Marti Michalis certified dog trainer as well as certified crazy over Bloodhounds, shares her home and her dogs with us. Marti is the proud owner of two pet bloodhounds, Johnny and Miss Dixie. Both dogs, even though they come from opposite sides of the tracks, are excellent examples of the bloodhound breed. Miss Dixie an eleven year old rescue has amazing spirit and confirmation. The young puppy Johnny is coming into his own and has already made several appearances in the AKC show ring.
This breed is famed for its ability to discern human scent over great distances, even days later. Its extraordinarily keen sense of smell is combined with a strong and tenacious tracking instinct, producing the ideal scent hound, and it is used by police and law enforcement all over the world to track escaped prisoners, missing people, lost children and lost pets.

A MESSAGE FROM DOCUMENTARY TELEVISION Hey guys thanks for watching the videos, to those of you who watch every video, double thanks. You all should know that it's my intention to film every dog breed. The order in which I film them is truly dependent on a lot of different factors, some of which are out of my control. I am a single person producing the content for this channel, so if I don't get to your request immediately, its not that your being ignored. Its a monumental task I'm taking on, please be patient and enjoy the videos as they come. Thanks!

I'm a GS guy. I was at the pound(hate that word) and was looking for a second dog that was totally different than my shepherd. There was a 2 yo female full bloodhound. It was love at first slobber...had to bring that dog home. I found that all the leash training used on shepherds means nothing to them. Their life is at the end of their muzzle. However, Tyche(her name) is the funniest dog I've ever seen. I'm thinking of training her to be a standup comedian because of her antics. You should see her make her bed at night before she sleeps. Or her ability to open the frig to get the left over pizza out. When she is watching tv she is totally absorbed. There is more but ya get the picture. I couldn't live without her now.

its been a roller coaster to say the least. she fell really ill and we thought we were going to lose her. she was diagnosed with some form of meningitis. after months of heavy medication she is now in remission. besides that, my experience with her has been challenging but very rewarding. These dogs are not easy to train, they are sensitive, stubborn, dominant, and strong dogs. they grow fast and play rough lol not to mention they take about 2 years to fully mature. right now I've got a 75 pound puppy on my hands.. just imagine what those puppy zoomies look like!! All that aside, they love harder and stronger than any other animal I've ever owned. every headache, wrecked shoe, hole in my garden, and late night vet visit has been worth it. she's the best dog I could've ever asked for. they are a great breed but you will need a lot of patience and time if you plan on getting one of these dogs.

Feed them twice a day, not all at once and make sure they have an elevated place to eat off of, like 12 inches-18 inches tall. They swallow air if they eat too low or too much, and will get bloat and die. Don't ever allow them to get loose by themselves, they will catch a scent and won't stop going after it, sometimes for hours , even walking into traffic. They do not see very well when they are tracking, always walk them on a lead if not in a fence.

So just over three years ago I watched this video either right before or right after I adopted Beauregard (seen to the left). The one thing in particular that you were spot-on about was they will make you laugh every single day. The vocalizations are amazing. The biggest suggestion I might add to your video is if you have a bloodhound have plenty of hand towels or washcloths hidden around your house to wipe slobber off of walls and ceilings. also if your bloodhound is allowed in the kitchen make a habit of putting a lid on every pot. When they do shake their head it is absolutely amazing how far they can sling the drool. My next dog is definitely another bloodhound. Really great dogumentary!

I love the playground equipment shot with your guy running up the steps, Brought back instant memory (and tears) for My old GSD friend Harry who followed me up the neighborhood park slide and also went down on his butt right after me from first try at 9month old when we rescued him. From then on everytime we went over to the playground equipment he would run up the steps like your blood hound and slide down the slide on is butt just like a kid ...he knew I liked it is why he did it more than anything else I believe ...I'd just say "Harry go on the slide?" and he went....man I miss that dog every day...he was one in ten thousand! He was so easy to train and go out get the newspaper or go get practically anything reasonable I pointed to ...if our newspaper had not come? Unbeknownst to me he went stole a neighbors paper just to not come back empty mouthed ...I was like "what is this? we don't get the times!" He LOVED to help bring in groceries too! He would happily carry anything he could get his mouth around into the kitchen making as many trips to the car as we would let him ....He was so darn smart! crying.... Put him down at 13 years old just a few months ago when he could hardly walk and had no idea where he was, no appetite and massively huge tumor that just exploded in growth in his abdomen ... oh man....

I love that you tell it like it REALLY is so people don't get a bloodhound just because they like the look and idea ...people need to KNOW....like with how cool my gsds are? Having shared all the cool things above? do NOT NOT NOT get a gsd just because that all their ability tickles you...that is only the fun part of owning the breed ...rescues are FULL of abandoned gsds people could not deal with ...like the bloodhounds apparently you have a LOT OF work that you HAVE to be up to...and there is no locking them in a backyard alone....they are FAMILY or will make you miserable...they need lots...LOTS of attention and exercise you HAVE to be willing to DO every single day ...really hampers life styles ..you must conform to THEM...

I've had two German Shepherds before, and I've thought for a while now that if I ever get another dog I'd like it to be either a Beagle or a Bloodhound. Ideally though I'd like to adopt an older dog that needed a good life in a new home, so I'd take whichever had been in the shelter the longest.

Boy could I do with you. I am on my second rescue Bloodhound because I just love them to bits. Neither has had any etiquette. They please themselves and are quite stubborn, but you are correct in saying that they do make you laugh every day and are very mild and easy going. Very easy to fall in love with. My older female is especially precious, she has the gas of an elephant, snores like a freight train, digs up my sofa pillows and plonks her chubby bottom down to nap. Oh, and she eats every thing and any thing she can get her paws on then has the effrontery of belching loudly in your face. What's not to Love?

