Rebecca Gardea, has been an owner and breeder of Weimaraners, for the past seventeen years. As a pet owner Rebecca and her Weims have a full life, from field training to AKC Confirmation events, Rebecca is insuring that her dogs have form and function.
The Weimaraner, Germany’s sleek and swift “Gray Ghost,” is beloved by hunters and pet owners alike for their friendliness, obedience, and beauty. They enjoy exercise, and plenty of it, along with lots of quality time with their humans.
The first thing to know about the Weimaraner is that he's a housedog. He's not meant for kennel or backyard life, and he's also not suited to apartment living. This highly active dog needs a large, securely fenced yard where he can run, and an active family who can provide him with the exercise and mental stimulation he needs. A sense of humor helps as well, especially when you see how your Weim has relandscaped your yard in his efforts to rid it of mice, moles, and bugs. He'll be proud of himself for his good efforts, so don't forget to praise him as you calculate in your head how much time, money, and effort it will require to put the yard back the way you like it. You might want to supervise him more closely and provide him with additional exercise. Weimaraners need a couple of hours of exercise daily if you want to prevent recreational barking, chewing and digging.

Believe it or not, I've had 3 weimies over the past 20 years and they were/are the most laid back dogs who just want to be touching me at ALL TIMES!! They are definitely 'shadow' dogs. I adore this breed! I've been fortunate enough to rescue all of them and have been rewarded with incredibly special fur babies!

@@DorkVader26 So true! They can outwit you if you're not on your toes! My first two were females but I currently have a little boy (well, not really little...90 lbs) and he can be bossy! If I don't jump to quick enough with his food, he lets me know about it! Lol He can be very stubborn so, like you said, I have to get firm and remind him I'm his alpha. But, generally, he is incredibly sweet and absolutely loves to be with his family. And, he's quite the snuggler!

BS. I've had 2 Weims, and they were the best dogs I've ever owned. Full time job for both me & wife, and they weren't destructive, bored, etc..It's all in how you raise your dogs. Most dogs take on the personalities of their owners.

@james crowe Jim, that's why some people shouldn't share their lives with dogs. They think it's just an add on to go with their kids, but they don't have a clue on how to raise them, let alone their kids! That's why I prefer dogs over children!

My weimaraner just passed away on October 1st, 2018. 21 days before his 14th birthday. And all I can say is that he was the best dog I ever had. So, everything in this video seems true from my perspective. If you're looking for a breed, this is the one.

These are such high energy dogs and you need to be able to exercise them for hours everyday, which is why IMO they shouldn’t be sold in pet stores. Uneducated people will see a cute little silver Weimaraner puppy, and adopt it, not knowing how much time and effort they will need to put into the dog. And later on, the dog will be too hyper to handle, and will eventually end up in a shelter.

After working in a doggie day care with several full bred Weims, I can share my take on their personality. They are bred to have intense separation anxiety. When left for short periods away from others dogs or owners weims so nuts. Some have injured themselves in a manic state when put in any type of isolation. They are extremely smart dogs, but have a knack for being too smart for their own good. They are a common breed to let out other dogs from play rooms and figure out ways to get what they want. They are extremely loving and loyal pups. Despite being pretty crazy when it comes to isolation, Weims are beautiful and excellent family dogs. If someone wants a working dog like a weim or vizula, etc. they need to understand that they have HIGH energy levels and absolutely need ways to work out that energy or they absolutely will become bored and destructive. Overall the breed is quirky, extremely loyal, and very loving.

i have one that is a complet nut case. sounds like murder even if u just step out for 5 sec to have a smoke he needs to be there with you. i try and make use of the time and kick the ball for him to grab and bring back seems to run some of his energy out. nicest dog tho ive ever seen not a mean bone in his body witch is funny cuz everyone who sees him are terrified as hes half pincher and looks very much so at 120 pounds.

