There's no doubt this works, but you can't get round the fact that any filter is reducing the amount of light getting into the camera; a red filter doesn't add red, it takes away other colours to restore the balance. For those of us who dive in deeper and/or less sunny waters I would always advise, if you can, to allow as much light as you can into the sensor and do the colour correction afterwards. For dive torches rather than video lights, I'd say be aware that you can have the reverse effect and flood the subject with so much light that the video will show nothing; your eye is a lot cleverer than the GoPro! So for a torch, especially at night, don't point it directly at the subject but keep it off-axis and behind the plane of the camera.

Hi Tim, there are great observations here. There are certainly many approaches. Adjusting white balance on video in post can degrade the quality of the image (slightly less if using Protune), so one would need to do side-by-side comparisons to see whether the increased ISO (resulting from the estimated 1/3 to 2/3 stop of light lost/blocked by the filter) creates a poorer image than adjusting the white balance during post. And of course, this will be different depending on every water condition, depth, etc.! I don't volunteer ;- ). And great point regarding overexposing the image using a dive torch. This is a result of the dynamic range of the sensor and overall exposure that the camera is using (likely sampling the entire frame to determine exposure). Great tips to help alleviate this overexposure!

Loved your explanation! Just one question, how do these filters compare to the "gopro" color setting that already comes on the gopro9's settings? Is it a big difference?

Hi - the GoPro color setting is completely different since color is lost underwater. You can use GoPro color AND a colored filter. I've always said strong ambient sunlight (not overcast, the sun is overhead or shooting between 11am-3pm) & water clarity are slightly more important factors to great UW images/videos. If/when shooting from surface-15ft. Speaking to the PolarPro set-up, have you also tried the Backscatter filter package? I've been deliberating between the two & can't seem to find a comparison review. -- But overall, how do you rate the PolarPro one?

Hey Karyleiana, that's solid advice - I agree completely. It's not the camera, it's having an understanding of the camera you have and how to maximize its potential. I haven't tried the Backscatter filter kit. I know it's popular though, just like the PolarPro filters. Would be awesome to do a side-by-side comparison, but I don't have the cash to buy the Backscatter filters. I have limited use with these newest PolarPro filters but like them so far!

Hi Eden - I usually recommend Auto. But if you enjoy post-production and color grading, then try Native to see if you like the results once you've done the color grading. Hope this helps!

Hi - thanks for the kind words. It's been a few years, but I do not think the Switchblade 7 works with the HERO9 Protective Housing. I believe that housing port size changed with the HERO8, making the 7 incompatible. PolarPro also seems to be focused on the drone and interchangeable lens market now instead of GoPro, so I would opt for one of the Backscatter Flip10 combos linked in the video caption.

Thanks for the info! Heading to Fiji to scuba for a week and want to get the best vid I can. This is probably a dumb question, but... can you open and close the switchblade under water while filming? Does it get water in it?

Great question. The filters are designed to be added and removed underwater ("wet lenses"), so you can flip them on and off with no worries.

I know this great video dealt specifically with GoPros, but I hope this question can apply even though I'm using a different camera. My Intova 4K has most of the qualities of a GoPro. I have a red filter and have used it with variable results at depth. My Intova also has modifiable white balance settings, including one for scuba which, of course, adds a bit of red. I'm sure I shouldn't be using a red filter when in the "scuba" white balance setting, but do you recommend using one over the other (i.e., auto white balance with red filter vs. using just the "scuba" white balance setting)? Thank you!

Hi Karl - Really good question. I honestly don't know, as I haven't used the Intova camera or know about the type of diving and conditions you're diving in. I would say to do a simple test on your next dive - shoot some footage with red filter only, with scuba mode only, and then with both. Make sure you note which footage is which so you can analyze it later on the computer and make the call. Hope that helps!

Thanks for a GREAT video! My problem underwater is always colors. The sentence that stands out for me is "filters help the camera's auto white balance". That really helped me understand things. However, I am currently trying to decide between the Hero10 and the Paralenz Vaquita, which boasts the feature that this cameras auto-white adjusts itself automatically on the fly to the current depth by actually measuring depth. On the other hand, I've read that the Hero10 auto-white balance is so good that I should not use any filters on a Hero10 at all. What's your experience? Would I still use red (or shallow) filters on the Hero 10... and do you have any experience with the Vaquita?

Hi Steve - Thanks for the kind words. I haven't actually used either camera. The HERO10 will still require a red filter at depth to bring red back into the scene... even if it does well without filters in the shallows. If you're using video lights at depth, then you would skip the red filter as well. I haven't seen a wide range of video from the Vaquita, so take this lightly, but filters work differently in all types of water color, visibility, surface conditions, etc., so if the Vaquita color temperature adjustment is set based on clear blue water on a sunny day, the results will be different in any other sort of condition. Sorry I can't offer a more concrete comparison between the two.

