The first Alien movie was a haunted house flick, set aboard a spaceship. A few well-timed shocks and scares to make you jump. The tension was ratcheted up bit by bit, and you only saw the xenomorph in part or in extreme close up so you never got to see the whole thing till near the end. The problem is that now we know very well what it looks like, how it reproduces, and what the chest bursters do. I fear that, try as they might, they'll never recapture the fear and the shock value of that first film.

While I understand everyone wants to make another Alien movie that has the same impact as the first, movie directors would do better taking the franchise to different places instead of trying to remake the original. There were several reasons the first will always be the best and most memorable. One, it was new. We had never seen a Xenomorph before. "Monsters" in horror movies were usually misshapen, slow lumbering things. The Xenomorph, thanks to it's designer, literally looks alien. Like something that could exist on another planet. It is instantly recognizable as a predator: if the exposed teeth didn't give it away, it's sleek black body does. It conjures images of spiders and insects. The way it "reproduces" is designed to inflict the ick factor on us - it forces a penis-like tendril down the throat and lays eggs - but also keeps you alive while doing so. And the young quite literally explode out of the body in a gout of blood and agony. Everything about the alien, even to how it changes the interior of the craft to a more biological, seeping form, makes us feel anxious, fear, dread and a primitive fear of being in the vicinity of something much, much more powerful than we are. Add to that the astounding sound effects - the hissing of the alien, the jarring alarm of the motion detector that lets you know your death is coming for you....the reason the first and second Alien movies will never be surpassed is simply because it was new, and we had never experienced anything like that before.

Yeah but the fans whine whenever they try to do something new. That's all the purist fans want to see. A 30th xenomorph slasher film. Prometheus tried to go a totally different direction and everyone shit on it. So they went back to the same old repetitive shit. How many way can we see a xenomorph eviscerate someone before it gets old? To me it got old 15 years ago.

I dunno, seeing the kid crew and 20 face huggers busting out of a door makes me think they're totally missing the mark... again.

Why don't all the space crews know by now to stay away from these damn xenomorphs?

There was actual talk of the creators scrapping the story of alien 3 and heading in a different direction of what happened in RIPLEYS legacy.

"Prometheus" is the first installment in this series, which revealed incredible facts about the world and humanity. From then on, it's basically an extraterrestrial haunting serial.

i would love to see this universe in more depth, this just same dish served over and over again, i am a huge fan , would love to see other aspects such as engineers and there back story.

I disagree, the prequels deviated the core principles of everything that made the original Alien universe work, and the engineer concept is ridiculous when you understand the design of the space jockey - clearly not, nor was it ever intended to be a suit, and Ridley did nothing to reconcile that, he changed the look dramatically and relabeled it.

I just want an Alien movie that inspires a sense of horror. Like the video game Alien: Isolation. I love how they made that horror approach giving a sense of dark dread & bleak fear in the game. Would love to see that more in an Alien movie too. Less of an action packed approach, & more of a horrific one.

I think the casting was ok they brought in new talent. If you look back at the first ALIEN movies you'll see that there were some no name actors or some that were not that famous. Except for SIGOURNEY WEAVER and IAN HOLME.

I agree, but I don't see a problem with using 20 somethings per se, I don't think it's going to be lame like AVP Requiem. Youth presents itself as an obstacle to survival and a sense of fragility contrasted with the brutality of the xenomorph rather than an appeal to a certain age demographic I would hope.

This one looks interesting, at least, from the trailer.....and I DO know trailers are made to suck you in.....but this one kinda reminds me the first time I saw the trailer for "Aliens"....got super excited for it! So, we'll see if Fede delivers, or just makes a mediocre film! Time will tell!

Read that this takes place the period of time between Alien and Aliens ie. whilst Ripley is floating about in her hypo sleep, presumably. Looks the most promising follow up since the '79 and '86 instalments...look forward to it.

I hope this isn't just another 'crew trapped in a spaceship hunted by face huggers and a xenomorph' rehash. With the countless alien worlds and exotic life in the universe, we need a new and exciting storyline.

I see this a lot, but Wieland is already terraforming on different planets. I mean, wouldn't it be possible that younger people would be involved in a future where space travel is like taking a plane? They could be from a different planet like Newt was.
