Any new recording of Charles-Valentin Alkan is an event, which hopefully widens the public appreciation of this still unknown genius of the French Romantic period. After unsuccessful efforts at a brilliant concert career, Alkan went into reclusion, concentrating on teaching and composing his totally unique oeuvre, mainly written for solo piano. One of the greatest virtuosos of his time (even Liszt was nervous in his presence) he wrote piano music of the most colossal proportions, scope and difficulty. This recording by the young and extraordinarily gifted young Italian, Vincenzo Maltempo, brings together two of Alkan's masterworks: the 'Grande Sonata' “Les Quatre Ages” (in which Alkan musically describes the several stages of Man’s Life, from exuberant youth to tragic old age), and the 'Symphonie pour piano solo', a dramatic four movement work in Classical/Romantic style. As an encore we have the fiendishly difficult 'Etude for two hands unisono', a pianistic tour de force.

I had never heard of the composer Alkan, and I had been taking music lessons since I was seven years old. Why? He is a revelation to me. More than Beethoven, whom I loved until now, but which is now only a poor substitute for Alkan, unfortunately. Just a few bars in the second movement of the Appassionata, with which Beethoven now approaches Alkan. I don't understand why Alkan was kept from me and all of us. He is so beautiful, great, unique! Thanks to Mr. Vincenzo Maltempo for his great work!
Alkan was genius. This is one of the best sonatas ever composed. Alkan show his ginialityy, creativity and innovation. And Maltempo's interpretation is one of the best!
Une pianiste extraordinaire!! Bravissimo, Vincenzo Maltempo!!!

this recording is a real treassure.
I'm 15 and I love this so much. Vincenzo's tempo and emotional control is incredible, and so is his technique. The 30 years movement is by far better than Hamelin's pretty goofy recording.
Maltempo's quite a talent. It's strange that I've never heard of him.

Not that strange - he plays Alkan.
16:53 Alkan is a genius
He is a gifted master ...
Starting at 30:48 magic happens. That part in the third movement gives me shivers in the most positive way. Its so melancholic and sad somehow. I interprete it as the part where the middle aged man realizes he is getting old.

That's also one of my favorite parts. The whole sonata is one of the greatest ever written, in my opinion.

@@stephanjwilliams Yea, certainly. Alkan doesnt get enough attention. I guess thats due the lack of melodic structure of some of his weaker pieces as well as due to the horrible difficulties you encounter while playing many of his pieces.

Odd, I realized I was getting old upon my 20th birthday!
Maltempo is a music genius. Extremely original and individual playing as Horowitz would have put it
Alkan's music makes me think of Mendelssohn overdosing on Red Bull.

Grazie!;)

bravissimo.outstanding. great pianism. maybe the the piano isn t well recorded, or maybe it s me. bravo again.
Just the thought of Liszt being nervous in ANY pianist's presence makes me giggle. Then again, he also thought he wasn't worthy when compared to Anton Rubinstein. History begs to differ, but it is what it is.

彼はこの曲を十分に引き出す能力を持ち合わせていますが、ただ彼の冷静な性分が仇となっている...リストの場合ではそれで良いのだがアルカンには赤い情熱的な演奏が良いはずだ

Very quick but glosses over many details

He slowed down on quite a few of the more technical sections... Still an incredibly performance, but I prefer Hamelin's take on several of these pieces.
