Just found your channel & love it! Was thinking though - I always thought the "pride" was Darcy but the "prejudice" was Elizabeth. She pre-judges Darcy because he's quiet & prideful - she believes the worst about him (Wickham). I might be wrong but thought I'd add to the discussion...

I know what you mean. I recently read Shirley by Charlotte Brontë and, once you get past the first 70 pages or so, I think it's just as good, if not even better, than Jane Austen. You should give it a try!

I totally agree about Mansfield Park - it is such a fascinating and underrated book! It is definitely my favourites to study. I'm glad to hear you loved Lady Susan that much - it is just so utterly hilarious and just so wonderful. (Also, I like that you bought your copy of the History of England at the Jane Austen Centre in Bath. I used to work there.) Sense and Sensibility is my least favourite Austen, but still definitely worth a read.

I just wanted to encourage you about reading Sense & Sensibility. I think once you get into it, you'll find it a very funny book. Personally I find it funnier than P&P (Northanger Abbey, of course, being a totally different case). I think JA's sarcasm is at a higher level in S&S. It was her first published work and so is closer to her juvenilia than her other books.

Just subscribed! Found you through our common love, for classics and Jane Austen!! My first ever, Jane Austen book, was also Pride & Prejudice when I was a teen, so long ago, re-reading it just now, falling in love with Austen all over again, and just ordered a week ago new editions of 5 major books from Jane Austen that I did not own a physical copy, plus the remaining three, I have never read before, which are Mansfield Park, Sense and Sensibility, and Northanger Abbey! You got me excited to start! Also, looking to hunt down new classics I have never read before from other authors.....Loving your channel 🥰

Just found your channel recently and had to watch you discuss one of my favourite authors! While I love all the books (P&P was the first I ever read) but have a real soft spot for Northanger Abbey. I love the way Austen pokes fun at the gothic novel in this, and reread it whenever I need a bit of a giggle. After first reading it many years ago, I went off and read Castle of Otranto and The Monk, and discovered that I also love gothic novels 😹😹

Emma is my favourite! She grows a lot during the book, I hope you'll enjoy it. Sense & Sensibility is also good. The 2008 adaptation is very well done (in my opinion, on the same level than 1995 P&P), so if you get a change to watch it, please do! :)

I'm afraid that's not possible, as her only sister, Cassandra, never married and had no children. Tragically, her fiance died of a fever in the West Indies, and she, her mother, Jane & a friend, Martha Lloyd, all lived together at Chawton Cottage. Some of Jane Austen's brothers, however, have plenty of descendants, so you might be descended from one of them.

P & P was the first Austen book I read too! I've been putting off my last Austen, Mansfield Park, for years now. I really need to get around to that lol. I think my hesitation is because of its generally negative reputation. Catherine Morland is one of my favorite characters especially because of her love for books and her imagination! I can't wait to hear what you think of Emma. It's one of my favorite Austen novels, and I think Clueless is the best Austen adaptation for so many many reasons! I absolutely adore your classics series, and look forward to many more classics discussions with you! ♥

Your editions are really lovely, I buy most of my classics for free on the Kindle store, but I did manage to pick up the clothbound classic edition of Pride and Prejudice for one pound at a charity bookshop. I'm really looking forward to watching more of your classics series videos - have you thought about doing one on Thomas Hardy? Fantastic thoughts. Have you read many books *about* Austen? I’d love to see a video about books *about* classics or their authors! I ask because I just read two books about Austen (A Brief Guide to Jane Austen, by Charles Jennings; and Jane's Fame: How Jane Austen Conquered the World, by Claire Harman). I learned some cool things about her life, and about how her reputation changed over the intervening centuries, that I didn't know before!

