack me. They deserve it anyway. Besides, I doubt that a soul of a thousand year old skeleton would really feel anything if their skeleton is being used by a necromancer considering what I heard in this video about soul's grip on their corps decreases over years.

from what I can tell, raising zombies and skeletons just binds a daedra to the corpse to puppet it for the necromancer, while raising an incorporeal undead like a ghost binds the deceased soul to the necromancers will... not sure about draugr... So Id say zombies and skeletons arent inherently evil but binding unwilling spirits is inherently evil.

4:16 There's actually 3. You forgot about Selveni Netri, located in Southfringe Sanctum. Technically, she's coded as combat conjurer, but if asked if she's a necromancer, she responds, "I am, and I don't want to hear your moral judgments about it, either. I wouldn't have had to study in secret in the old days." I would also count Serana as a necromancer, but I assume you're only referring to the base game without dlcs.

You also have Sibyl Stentor (court mage in Solitude) who is a friendly vampire and thus a necromancer. Nocturnal might also be considered a necromancer as she uses the souls of the dead Nightingales as guardians, although she's a Deadric Prince so, might not count as she isn't, or ever was, mortal.

My favorite characters I play have all been necromancers. I wish we still had the Necromancer's Moon ritual tables in Skyrim as they had in Oblivion, but alas I shall worship my God of Worms by doing what I do best... raise powerful undead and wish that Serana would find something better than a skeever to raise.

It's funny how you mention that it seems most evil characters that people make are necromancers, but my current evil character is not a necromancer, but a warlock who summons daedra as minions instead. That's not to say he can't reanimate something if he for some reason needed to, but he finds the conjuring of daedra to be much more efficient and makes pacts to summon all kinds of them and worships the daedra lords that provide the strongest daedra, like Mehrunes Dagon, Molag Bal, and Sheogorath. I'm using the Daedric Entity Restoration Project, so he started with Flame Atronachs and Hernes, currently prefers daedroths and Knights of Order or Aurorans at the level he's currently at, and will of course eventually upgrade to dremora and storm atronachs at expert level and then later golden saints and xivillai at master level. There would be an interesting video topic too, if it hasn't been done already. We've covered the necromancers, but what about daedra summoners and daedra worshippers? They were never viewed in a particularly good light, but they have got to be having tough times convincing anybody that what they are doing is morally okay after the Oblivion Crisis. That or a video about the lesser daedra, as they don't seem to get as much attention as the princes in lore videos.

I've only played Skyrim so far & I find the thought of tormenting the dead repulsive; also unnecessary seeing how the game is quite easy even at legendary setting. I do however trap black souls (I believe that falls within the definition of necromancy?), but only those of other necromacers & Thalmor scum lol.

My opinion, it’s a necessity for the advancement of magic, but it’s not a pleasant experience for the experiment subjects

I’m fairly certain the predominant culture of every race (with the obvious exception of the Sload) would view necromancy as an abhorrent practice. Burial rites are central to a society’s ability to process death, receive closure, and mourn properly. It’s difficult to imagine the defilement and desecration of the dead as anything other than taboo. Necromancy is practiced almost wholly in secret by those outcast mages and witches that operate outside of societal norms in covens or cults. In ESO, Necromantic magic is grouped together with Vampiric magic as a criminal act in every city, and casting it in town brings the guards down upon your head. Every race has necromancers, as the King of Worms has spread his influence all over Tamriel, but it is the ultimate Black Magic, the ultimate rebellion against life.
