    You learn REAL quick the importance of signal and power supplied to the ESC, servos, gyro/receiver and slave RX's when you get into serious 3D heli's where you DO NOT want any spiking whatsoever, and with 3D heli flying, it's not like our rock crawlers and crashing is very close to total catastrophe many a times...just sayin'. Thanks John.

    Back in my day the bec technology was developed within the beginning of the esc. When I ran my first few Tamiya kits they used a mechanical speed control which had to run two servos, and an rx battery to power it all. When the esc became available they introduced the bec because the rx battery was no longer needed. The weight savings and lack of complexity, not to mention increased run times, was the wave of the future! Now, I run CC becs in my crawlers to give the steering servo solid power. I found the term bec confusing at first given my history in the hobby, but I certainly see it’s benefit!

    Thanks for sharing your knowledge and experience. Just a little over 10 years ago, I learned how to fly RC planes on a foamy electric Cessna, goal was to get into ducted fan planes. Anyway, like most, I hope, I use a BEC in my planes in case the ESC fails so I can still somehow control the plane and possibly land it properly or have a less impact crash.

    As a fellow "When I was your age" person, I also remember when you had to use a mini pack, to power your receiver (just like the Nitro's). When BEC's started appearing in ESC's it was a revolution unlike anything that happened till brushless motors took over the Industry. It was that huge in my opinion

    I use two BEC’s on my 1/5th scale. I run a 4 cell lipo pack… 14.8v One U-bec is used to reduce this power down so I dont fry my rx. The second u-bec is used to power my throttle servo at 8.4v Then my steering servo, which is rated for 4s is directly pulled in to the battery. Three different components, with 3 different power needs. Gets expensive when being competitive

    Question about the amperage capabilities of receivers in general. Do you or anyone else know how many amps a receiver can supply? Ive never liked the added wiring associated with becs so I've always purchased escs based on how many amps they're able to deliver through the internal Bec. The other day I noticed one of my flysky receivers had a 2 amp marking but I can't find anything in the specs about amps. It would be a shame for me ESC to be capable of 6 amps whilst me receiver was only capable of 2 amps

  • @HolmesHobbies

    @HolmesHobbies

    The traces inside are normally good for about 5 amps. Above that, it's best to have a bypass harness so the amperage goes around the internal RX traces.

    I am not a rock crawler guy, but I love these informative videos. I did not know there is a "direct power" servo. Which leads me to my question. I am a 1s pan car guy. Servos do not like running on 3.7v. Therefore we have to run 1s specific esc with BEC boosters. This limits the esc's your able to run, there are only a handful of companies making them with a starting price point of $120. Also that esc is not capable of running anything but 1s. So I cant run them in my 1/10 off road racers. I would like to just run a normal 2-3s esc. Will a direct power servo operate on a 1s lipo effectively??

    What happens if youre running a bec and servos on 8.4 volts and the bec fails. Either due to something like a short or maybe over drawing current (if that's possible) ? Does that fry your reciever or servos? IE. A 3a bec and servos require more than 3 amps.

I have the hobbywing fusion and set the internal bec to 7.4v to power the hv servo i got, but the receiver i plugged it into says its rater for 4-6.5v. Shouldn't the power from the esc have burnt up the receiver ? I don’t agree, John. You are right about the steering servo but on most of my rigs I have at least one shift servo (dig) and a winch. The servo winch wants (Reefs 499 servo winch) 8.4V as does the high powered dig servo(reefs 299). I have only recently begun to not bypass the receiver with the higher voltage in a bypass rig but what I’m getting at is that steering is only half the battle.