I'm going to be filming a video about all of the Brontë non-fiction I've got in the autumn, as well as a video about literary biographies (but I still have a bit of reading to do before I can!). I can add Jane Austen to my list too for you! Claire Harman is such a good biographer. the only Jane Austen book that I have actually read is Pride and prejudice, two years ago, and I really enjoyed it. I think Jane did a really great job in portraying the society in general and the different types of people existent at that time. I am planning on reading Persuasion soon, as well as Northanger Abbey and Lady Susan. a video topic that I think would be nice is something about the male protagonists of the books maybe (for example, is Mr. Darcy really a dreamy man?), things like that, discussion topics

I'm working my way through Jane Austen. I'm currently reading Emma (my second Austen) and I just love how witty Jane Austen is. I read an article last week that said that a new mini series of Pride and Prejudice is being worked on. I don't know how they will beat the 1995 version but I'm looking forward to it.

I don't know how the new version will beat the 1995 version either, and I'm not sure if another P&P is necessary. There are so many amazing but unrecognised books that would make brilliant adaptations, so I'd rather production companies focussed their time elsewhere. But I'll still watch it, I'm sure!

I only read Pride and Prejudice long time ago, but since this year is Jane Austen 200 year anniversary I set a goal to read as much Austen as I can. I have until the end of the year to complete all her books :)

Even though Emma is one of Jane Austen's longest books, it's definitely one of my favourites. I would love to know your opinion after you read it! As for Sense and Sensibility, it is probably my least favourite Austen book so far (I still haven't read Mansfield Park or Lady Susan). But I've read it so long ago I wonder if I would still feel the same if I read it again...

I do hope you have gotten through Sense and Sensibility and Emma. i find it amusing that you read Lady Susan before these two. Then you can read the unfinished novels, The Watsons and Sanditon. There are adaptations of those novels where other authors finished them. I love Lizzie Bennett and aspire to be like her but I identify with Ann Elliot, the spinster who gets a second chance at love. Many do not like Mansfield Park but I love it. There are two parts of the novel, the growing up and the time before Maria's marriage and after her marriage where the sisters have left and Fanny is depended on more and she is seen as her own person. If you have seen the Emma Thompson S and S and then read the book, you will scream at some of the whole parts, parts that are important in the story were completely left out of the movie. Keep Calm and read Jane and by all means run home to Pemberley when your life is gets too complicated. All is safe within it's walls.

Like you said the 1995 BBC version of P&P is very faithful, the only other one I can think of which is so faithful is the brilliant 1981 Granada version of Brideshead Revisited by Evelyn Vaugh.

When some of Jane Austen books become films, they kind of change the films some what... they don't do it to the exact book which can be quite annoying! Can they not do the films to the exact books... i mean how hard is that to do!! I bought a Jane Austin book a good few years ago but never got around to reading it! But as i'm watching a few reviews of Jane Austen Novels reviews or as i'm watching now its all about Jane Austen!! I'm thinking of maybe buying one or two books! :-) I guess the way Jane Austin has written all of her books, they are for people in their early 20's late 20's upwards... As i may be guessing! lol But then again they could be for all ages!!

Maybe longer, but i was just reading bits of the books like sense and sensibility, Emma,Pride and Prejudice and northanger abbey. They were very cheap which is great! I'll go back there again and get them! :)

Is Jane Austen's picture on a banknote???

  • @andrew5456
    @andrew54564 жыл бұрын

I may be wrong, but I think you are missing the main point of the Jane Austen books. What Jane is doing is creating a female archetype. All of her novels create a female archetype, with the exception of Emma where she is creating a male archetype. In her novels, she is identifying what it means to be the ideal woman and what kind of a man this female archetype is interested. Of course there is a love story and humor and twists and turns, but these are all artifacts required for a good read. However, the main point, like in Jane Eyre, is to define the ideal woman. Please notice most of the other women in her books have some sort of character flaw that she points out very clearly to define what not to do and how not to act.

I can’t stop watching the 1995 BBC adaptation of Pride and prejudice.Very close to the story. The movie... too many creative liberties taken. Lizzie come across as impertinent and argumentative rather than confident and stubborn.
