All about humidity for Orchids - Video request!

Today we talk about what relative humidity means, why it is important for orchids and some ways to increase or decrease it.

Relative humidity refers to the quantity of water vapor in the air and is expressed in a percentage. 100% humidity means the vapor transforms into liquid and water droplets start to form. learn more about relative humidity here en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Relativ...
Many of the orchids we grow are epiphytic, or grow in environments where humidity is high naturally. The more humidity in an environment, the lower the transpiration and water loss. To little humidity and the orchid will lose too much water to function normally.
In general most common orchids we can grow at home are happy at around 40% RH and above, but there are a few that require even more.
Some ways to increase humidity is to use humidity trays, ultrasonic humidifiers or clay set ups. Humidity trays are efficient when the surface area of evaporation is wide and surface tension of the water is broken by pieces of porous materials. More on surface tension here en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Surface...
Ultrasonic humidifiers deliver coo mist and are the best method for very dry environments to raise humidity efficiently and fast. Clay pots and clay media are also very good at keeping levels of humidity high. More on my set up here • Why I grow Orchids in ... and here • Using inorganic media ...
To decrease humidity we can simply ventilate and refresh the air in our environment more, by opening the windows. But if outside the RH is high too, we can also use dehumidifiers.

    Very timely. I've spent the last few days trying to increase the humidity in my office where I do most of my growing. I grow Dracula orchids which, when it comes to humidity, are relatively easy since they're in a terrarium (I keep it at about 90%). But the RH in my house is usually about 25% in the winter (I'm in Washington DC). Getting that up to 40 - 50% is really challenging. I've been trying to avoid using a humidifier because they need to be cleaned and sterilized so often (at least weekly). I'm currently experimenting with a timed misting machine, but I haven't gotten it perfected just yet. You're lucky you're able to maintain such good relative humidity. My house and general location are terrible for growing orchids, but I refuse to give up. :)

    Maybe try the clay pots and seramis as Dani says this increases the humidity around the orchid quite a bit :)

    Yeah, clay pots might be the key. That's a lot of evaporative surface area, and it's right where the plants need it to be. I'm using plastic right now, so maybe I'll switch.

    it might work, especially with the addition of an evaporation try filld with sermais also, if you need added humidity... if that fails maybe cloche?

    Hello Danny, I love your videos because they´re so informative and you present things in an easy way. Also your orchids are so beautiful! Btw, got a miltoniopsis two weeks ago and I´m struggling. One of the flower spikes dried off already, buds on the second one wouldn´t open. Now the outer leaves started getting yellow and falling off (3 of them so far). I wonder if this is just a regular thing for milts to do? Or should I start worrying? Would it be better to cut the remaining spike? (Might it be humidity issues? The medium is definitely very moist, even a bit much for my taste ._. And I mist my orchids every day)

    Great series of recent posts on mechanics of the hobby... was surprised you didn't mention directly misting of the leaves and aerial roots several times a day. for my rescue orchids that have lost most of their roots I suspect this is keeping them alive while they acclimate to their new home?

  • @MissOrchidGirl

    @MissOrchidGirl

    Hi, well there's a good reason I didn't mention it as it can do more harm than good. Pooling water in crowns and leaf joints can lead to rot, also there are some articles suggesting that the stomatas will open more when water is present on the leaf, but the water will evaporate quite fast and the stomatas will lose more water than they will absorb in their motion. I will make a separate video on misting these days, think I have a little trick ;)

    Wonderful video as usual! I was curious about just how concerned one should be about the cooling effect of evaporation with clay pots and or clay media, particularly on roots. Just how cold can the root area get, and when is it too cold for the orchid to thrive? I heard this can sometimes be a problem at night and/or in the winter. Thank you!

  • @MissOrchidGirl

    @MissOrchidGirl

    Hi Lorri, yes it can be a problem depending on the evaporation rate. The faster water evaporates, the cooler they get. In my winter now at night I close all windows and turn on the AC on heat to keep at least 16 - 17 degrees C. The good thing is my gh is very humid, so the pots don't evaporate fast, thus they are not super cool. So the faster the water evaporates, the cooler they get actually :)

    I got a question. If you keep your humidity at 50 or 60 % and you want to keep the air circulating. Do you just keep that air circulatiing with humidity range only or do you want fresh air that may not be as humid to circulate through. I think I read that at night the humidity should be a little less bring that it should be cooler. So Im wondering I should keep a humid environment with a small fan just to keep the humid air moving then perhaps turn the humidifier off at night then either circulate that air only or maybe blow it out with fresh air completely at night the resume with humidity during the day? What about periodic fresh air during the day? A humid environment will always have the conditions for molds and stuff just a matter of how much control you have for keeping you levels minimal

    Dear Danny, my orchids were doing fine till we had a spell of very high humidity....80-90% both inside the lanai and outside. Now some of the phals have leaves with soft...seemingly water laden spots and leaves are turning yellow and dying....mostly from the oldest leaf to the most recent but also reverse...most recent & older leaves..for a few. What should I do to help my orchids survive? The cattleyas seem ok...sprouting new growth but my other orchids are not happy. I usually water all the plants every 2 weeks by soaking and then discarding the water and letting them dry out again.

    Hi Danni! I just wanna know if a broken pieces of clay pots can be used as a medium for orchids. will it work similar to hydrotons or any clay mediums? I really want to change my medium for my entire collection to make my life easier. however, there's no available clay medium in my area so I'm planning to break pots into smaller pieces and use it as a media instead. I have already commented this idea on one of your videos few days ago but it seems you missed it so I'm here again and waiting for your honest opinion :D thanks!

    +Jobet Tongol ...I think the thing you need to worry about the most are the sharp edges from the shards that you will inevitably create. Could maybe try bricks as well ...the typical clay browny ones...then you could spare the pots ;)

  • @EccentricNature

    @EccentricNature

    5 жыл бұрын

    I'm in the UK too and find I don't have a problem with humidity. If for whatever reason it is getting drier air than normal you can mist the roots with a sprayer or use a humidity tray with rocks/pebbles. I keep my orchids over the sink in the kitchen and they get lots of good humidity thanks to the steam from the stove and washing dishes and such. Either way in the UK humidity shouldn't be much of a problem. The only way it could be too dry is if you are de-humidifying your air.

    MissOrchidGirl hi thank you for the reply. I don't know what they are. just everyday phalaenopsis orchids. temperature. tens to stay around 70f to 60f. at least for the winter. humidity tends to stay between 80 and 90%. today it's a weird day and it's down to 70%. And temp is up to 80f. But it's a weird day. I opened a window to pull the temp down and give the plants some air. will be happy to answer more questions. as the next one to bloom. has two spikes. and I hope to fix this before it starts. if I can.

  • @MissOrchidGirl

    Like my viewer Calle responded, both are ok, the clear plastic ones I used for 3 years until now and they did great with additional ventilation holes on the sides (that I made with a heated nail). I prefer the clay for my new environment and medium though, but it can be tricky since you cannot see inside the pot :)

It wasn't a drastic switch, it took her some time to settle on this, but there is a lot of vids documenting the change and what worked and what didn't as well as reasoning.