This way you can flip filters on and off instead of popping on and off a loose filter and trying to store in a BCD pocket or something. Hi Dani - This will really depend on a number of things. The goal is to manipulate the footage as little as possible during post-processing (but note you have more editing leeway when using Protune or RAW format for stills). Generally you can capture nice colors using the filter (e.g. bright, clear water), which is probably best. There are a few situations where it may be best to leave the filters off, however (e.g. deep and dark or near the surface into the sun where a red tint may be produced). Sorry there's no definite answer - it just takes a bit of experimenting in your conditions. - Brent

I'm going snorkeling in the Mediterranean and in the Gard region of France this summer. Would you recommend the switchblade with macro or is that overkill? Should I just stick to individual filters?

Hi Cory - Thanks for the kind words! Like you said, the Switchblade probably isn't necessary. I would stick with no filter or a snorkel/shallow filter only. The biggest improvements to your video will come from focusing on trying to be very steady while filming (e.g. smooth, stable footage). Sounds like a great trip!

Glad the video helped. If the inside of the filter has fog once you bring it into the water, just remove it, shake it around and put it back on. Should fix the problem!

Hey Brent! Scuba diver here, newly getting into underwater photography! Just looking for a pointer, you said the gopro has a focus distance of a foot, but with the macro lens you can get closer to your subject..how close would you recommend? I bought the switchblade for my upcoming trip to Curaçao, hoping to get some sweet macro shots! Great vid, couple things I was wondering about..you answered!

Glad you found the tutorial useful! You should be able to get to about 4" with the macro lens, but the best bet is always testing and reviewing footage to know exactly. Really enjoyed the tips, I had used the red filter and lights with my Gopro hero 7 black and as you said big no no. So if I want to really lock in my white balance, first do you recommend using a 5500K with a light no light? Or always just Auto white balance underwater? Thank you

Hi Albert, the kelvin temp will really depend on the water conditions you're in: shallow or deep clear water, dark green water, etc. I tend to use auto WB, but if you're able to find that a specific kelvin temp delivers good results, then definitely continue with that. I've also just heard that the new Backscatter FLIP8 filter and GoPro HERO8 camera do very well when using the filter AND lights.

Hi. You can certainly use Native WB with a red filter. As you know, Protune give you the most post-production options. That said, there are so many variables in filming underwater (water clarity, color, sun angle, depth, etc.) that it's hard to say whether Auto or Native will deliver the most accurate color - it's totally dependent on all these varying conditions. Hey, great video. I have one question though. Would you rather use auto white balance or the native white balance option underwater, if you wanna color correct the footage as well? Because you can't change the white balance on your Gopro underwater, it has to be one of them to get the best accurate colors, right?

Thanks Leo. I think this will really depend on the conditions. I often use Auto white balance and correct during post-production, as oftentimes 'underwater' white balance settings deliver too much red or dark colors that are harder to color correct. Of course, if you're diving bright blue water, then the underwater wb settings might work well. It really boils down to dive conditions, depth, light, etc. in my opinion.

Hi - I think it is going to depend on your shooting conditions and editing abilities. I would ignore the filter in the shallows, when deep, and in low visibility, but would likely use it in clear water. Color correction will most likely be helpful. If you're working on 'serious footage' and ok with some real post-processing, then absolutely use Protune so that you have a little more leeway with color correction in post before the quality degrades too much. I recently purchased a gopro hero 8. I will be taking a trip to Maui next month and was looking to purchase a dive filter for my gopro. I saw PolarPro has a filter that is called "snorkel" which looks pink, in addition to the red and magenta filters. For snorkeling in Maui, would you typically recommend the pink or red filter?

You mention the polar pro switchblade with the close up lens. I would caution anyone getting this product. The macro lens hold magnet is not strong enough to keep it in place the lens swings about on it's hinge.

I'm going to Cancun and Isla MUjeres Mexico and will be diving shallow reefs anou 15ft -30ft using gopro set up. Being new to the underwater video and photography world....How much light will I need on a bright day in the Tropics? Do I need at all? can I go cheap and get Amazon light with 500/750 lumans or should I get Kraken with 1000lumans or even more....I know at depths of 40ft and deeper having lights is a must and even then I don't knw if 2500L or 4300L is best? mainly for now as a new diver just shallow diving

I keep reading that with newer GoPros the red filters aren't needed due to their auto color correction plus post processing. Any truth to this? I'm guessing there would also be a difference in answer between shooting photos in raw (which the newer GoPros support) vs shooting video. Also, does the diopter both increase magnification/zoom (like a teleconverter) and allow you to get physically closer to the subject, or does it only let you get closer?

