All About Black Neon Tetras: The Poor Mans Tetra

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

Black neon tetras are a fish you could very easily walk past in an aquarium store even though they area gem when you get up close to them. And they are incredibly easy to look after as well once you have them settled in your tank.
My favourite fishy stuff! (yes these are affiliate links :) )
Lights
Nicrew Classic LED - amzn.to/3fG3Uv6 - Traditional led light that's got a nice high output in a white/cool colour range. Makes plants look extra green.
Nicrew SKY - amzn.to/3Ktn45U - really nice light for natural looking tanks, also the one I use for filming.
Filters
Pat Mini - amzn.to/3fE1u0k - popular for a reason, just a superb little filter thats great for shrimp tanks and fish alike.
ASAP - amzn.to/3nBuytp - the old favourite and the one i return to most frequently.
Air Pump
AP-3 Kit : amzn.to/34UMA3q - Great little air pump, not a silent runner, but has been very reliable for me.
Tanks
Scaper 45 - amzn.to/3KBxG2H - a lovely high quality tank that comes with a super strong light, and a decent enough hang on back filter - perfect for newbies and scapers alike.
My filming stuff
Camera - Cannon 200D - amzn.to/354OLlc - nice camera, easy to use.
BigTripod - Manfrotto befree - amzn.to/3GLXDdj - pricey but super sturdy and can take being knocked over a lot by clumsy operators.
Lil' tripod - amzn.to/355WmQs - can't pronounce the name but it's been a good tripod for filming things on tables or when I have tanks on the floor.

Black neons are *so* underrated I imagine they’re often overlooked in favor of neon and cardinal tetras because they’re not as colorful, but they’re much hardier and still quite beautiful in their own way, when you have a big shoal of them moving together and especially when paired with more colorful tank mates They’re definitely a species worth considering, especially for a beginner

i was hesitant to buy them but my mom really wanted them so i got them. i added them to my neon tetra tank and they brought life to my tank. neon tetras are very calm swimmers but these guys are plump, peaceful and playful, they bring excitement and activity to my neon tetras plus they're dark, they make my neon tetras pop out even more when they swim together. im very happy we purchased these thick boi black neon tetras 😎

I love the red outline at the top of the eyeballs 👀 I would choose these over the touchy neons anyway🙂👍🏻 Great video, I am enjoying your channel very much!! 💯⭐️

I've kept these wonderful fish for years, and I agree with all you say about them. At first glance they don't look as interesting as other tetras, but when they are healthy, in a nice tank, with nice lighting, they shine with a gorgeous iridescence. I've seen mine lay eggs a few times, in the community tank, but I've only ever had one baby survive. I might try breeding them properly at some point.

Good video, thanks! I find they spend time middle to top of the tank, while my cardinals are middle to bottom. I also have a very different feeding experience... quick to the food and lively!

Black Neons were my first fish. I originally (like many others would) was looking at regular neons but someone reccomended these to me and I decided to give them a try. Originally I had 3, but quickly added 4 more so I could see more of their schooling behavior. I’ve got no regrets and those original 7 are still alive

My Black Neon really like to catch insect at the water surface. Its funny when I saw they all go crazy for one mosquito that flying at water surface. 🤭 While my Neon Tetra just ignore any insect that fall into my aquarium. But for Black Neon ! Its a free meals. 🤭

Nice video with great images and information, as usual. I'm pretty sure the fish that's called the "poor man's neon tetra" is the White Cloud Mountain Minnows, not the Black Neons. I keep a few in my community tank and this is a fish I intend to keep in a species only tank in the future. Thanks for your great work.

Hey Emma. Sadly no. My female wouldn’t stop laying eggs in the outlet of the filter (she could just squeeze in) and it became a real annoyance. Luckily I have a friend who keeps a lot of cichlids and so he now has the pair. But I’m keeping a look out to get some more. I may go back to borellii, bit bigger, bit easier.

@@tinymenagerie Today I popped into my local Wicks for rocks. I saw a video by aquaguy uk who brought a 22kg sack of aquarium safe cobblestones. Think he paid £10 per sack. Really good mixture of sizes also. I asked a store worker how much you charge for damaged bags. He said £1. I couldn't believe it. I didn't need loads so my partner grabbed a sack 3rd full.

True, one of my males has a swim bladder issue and bobs in the water. But he doesn’t seem to struggle and easily keeps pace with the others and so long as he doesn’t seem distressed I’m happy to keep him.

@@nighty4185 yes, you are right, "Proverbs 12:10" but things are not ending here. You are responsible for the way you breed them. That means you have to avoid inbreeding. That means that for every batch of fry, you need to ensure that you have another batch from a different line for both breeding and for sale. You are not allowed to sell pairs of relatives. or with genetic defects. But people can't stop being greedy (or lazy), right? Not the case of Tiny Menagerie.
