(Alive To Die?!) John Wanamaker The Complete Story - S01E19

John Wanamaker Department Store was one of the first department stores in the United States. Founded by John Wanamaker in Philadelphia, it was influential in the development of the retail industry including as the first store to use price tags. At its zenith in the early 20th century, Wanamaker's also had a store in New York City at Broadway and Ninth Street. Both employed extremely large staffs. By the end of the 20th century, there were 16 Wanamaker's outlets, but after years of change the chain was bought by Albert Taubman, and added to his previous purchase of Woodward & Lothrop, the Washington, D.C., department store. In 1994, Woodies, as it was known, filed for bankruptcy. The assets of Woodies were purchased by the May Company Department Stores and JCPenney. In 1995, Wanamaker's transitioned to Hecht's, one of the May Company brands. In 2006, Macy's Center City became the occupant of the former Philadelphia Wanamaker's Department Store, which is now a National Historic Landmark.

I worked for JW while I was at U of Penn part time in Women's Shoes as a commissioned sales associate. Made a TON OF $$ for a 20 year old!! I became friends the other shoe associates in the suburban and city stores. I LOVED working at this company because I knew of its history and though I was in NY, I did get the chance to work in and with the PA branches. Whenever I had the chance to go to the 13th & Market store, Store 1 as we knew, I would. It was magnificent. Groundbreaking at its time, there were on the 1st floor, shops within a shop, designers from around the world. No department store ever did this. Boutiques within a department store. I remember my grandmother bought my graduation gift at the Cartier shop at the 13th & Market main store. JW was an amazing experience. Gave me my career. Thank you for this.

I grew up in Philadelphia in the 1970s which was, for the most part, an unhappy experience. However, my memories of the Christmas Light Show at Wanamaker's still brings me to tears (like right now) as one of the few profoundly positive experiences of that part of my life. Years later, I recall remember walking thru the store at holiday time in the early 2000s when was Macy's. The Light Show was retained as a tradition and as it began while I was shopping, I became a sobbing mess when the memories came flowing back. Not sure why but I think I associate the Christmas Light Show to be a rare instance of my mother's kindness by ensuring that I experienced the show. Whatever the case, it truly the most pleasant of my childhood memories.

Could you kill the background music? It's a distraction. And use your own voice please. Robots are annoying! Can't watch this.

What could have been an interesting story was ruined by that horrible music! Watched less than a minute.

The damned music is distracting, if not irritating.

Anything worth doing is worth doing well. This isn't that. I wanted to watch, but the production value is beyond bad.

It's the damned music!!!! It doesn't fit with the subject and it's a repetitive nerve wracking composition to boot.