Great question. Using a red filter will generally deliver better results than any auto color correction, although this really starts to depend on depth, water clarity, water color and a number of other factors, so there's no universal rule. Like you said, shooting in raw Protune mode would be best so that you can color grade during post-processing. Most diopters will increase magnification AND allow the GoPro lens to focus at a closer distance, so they're really useful for close-up scenes.

Do we put the filter on before we get in the water or while we begin to descend?

Hi Ansh - I do both... I keep the filter on the camera so it doesn't hang from the lanyard banging around while entering/exiting the water, then once in the water I will remove the filter and ensure there are no bubbles inside before replacing the filter and starting to shoot.

Great video!!! I learned so much! Questions for you: why is there a separate “snorkel” filter that’s different from red and magenta? what’s a yellow filter for? Is that for diving? are gradient filters also for diving? Here’s my most important question: are there ‘perfect’ settings we must do on the GoPro itself to compliment the filter we are using? Thanks for the heads up on light vs filter! I would’ve never known to not use both!

Not like an external light that you bought for video, right? Why doesn't the regular photo setting have this "video light"? Hi Brandon - Great questions - something I didn't clarify. Yes, by 'video light' I mean an external underwater light I've purchased separately and use to illuminate subjects that are close to the camera. There are no in-camera settings for this. The closest you can do is use filters once you reach scuba/freedive depth. For snorkeling I prefer no filters, no lights. I prefer to take actual photos instead of taking screenshots, but it really depends what you're looking for. In simplest terms, on GoPro, a still image will have higher quality than a video frame (which may be blurry depending on the shutter speed being used). In short, if you find pulling stills to work for your purposes, then that's great.

I’ve been looking for one of these that will fit the dive case for gopro hero 7 white for a long while now, do you know if they make one for 7 white or if that model will fit the dive case for it?

Hi Brent- Are you able to revisit filters for the GoPro? The 12 is out now and I’m running into a lot of GoPro users on the boat that are saying, “you don’t need filters with newer generations of GoPro’s. I would tend to disagree. I also just acquired an Olympus TG6 and after 2 dives with it, I realize (I suck) how much more I need to learn w this compact camera- ugh. I do not have lights as of yet. Starting the research process. I’m not sure to buy a video light or a strobe…1 or 2 lights…and what brand of light. I prefer shooting video w my GoPro (12 here soon) and hopefully learn how to take stills with my TG6. Is there a video light that I can use on both the 12 and the TG6? Hi Keeferdog - There are certainly a lot of opinions on whether to use filters or not on GoPro. I haven't tested new filters on the newer GoPros so can't offer a personal opinion, however I generally use my Hero 9 in a flat color profile that allows me to adjust color a bit in post-processing. Red filters generally don't like to be too shallow, too deep, shooting into the sun, etc. RE lights vs strobes: check out this article and video: tutorials.brentdurand.com/underwater-camera-lights/ I can recommend a few lights and/or strobes for the TG-6 if you like. Any video light will work on the GoPro as well. Hope this helps!

If I’m just snorkeling can I benefit from just the light red filter instead of buying the kit with all 3?

G’morning, Brent! Question for ya- what does SRP mean? also, I think SWCY mean “shallow water cyan” (red filter) so what does GR and CY mean?

Hi Mike - I'm not sure about SRP. Do you have the context of the use? For the second part if SWCY means shallow water cyan, then I have to imagine GR means Green Water and CY means Cyan. It would certainly be easier if the publisher/retailer where you're getting this info used the full words!

That’s a great setup with the lens and filter at the same time. Where can I buy that same setup?

Hi~ I used waterpoof case with red filter underwater. But there was leak between waterproof case and Red filter. Is it normal?? I think there are no sealing btw waterproof case and Red filter. All product is like that??

Hi, I cannot comment for all products or your housing brand, but for the GoPro housing you will have some water fill the area between the housing and the filter. That is normal.

Hey Brent, does this Polar Pro Switchblade Filter actually work with gopro 9???

Hi Laura - I honestly do not know. but think the Switchblade 8 will NOT work on the HERO9. I do believe the Backscatter FLIP 8/9 works for the 8 and 9. The housing port is the same size between 8 and 9 (why the FLIP works), but the Switchblade needs to attach to the port AND the mount on bottom of the housing. The HERO9 camera/housing is larger than the 8, so I don't think it will work. Hi Brent. You know filters absorb some light which is bad when we are deeper, so isn't it better to shoot without filters and then color correct it with computer?

