All 25 Subjects Taught at Hogwarts - Harry Potter Explained

Ойын-сауық

Welcome to Harry Potter Theory. Today we’re going to be discussing every single subject taught at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. I covered this topic a few years ago, but then it occurred to me that, with new publications on wizardingworld.com as well as new game content, the list probably needed updating (which it did!). This also gives me an opportunity to expand on existing subjects further.
Before we get going see if you can comment all of the subjects down below (no cheating).
Anyway, I won’t dawdle any longer, here are the 25 subjects of Hogwarts.

Half blood witch and wizards also have the choice to go there but they also have the option of going to muggle school. It would explain why a lot of the pure bloods know little to nothing about how the muggle world works.

    Awesome. I didn't know there were so many. I recall that there are five basic classes. There is Herbology, Transfiguration, Potions and DADA. DADA is the one with the most emphasis in the movies. If there is a new character to teach the school, theier is the DADA class to show them off. All the teachers were important to the plot of of the respective book. Slughorn was a new potions teacher in Half-Blood Prince, and he was also important. The other four classes are taught by head of house, and there is an elemental connection. That was really cool. Hufflepuff and Herboloy have earth. Gryffindor and Transfiguration have fire. Slytherin and Potions have water. Ravenclaw and Charms have air. I remember Hogwarts having flying on the side. Harry excelled so well in his first year, he became a Quiddich player. I vaguely remember electives. There was divination and care of the magical creatures class. Then this video gave a lot more. Some of them I forgotten, because they are minor. There are things like History, Apparition and Muggle Studies. There are even some I never heard of before. I found it so odd that there was astonomy class. Astronomy is a science, not a magic. Did Rowling mean astrology? That woul fit so much better. It is really easy to mix the two up, because the words sound similar. "Ology" is a common suffix for sciences. I think it would make more sense if the science was called astrology, and the magic is called astomancy. I made up the word astromancy. It means "star prophecy", which is a good description of the magic. If Hogwarts students are going to go star gazing for a class, they better learn how to do horscopes and zodiac signs. The science has more to do with rockets and sattelites. Astrology horoscopes could fit in divination. However I think they are more appropriate for the star class. Divination can get really complicated in a hurry. Trelawny seems a bit frazzled as is. It would be nice to releave some of her burden. She can ignore the stars entirely. Then she can focus more on other methods like Tarot. Heck there are even other classes that are just other forms of divination. There is arithmacy, runes and the twig one. I hope Hogwarts never gets a class on reading guts. That is disgusting.

    I want to know how single teachers can teach every grade level of a single subject to every house in the school? For example, McGonagall teaches transfiguration for 7 years of students. If her classes each contain 2 houses that would mean she's teaching 14 separate classes. I'm not sure how many times a week a student has a subject, but the numbers don't add up in my head unless she has a time turner to be in 2 places st once.

  • @milanka882

    @milanka882

    It's funny, because I was thinking the same thing a couple of months ago. I used Flitwick as my example because he's my favourite teacher. Not only do the numbers for lessons not add up, but also these teachers are expected to be the head of their given house, and effectively alo-parent 70 students… The average number of students per house at Hogwarts. It's not really all that surprising, considering this load, that Hogwarts has a serious problem with pastoral care for students. There is a distinct and decided lack of pastoral care for students, and I would say that the teachers themselves would be horribly overworked. For example, getting back to Flitwick is my example, he strikes me as a very compassionate and caring person, but with a workload that has heaped on him, he wouldn't most likely no doubt struggle with wanting to give his Raven claws the pastoral care he feels they need but not be able to do so because he's human. I think that's why we see so many students be left to their own devices when frankly an adult should have stepped in. I would say personally, that Hogwarts would be a very toxic environment both for learning and for faculty to work in. Pardon any mistakes I have made here, I am using a voice dictate to do this.

Also not every class is full (since students can choose their subjects) so maybe for some classes they put 3 or 4 houses together. The other teachers might help out here and there. Who knows. It can work. But surely most house teachers would be overworked and would barely have their own life outside of it.

    @@uwesca6263 I'm not saying that they killed people who where already teachers, although I'm sure that did happen on occasion. I think that combined they killed and scared off people who would have become teachers. We know that Voldemort alone killed thousands of people. Also if you account for not just the deaths, but that people are less likely to want to raise a baby in that environment, then it starts to add up. And that's just the wizarding wars, we know that the wizards fought in and were affected by the muggle world wars. And you may be thinking what about the baby boom? But remember that right after the muggle war, was a wizard war, the wizarding baby boom would have been delayed, and then all of those new wiz boomers had to turn around and fight Voldemort.

    They switch days, if I remember correctly. For example, students might have Transfiguration on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday for an hour, and Potions on Tuesdays and Thursdays for an hour and a half. That way, all classes fit, and it’s closer to 7/8 classes a day. Still a really packed schedule, though.

    Harry would have made a fantastic defence against the dark arts professor. I have always felt that the patronus charm was one of the most useful spells in the entire series. The patronus in my opinion should be the first charm you learn in DADA. The patronus charm is an extremely valuable spell especially as you progress through your years at hogwarts. The later into your stay in the school the more time you will spend in the forbidden forest.

    The movies do what they can with their allotted timeframe, but the books are rich with the subtle details. The books better describe relationships between the various people while, in the movies, whole subplots are completely missing. One thing that was included in the movies that totally pissed me off was when The Burrow burned & there was that fight with the Death eaters. That never happened in the books. It was totally unnecessary & wasted time that could've been used to further another scenario. I never understood why it was included.

    For their primary teaching, I suppose a very basic education is far enough. Only basic mathematics is necessary, no need for science (we saw that pure wizards didn't knew what electricity was), and of course learning to read... and we may assume that this is provided by their parents or a tutor, since, and this is very overlooked, some students (such as Crabb and Goyle) have dificulties to read (and so write) properly, but it is hard to guess how it is evaluated during exaams (or if it is anyway).

Harry was (being in his 6th year) 16 when he learned to apparate and at the time of the test Hermione and Ron (Ron already being 17. I dont believe it was confirmed when Hermione became of age) were able to take the test except for Harry. “Harry who would not be 17 for another four months could not take the test whether ready or not”. Without the telescope, space probes and advanced tech we utilise to find such objects, would the magical community have been aware of Uranus, Neptune and Pluto, the asteroids, distant comets, supernova and upcoming solar and lunar eclipses? Eclipses, maybe, but it's very unlikely their knowledge of the solar system was extended much beyond Saturn. Score one for the Muggles.

If the books say apparition when they're talking about it during O.W.L.s, I suppose I'd stand corrected, though I don't have them anymore to look it up. What you're saying makes perfect sense, but you're incorrect. There are no examples of 'apparation' anywhere- it's always 'apparate', 'apparating' or 'apparition'. You're defining the two as if 'apparation' actually exists, which it doesn't. While I do agree with you that 'apparation' would make more sense, the reality is that JK Rowling simply decided to introduce an alternative definition to 'apparition', rather than create the new term 'apparation'. Lots of words have two meanings so this shouldn't be too surprising.
