ALIENWARE LAPTOP REVIEW - Gaming Computer For Designers & Architects *honest review after 2 years*

Ойындар

Today I'm reviewing my Alienware Gaming Laptop M15 - R3 after 2 years that I use daily (at least 8hrs a day) for 3D modeling, drafting, video editing, presentations, etc. As an architect designer, I use all kinds of software you can imagine: Autodesk Revit, Lumion, Adobe Premiere, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Indesign, Adobe Photoshop, and many more. I am very well aware that this is an expensive computer, but to make my job easier, I need a powerful machine that allows me to run multiple software at the same time without experiencing any lag or inconvenience. I don't think my Alienware M15-R3 is still sold on the Dell website but I found a few on Amazon.

    @@malbeldesigns Some interesting results. There is absolutely 0 difference for 4k gaming performance if you run the cpu at max 5.1ghz boost vs clocking it down to 3.6 ghz and undervolting to the maximum possible. Not a frame of difference. I've tried a cpu intensive game like total Warhammer 3 as well and still I get the exact same results in terms of fps. The main difference is that the temps lower significantly, creating some headroom for gpu overclocking or just simply, lower operating temps. In contrast, just undervolting without limiting the max clock is the way to go for productivity. Cinebench R23 at 18400+ and 1900+ is desktop level ryzen 5900x performance. The noise seems fine. Not audible at balanced and audible at performance and higher. Bare in mind im used to custom watercooled rigs which is near-silent at the highest possible overclocks. For my use case ill run at 3.6 with max undervolt since theres no performance difference and ill switch to 4.8ghz max for premiere pro rendering etc. Review in progress so stay tuned 😊 Check out some early pics: www.reddit.com/r/Alienware/comments/vl1gtr/x17_r2_with_4k_screen_max_specced/?

    I have an Alienware X17 R2 and have had it for a little over 6 yrs now. It handles two versions of Revit open at the same time plus AutoCAD when I need to cross-reference between files. It has had a couple of blue screens, but otherwise good laptop to have. I do agree with you regarding getting more memory as Revit and the other programs you're using do take up much.

    Great video! You are probably really busy to make too many performance videos, but users who do what we do need to hear more about hardware and performance. So many KZreadrs make videos for content creators, and I don't know of anyone who makes them to show performance with Revit, Lumion and the heavy design/rendering programs. They all like to mention "architects" but none of them do any testing on programs that we deal with that you mentioned. If I knew how to make videos I would do them but have not gotten there yet! I run Lumion on my Alienware desktop with RTX2080ti and it flies but want a laptop to do all the modeling work and then the long 12-20 hour animation renders I will do on my desktop so my laptop doesn't deal with all that heat for such a long amount of time. BTW...when you order your machine, just remember that the high resolution 4k screen on your new laptop is going to affect the framerates in Lumion so you will have some performance drop. I wanted to mention something that may help you. I don't know if Google drive works like Dropbox in this way, but in Dropbox, you can do what is called selective sync which means you tell Dropbox what files you actually want to be locally saved for offline access to your computer or something like that. It is a great way for you to not use all your storage on archived work or work you do not really access. You can free up a ton of storage space if Google drive works this way, so you aren't hogging up storage on your local disc with stuff that you don't need to access but don't want to lose either. Hope that makes sense. Anyways good luck and I hope to see your video of your new machine!

    Thank you so much for watching :) and thanks for letting me know about the 4k performance drop. Would you say the drop is significant? Cause I would prefer better performance over 4k if I can skip the 4k option. Also, I will look into the dropbox, I don’t think google drive has that (not that I know of) by the way, what desktop do you have? My brother (a software engineer) keeps recommending me a desktop for all the long video renderings too but I wasn’t sure about the specs.

    @@malbeldesigns I have noticed using a 4k monitor compared to a non 4k monitor I can get somewhere around 25% better framerates which equates to a smoother experience. This happens when I do it on my laptop too which can make a difference but if you are not using a lot of vegetation in your models like I am, it may not even be very noticeable to you. And depending on how you use layers in Lumion, that can help you a lot too. Battery life on the non 4k is going to be much better too if you are doing some things with it on the go and can't plug in to power. Lumion really recommends not getting 4k displays so you have the best performance possible...a sluggish model is so annoying!! I have an Alienware Aurora desktop with RTX 2080ti / 32gb of ram/ i9-9900k processor/liquid cooled and I can't remember what wattage power supply it is, but it is the biggest they make for this machine. It tears through things really well but there are def some newer cards that are more powerful. Your brother is right about getting a desktop for long renders. Running long renders on a laptop is going to produce a lot of heat which could throttle the GPU and slow down the render taking it longer to cook. Desktop GPUs are so much more powerful and will reduce your render times by quite a bit. You also can be letting a machine cook an animation while you are still working on another project. I don't know how laptops handle running 15-20 hours straight running a render with the GPU maxed out like Lumion will do. You can find really good deals on Dell refurbished for these desktops all the time and save quite a bit of cash and still get a 1-year warranty. Hope this helps and not confusing!

    I guess you already know by now that the new Alienware is out with the 13th GEN Intel and the RTX 4000 series I was just getting an M 18 if you want a bigger screen and the ram and the hard drives are upgradable . I would get the smallest amount possible for the SSD and the same for the ram. Alienware wants to charge you too much money for they’re slow RAM and hard drive. The speed of the ram is 4800 MHz and the solid-state drive is not that fast. You can get 5600 MHz ram cheaper than what Alienware wants to sell it to you for and get 64 gig two sticks of 32 gig. And you can get 7000 mbps read solid state drives and you can put four of them in there. This year for CPUs you can either get the AMD 7000 series or Intel 13th generation. The AMD 7000 series may be better for someone like you.

    That’s good to know they are upgradable now. How heavy is M18? Ideally the bigger the screen the better but I’m worried it’s too chunky and heavy to move it around.

  • @BelongsToJesus

    @BelongsToJesus

    @@malbeldesigns are chunky beasts. The 18 inch is 8.9 pounds which is not as bad as my last gaming laptop which was 11 pounds. The m16 is 7.17 pounds a little lighter. The X 16 is lighter of course at 6 pounds but has limited CPU options and is not using the fastest 13th GEN Intel it uses the HK version of the processor instead of the HX. And there’s a more expensive as you’re buying a more premium laptop kinda like comparing a typical PC laptop to a MacBook Pro it looks nice, but it’s kind of limited and more expensive for the aesthetics and it being a bit more lighter. Also, the ram is not upgradable as it soldered on to the board on the X series

    @@malbeldesigns very true, I now got a Zephyrus G14 thinking that my mb m1 pro is holding me back, now after realizing it , what we don’t normally take consideration is the time it takes the boot the pc, to plug-in them, transfer files, connect printers, portability, power while plugged in or not etc. When I had the MacBook my goal was always to see how fast the battery would drain, once I unplug from the wall it feels like something is missing, also the fans are really like jet engines lmfao. When I had a mac the only issues are like you stated, unsupported apps. But at this point I think the biggest one holding many architectural needs back is autodesk apps. And I’ve already got a good workflow without them, never the less non autodesk apps are not the industry standard, and working without them can really be a pain in the neck. Keep us updated when you get a better one.
