All about Growing, Harvesting, Drying & Eating Persimmons!

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Persimmons are a wonderful fruit. Often overlooked because of their astringency. A very popular fruit in Europe, Asia and the Middle East that ought to be seen more in grocery stores in America. It's easy to grow, it's reliable and tasty. The perfect fruit tree in my Philadelphia climate.

I agree with you 100%. I tell people all the time persimmons are great, whenever I can, I will hijack conversations to promote persimmons haha. What you talk about near the end is LITERALLY what I’m doing. I’m planting a persimmon orchard because I love them so much (they are actually my number one favorite) and I want to help popularize them in the US, because I know most people around here haven’t even heard of them, but if they HAD or if they just TRIED a good one they would love them too.

I planted a bare root Fuyu Persimmon last winter. My intention is to keep it pruned small for ease of picking. I've described the taste as a combination melon and mango. Love 'em. And you're right, they're really good dried.

Cut the nitrogen and add more phosphorus usually that works to fix the fruiting issue. There are other persimmon looking fruits that are different spicies and some are really good like the Princess persimmon (Diospyros rhombifolia)

I have never seen a persimmon tree in nursery I remember when I was very small girl in WV. Eating them from a wild tree that grew near my grandparents house.

what if you feed it phosphorous concentrate so it flowers and cut the nitrogen source. maybe it's growing wild like that coz your soil has too much nitrogen. if it's growing wild like that from nitrogen, the roots are not forming. without a strong root system, fruits will fall before maturing right? i dunno what you're using as mulch but if you're tossing stuff like grass clippings on there - that's very high in nitro...

My 3-gallon potted Jiro is holding onto one persimmon right now, hopefully it makes it all the way. It's probably a little larger than a golf ball and just starting to change color. I definitely want a few more varieties (Saijo, probably Maekawa Jiro, and a Rosseyanka). I have one spot for one in the ground, but I'm still trying to decide which one I'll want to do that with. Zone 6b doesn't leave too many options. Most will ultimately live in pots.

R1b Agreed. To me the Asians taste more like a sweet and mild cantaloupe...while the Americans tend to taste more like pumpkin pie. I live in a warm climate, and am able to grow both varieties...but I still prefer the sweeter & more complex flavors of the improved American varieties.

R1b In my opinion, Barbara’s blush, H63A, & 100-46 are tops for flavor....haven’t tried Prok. England’s orchard & nursery offer many excellent varieties that should do well in a colder climate...however, you may want to sample the fruit (wild?) before investing in a grafted tree. Many people prefer the milder & firmer Asian types.