I don't have a full bred, he's a rescue so I think he's a mix of weim and heeler or some other cattle dog. When I take him out to train him I will leave him alone in the back of the truck for hours or more at a time or in a warm kennel with hay and I also have a bed cover and toys because he's still a pup. However he usually wants to sleep with me if possible. I work him at least 3-4hrs a day, if not work its playing with him. He sleeps the entire time I kennel him. I think it is because he is comfortable and very very tired. Never had any problems with seperation anxiety or barking, chewing, or mania. If I ever do experience these issues is there any way to appease him? I also do not keep him alone when he's at home, he will be with my German Shepard border collie mix and my brothers corgi but he they will be alone for hours while I work and honestly I wouldn't know

I'm on my 5th weim..... all hunters. Rebecca has hit every nail on the head with this breed. I've had German shorthaired pointers, labs, etc. and by far the weim is the best overall. CAUTION: this breed is HYPER! Everything she says about their energy level is dead on. Love my boys.... and they will do anything to please me. You MUST secure YOUR place as the dominate one though. Once that dominance is set, these dogs will do anything you want them to with excellence. Best breed ever.... period.

My late Weim was a great search and rescue dog. He loved to work. Miss him a lot! I had a house without a yard. However, he ran with me every single morning about 6 - 12 miles. As soon as dawn came, he was up on the bed, staring down at me, telling me it was time to go running. I am an Ironman-distance triathlete and he kept me exercised. Then, he was totally laid back in the house. He could be stubborn. On the refusal to move from his space, she is right on. He would do that. He would grab a spot on the couch and, through some contortion of the space-time continuum, he would increase his mass 20 times. You weren't going to move him. 🤣 He was a good dog.

As a little child I was there for all of the temperament testing on the puppies. These dogs do not tolerate stupid. I regomed 200 hundred of them. Now, they are almost extinct. They are regarded as a dog that has a human mind. That is wrong!

I love my weim! He’s at my side 24/7. We go to the park for at least 1.5 hours to run and play everyday , sometimes 2x a day. He alerts me when a package is delivered at the front door, a bird(s) perching on the fence or when the neighbor cats visit our back yard. He use to dig but has learned I don’t like it. I five him bones to chew on, games to play or a big long with frozen food or treats to keep him busy between walks/ play time.

I'm watching this today because I've been a happy owner of one of these great dogs. My concern was the activity levels. Some times I cant fit more than 15 to a half hour a day of out door time with him. My questions were answered. I'm now ready to start making a lot more time for him, and to let his full energy go towards how he was breed to live. No longer couped up in the house

I got my mother a Weim for her birthday she loves him and he loves her he is a very laid back dog he never chewed on anything or caused her trouble. I decided to get my own because of how well behaved he was, and well that’s not always the case I found that all Weimaraners have different personalities especially my Ivy! She needs lots of exercise so I take her for a run in the morning before work and sometimes when I get home she has no interest in playing with other dogs so I have to improvise, she just wants to be next to me I call her the Velcro pup if she hasn’t had her exercise for the day she can be very needy and will cry and howl for attention. These dogs are really not for everyone they are not the same just because one weim may seem chill doesn’t mean they are all like that. So really think about it when you want one of your own. They’re great dogs with enough exercise and can be great protectors. Some just require more than others. ;) hope this helps anyone looking to get a weim.

Eventually am looking to get a new dog... was doing some research on Basenjis and the Weims. While I do enjoy a big dog, Basenjis do have their perks too (little to no dog odor is unreal, but no barking might be a deal breaker). Right now am leaning towards a Weimaraner, love their ghost coat and their demand for exercise (nothing like a good howl). I'm seeing that they may be a little tricky to train but I suppose it can be done correctly if done early and consistently. We'll see maybe ill just get a designer dog like the goldendoodle.

A S all I can say is do your research and you’ll be good weimaraners need a lot of exercise and I do like that my weim doesn’t smell even when she’s been outside I bring her inside and she does not smell like dog she also doesn’t shed much or at all she’s a great dog when she gets her exercise but if she doesn’t get it she becomes bored easily and will find ways to entertain herself ( which is not always the way we want them to) I wish you luck with your new pup and whatever you decide!

Scary! Pay attention to bloat, as she mentioned in the video. He will have a propensity to stomach issues now. Be careful not to change foods and feed on a schedule. Some dogs are really sick but it's hard to tell. You have to get good at recognizing illness in a stoic dog. Bloat is life threatening. Read up on it. Good luck with your pup!