Hi Atabak, This is true, but you start looking at image quality comparisons of degrading the footage via color correction in post-processing versus shooting in low light (e.g. higher ISO). This is going to be different for every depth, type of water, etc. etc. I prefer to use the filters except if you're past 80ft or so where ambient light really starts dropping.

Not anymore. PolarPro stopped making those filters several GoPro models ago. I don't think they're available unless you can find one used. Based on your experience, does Polarpro switchblade 7 gets rust? Did you encounter any problem switching from one filter to another or using filter only then combination of filter and lens?

So far it doesn't. The only area of concern would be the screw for mounting the Switchblade 7 (and GoPro) to your handle and tray - I've had many of those rust in the past, but mostly due to not immediately rinsing in fresh water and drying. If you maintain the gear well with fresh water rinses you'll be ok. And no problem switching filters. The filters have a plastic clip that attaches to a stainless steel rod, so even if the rod accumulates some buildup it will not affect movement or switching of the filters. very nice video, glad I just found your channel. Say, new gopro 10, blue warm water scuba 10 say 100ft. would the single flip9 be good enough, for a casual user like myself ?? or does the dual flip add any benefit with the 10 ?? location is say st lucia, roatan, mexico, for example. thanks so very much for your time, (thinking single with some camera settings) my other gopro is a 4 silver with a flex dive filter, that i have had for many years on other trips.

Thanks for the kind words. One filter is great for casual shooting in locations like this with great visibility. The dual filter becomes useful if you want to start shooting smaller subjects (e.g. using the Macro Mate), or if you want to also keep a shallow water filter mounted to use alternatively with the red filter. @@JoelSc14 Excellent! It's hard to decide RE the shallow filter since I find filters to perform differently in all types of water and light conditions, depth, etc. So what works for one person may not work for another..

Would you recommend using a red filter or ambien if diving 30 feet or less?

Hi - This can depend on the water clarity and sunlight, but normally I would not use a red "dive" filter in less than 30 feet. There are "snorkel" and "shallow" filters designed for this shallow water that may work well. @@BrentDurand the place I’m diving is the Christ statue in Key Largo. From looking at photos it seems like a fair amount of light shines down assuming it’s not an overcast day when I go.

Is the water supposed to go in between the filter and the supersuit?

Hi - Yes, water should go behind the filter. There should be no air bubbles. The best way to ensure this is to remove the filter underwater, shake it and the GoPro a bit to remove bubbles, and then attach the filter again. Hope this helps!

Hi Ben - As I understand it, the only difference between the dive housing and protective housing is that the protective comes with one soft door and one solid door, instead of two solid doors. So I believe filters will work with either housing. Just be sure to use the solid doors for diving before 10m!

@@benlawson4182 They serve two different purposes. The dive housing (or protective housing with solid back door) are designed to let the GoPro go below 10m. The filters help bring color (a more natural white balance) into the scene. So if you plan to dive below 10m you would want both. You can actually use a camera with a red filter AND video lights together. But the video lights must have the blue filter.

@@BrentDurand I see it seems that there are a lot of limitations when you use a gopro vs larger camera. Should I go straight to a mirrorless setup then? I am thinking that I may be wasting more money if I try buying accessories on my gopro.

I saw once a video on blue filters for uw lights - they would work with red filter. They were crazy expensive (the whole system of lights and filters). I can imagine that budget light companies could do the same - introduce blue filters fo the lights

@@pawelsaracen That would be pretty wild. I haven't done much testing with various light filters/diffusers but imagine there's a lot you could do there, especially if you can add and remove them underwater.

I hear that the water keeps flipping them back and forth on the switchblade

Good question. I haven't experienced that issue, but I use the GoPro on a tray/handle system and try to keep it very stable. It's very possible that if there are quick erratic movements that the pressure of the water will move the filter(s) when in the open position. Hard to say without knowing individual diving styles.

If I use filters in the lights! Still can't not used the red filter?

Hi Fernando. If you are using video lights for a subject that is close, then you cannot use the filter. If you turn off the lights, then you can use the filter.

There are also filters for dive lights. Bc they're all 5500K (typically), that's already warm, so coupled with the red filter on camera, it would cast a strong red/muddy scene. But putting a "blue filter" on the lights will make them neutral/pure white again & cancel out the additional "red" cast of "warm lights". As he pointed out tho, this completely depends on what you're shooting, how close you are to subject etc.

A great point, thanks. I just got hold of the new HERO9, so will be in the water with it as soon as the swell here in Northern California fades. Have a few more ideas coming to supplement this video 🤙
