DMC is lovely to work with. When I use a generic floss from a cheap kit, I can tell a difference. Fancy threads are nice, but I agree that the cost difference is offputting. Thanks for the video.

I've been stitching off and on for about 40 years, and I know specialty flosses are a pain (though they look AWESOME once finished), so I though I'd share some tips about them. When using metallics and other specialty flosses, use shorter lengths and try to find a good thread conditioner as it makes the thread stronger and reduces tangles. If your floss begins to work unevenly, trim the free end (closest to your needle) and re-thread. And work SLOWLY, as trying to do a Speedy Gonzalez while working with metallics, satin or GitD (glow-in-the-dark) will bring great frustration, heartache, frogging and occasional fit-throwing. 😅 You may also want to use a laying tool of some kind to help stitches lay flat and to control your thread better. Hobby Lobby has something in their crochet/knitting section they call "stitch correctors", which look like mini crochet hooks with a knitting needle-type tip on the opposite end. They cost about $1.50, as compared to half a month's rent for most laying tools elsewhere. 🥵 I use a type of laying tool called a "Trolley Needle," which you wear on your finger instead of having to hold your laying tool separately in your other hand. It costs about $9.99 before shipping. I got mine from Everything Cross Stitch, but they have them in several places online. Hope this helps! God bless, and Happy Stitching! 😄 🌈

The Silver Needle,Su Casa and Prairie Moon Primitives carry DMC! Something I learned about DMC loooooong after I had been stitching, was that pulling the floss from the end where the number is will allow it not to tangle. Did that make sense?! Old dog over here learning new tricks 🤣

Dmc was the only floss I ever knew until I went to a Cats festival ( creative arts textile show with vendors. We meet designers from Stoney creek, sweetheart tree, Terrence Nolan)most fancy floss is made from Dmc.

❤❤❤I know you’ve said this in the past, but I would add for newbies-pull the floss from the end with color number on the label😊

I'm glad to hear conversations like this, especially to facilitate making and stitching being more accessible and affordable to more people. There are many reasons, both commercial and cultural, that artificial dividing lines develop between "good"and "bad" materials, techniques, styles, designs, etc etc. Thank you. New sub.

🌈 I'm 73. When I was a teenager I saw my mother using Coats & Clark floss for some flowers she was embroidering on her blue jeans. I recoiled and shuddered and asked how she could stand to touch it. She made that "mother face" at me. She did have a few DMC skeins, so I had her pull the two different brands between her fingers to feel the difference. C&C was so snaggy, and DMC felt so nice and smooth. She said she couldn't feel any difference, C&C was "lots" cheaper than DMC, and I was ridiculous. lol The next time I saw her, she had thrown away all of her quite large C&C collection and completely switched over to DMC. I failed to suppress a smile. She said, Thanks a lot -- do you have any idea what this cost me?!? Then I laughed out loud. It's floss, for goodness sakes. But, yeah, no more C&C in that house. She could feel it, too. lol I'm surprised anyone doesn't like DMC. If a kit doesn't specify that it uses DMC, I approach with caution and wonder if I will dislike the floss and have to switch it all out. I am DMC-spoiled. I'm looking forward to hearing in the next Flosstube University why anyone would hate DMC for cotton floss. I'm already entertained.

I learned to cross stitch in 1976 when i was 13, and have stitched off and on ever since. I also knit. One thing i have discovered that these 2 crafts have in common are the caution that must used with variegated floss and yarn. Those multi-colors look so gorgeous in the skein, but often they can give a disappointing result, especially if the variegations are high contrast. The high contrast and sharp color changes give a stripey effect that may not be what you're looking for at all, and using it all over an entire project can be a bit too much and even distract from the design. I am a DMC fan all the way. The colors are lovely, it's colorfast, it is smooth and has a nice sheen, and is affordable. And I've tried most everything that's out there and still always come back to good ol' DMC. I have unpopular opinions about fancy floss, and people are certainly free to differ, but I've learned some of these lessons the hard way over several decades so I'm dug in and not budging at this point in my life 😂! I don't think fancy floss is worth it. The skeins are smaller, they cost more, they aren't colorfast, and regarding silks and all that, heck once it's up on your wall, nobody knows the difference when they look at it. And as others have said, the overdyed flosses are often on a DMC base. I just find it rather snobby and elitist to be honest. I'm saying this as someone who has been around stitching for a long time and also got sucked into gimmicky stuff. I remember in the late 90s when Weeks Dye Works and Gentle Arts were about $1 a skein and we all thought that was so expensive! I still have some of it with the price sticker on it. I've used all manner of scroll bars, lap stands, q-snaps, etc...and these days I've returned right back to where i started, using a wooden hoop and DMC. Everyone has their own journey to take, but keeping it simple will most likely be a more direct path to happiness.

Diamond painting also uses the dmc numbers, which surprised me at first, but given that a lot of people seem to come to it via cross stitch, maybe it shouldn't. 😅

Lns' absolutely carry the full line of dmc. They probably decide based on how much space they have but the full line doesn't take up too much space when they use the wooden boxes. Usually more expensive than the box store or 123 stitch.

I live in arlington tx…. Our LNS, the Stitch Nitch (which is awesome and close… you need to make a day trip) caries dmc… it’s double the price in stores but I do buy it out of convenience, from time to time, rather than making a trip to another store…🌈

I think it’s notable that a lot of the overdyeds are dyed on a base of DMC - so the difference between a say Classic Colorworks and a DMC, is purely about the color (minus any differences in texture due to the overdying process), rather than about the legit *quality* of the floss itself. I would be far more likely to sub “fancy flosses” if I thought that quality wise they were better or that they would last longer, but in that sense, they are exactly the same, and I think that’s good for beginners to know. 🌈