I foster Senior Weims now, but my first one , Daisy lived to 13 1/2. I rescue because now that I’m 65, I know I can’t handle a puppy plus I do not want to die before my dog. My son said I should get a smaller dog, but once you fall in love with a Weimaraner, and their regal, yet goofy personality, no other will do.

She's right about their protective traits. We have a Weim-GSP We got him at 1.5 yrs old. he was a foster dog that I adopted out, he was quirky but he was not insane like he was when they return them He came back super aggressive at the vet (still has to be sedated for nail trims and I have to vaccinate him with the syringes, LOL). He required a couple levels of obedience to accept people/strangers in his space. We foster dogs, so he runs & plays a lot. He's super skinny despite eating more than our GSD. He's great with new kids, cats, dogs. New People? Not so much (which we like about him), but he made so much progress with tolerating other people from attending GROUP obedience classes (he needed to see people and their dogs). He's always touching me. He can't sleep without having a paw or his snout on me. He has separation anxiety so he has to be crated when we leave the house. He is crated for a full work day which is 9.5 hours (not being able to crate for more than 3 or 4 hours is laughable). his personality is everything that is described in a Weimaraner and everything that is described in a German Shorthaired Pointer. I don't think I will ever have a home without one or the other BUT would love to continue to have mixed a Weim-GSP. I wonder what his parents personalities were like. It's really frustrating when people breed sketchy animals. I don't know if he is sketchy because of nature or nurture.

This woman really knows Weims! I've just inherited two of them. They are lovely but quite different from all the Boxers and Boxer Xs I've had before. One of my Weims is afraid of babies haha! The other one used to be a bit domineering about 'territory' within the house, but we're past that now. They're both trouble with strangers around the house, but completely loving with me. One is good with other dogs, one is not. They have so much energy, but thankfully they're both starting to enter their 'middle years'. They used to run about 25km per day, plus lots of swimming and could reach speeds of >40kph running along the beach.

Cool vid....Ive got a 5 year old weimaraner... Spud, and what a big soft sod he is, and take into account he was a rescue dog.. i got him at 7 month old with all sorts of issues, emaciated, beaten and neglected!!, all sad and i would love to see the same happen to the previous owners but i live in a normal reality. Anyways now he is a true gentleman, so loving with children, brilliant with most people and dogs, does have a bit of an issue with other dogs showing dominant aggressive behaviour towards him.... not one to back down, dogs being dogs an all, never actually hurt another though. I put it down to he has clangers still and his early issues, but usually reacts to his commands. And great way to keep him fit on top of his walks with me is i take him cycling with me. and he absolutely loves it, so do I when I don't want to pedal he does the pulling... lol, took a bit of careful training but they take to it quick being bright, i Love my best friend, issues and all and wouldn't change a thing about him. Definitely would recommend to anyone, they are a lovely, super intelligent breed and most importantly loyal.

Dogumentary TV, Thank you very much for uploading this informative video. I have one question though. Could you (or anybody else who reads this) tell me how Weimaraners were kept in the 1800s? Did they really live in the homes of their owners? Or did they live outside (be it in kennels, in the garden in a dog house and free-roaming, or in the garden, tethered)? Thank you very much in advance for taking the time to answer my question.

Ok even though I’m pretty late, here is my rant I guess. EVERY WIEM IS DIFFERENT. Please take this into consideration of course they are going to have the spurts of energy but training is relatively easy. Weimaraner’s aren’t all the same size. You really need to check and research your breeder. It took months of back ground check on the breeder who we got our wiem from. They don’t all like the same activities as well. You really need to bond with the dog before trying to do something as simple as bathe. We got ours a few months later then desired but regardless be warned that Weimaraner’s are stressful dogs. The reward is so fulfilling seeing them by your side. As for tails I know docked are very controversial. Weimaraner tails have literally broken fingers because there muscles and bones are just so powerful. Ask the breeder how they dock the tails. Don’t buy from a beginner breeder because chances are they don’t know how short they should dock. Always ask before considering to adopt. HOPE THIS HELPED