Out of the labradors the, German Shepherds and my British bulldog I have to say my bulldog is perhaps closest to me because she can anticipate epileptic seizures! My German shepherds are also Service dogs there is a lot of burglary and breaking and entering, so my two German Shepherds Pepsi and Max take care not just of my property but also the neighbourhood and it has made a huge difference! German shepherd live outside, they have a huge Barn with heating in it and they absolutely love lying in the hay bales and they're very good with my four horses thank you again for letting me see what your life is like, I too am single unfortunately I lost my husband in the car accident that was 3 years ago!! Love & Light Rana Myles xx P.s My Gorgeous German Shepherds, work with the police!!😘😘👍👍❤❤💐💐🐶🐶🐶🐶🐶🐶🐶🐶🐶🐶

I had a bloodhound and I loved her so.... much. But when she was 7 yrs. old, she had to have some surgery. She died in recovery. She had a heart attack. That like to have killed me...!! You are right... she loved me and my family, but she didn't like strangers. She was hard to walk. She was on a long runner, but she was an inside dog. I wish I had gotten some kind of training for her before she turned a year old. She loved everyone until she got about a year old. We do have a huge yard. I had a hard time keeping her ears clean. I was having to constantly clean her ears. Sometimes it was embarrassing that she didn't like strangers, but sometimes it helped. I had strangers walk in my house twice, and she scared them off. She probably saved my life, so that was times I was glad she was the way she was. Regardless.... I love and miss her so much. She didn't get on the future. She slept on her bed ( NO CRATES!! ) We did have a gate that my husband made of steal. It was down by the back door and laundry room. She just stayed down there when we had company over and she just barked at our company. I felt safer with her down there. I didn't want her to jump up on them. She didn't like other dogs. She only liked puppies and she didn't mind cats and she loved kittens. I agree bloodhound are the best , but I would make sure that they get so kind of training before they turn a year old. That way they'll like strangers a little better. It's hard to tell that sad face no...!! ❤

Currently have a bloodhound pup. About to be 3 months. Very smart pup but extremely stubborn.(I love that though, helps me better myself by being more patient since they are a sensitive breed) We are together almost 24/7. Other things you should consider if wanting to get it as a pup. They try to eat everything metal, rocks, wood, you name it. They can eat! So watch overfeeding. Their ears get dirty constantly so I would recommend ear cleaning/checking constantly. As pups, take them out constantly to pee. Even when you think they wont pee. They drink a ton of water so keep that in mind. I dont mean to discourage anyone just wanting to inform a bit more.

Hi Nice Bloodhound Lady, Couple questions about Bloodhounds. My only experience with hounds was a insane but lovable Bluetic, very protective and aggressive. He was a hunting dog and I'm not much into hunting anymore. That was 25 years ago. My wife and I live in the forest and we are looking for a "Great Protector" as my wife use to call our German short hair that passed about two years ago. I'm not looking for a killer, but we need a dog that will protect her. When I was a teenager a family friend had a Grumpy old bloodhound that use to guard his motorcycle, very well I might add. What do you think of the natural characteristics of a bloodhound for a watch/guard dog and family member?

My favorite all time breed.. I had one for 10 years, his name was Jake.. (named after adventure time’s “Jake”) I loved him so much.. Most gentle, sweet dog. They can be dominant & stubborn on occasions like my boy was but he was a good listener. Even though his huge ears were blocking his hearing 😂. Anyone who is thinking about getting one, please do. And RESPECT THAT NOSE. It is the strongest of any dogs’, and they can’t hear you too well all the time. These guys pull, so long leashes are really good for them. Keep them exercised well, 1 hour walking/playing minimum. They are susceptible to heart problems, eyes issues, and hip dysplasia. They are a pure breed so keep that in mind. Big sweet squishy babies they are.

The one time I experienced a bloodhound, it was odd. Resource guarding issues, bought to be a fur baby and ended up just not wanting to be a fur baby, which is so valid. She had drawn blood several times on people because they liked to make fun of her instead of try and fix the problem. Dog aggressive, no leash training, no motivation to cooperate, the family had no bond with her because they thought she was just mean all the time lol. She just needed rules, structure and proper training. I felt for that ol girl. Make sure you give your dog what it needs before you “spoil” it with shit they don’t need. They have no concept of money they don’t care how much shit cost. They just know the life you provide for them. If you expect a thank you, you won’t get it. They dont have to be grateful that they live w u, They don’t care. They’re dogs. They wanted that beautiful hound to lie around and do absolutely nothing. That imo was the abuse. I loved that girl. She deserved to see the world, she deserved the world. She deserved better. I hope she’s having a good day today.

All dogs are goofy, but hounds are extra goofy. I'm a coonhound guy (3 all-blue Blueticks) and you have to really run them, especially if you hunt them and it's best to do so with tracking/training collars. But I like your bloodhounds, they are good-looking and well-behaved, and I like you too because you've got a great attitude. You guys all have fun!

Thank you very much for the video. Picked up a Bloodhound rescue a year ago, my first. The greatest dog I ever had, goofy, fun loving, best friend who rides in my truck very day. Great companion always entertaining! Question... Mine tends to be the peace keeper every time I take him to the dog park. If two dogs become aggressive he wedges his 130lbs between them and lays down with a goofy look on his face. He has done this dozens of times., he never gets aggressive and hates when others do. Is this common to the breed?
