Alice Springs and Town Camps: April 2011

Commissioner Mick Gooda made a three-day visit to Alice Springs and town camps in the area at the invitation of leading Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander organisations and individuals.
After meeting with individuals and organisations and visiting Town Camps during his visit, Commissioner Gooda said there had been some improvements.
However, Alcohol remains a problem and there needs to be community driven responses to deal with racism. Commissioner Gooda said it was critical that the Alice Springs community was supported in its efforts to overcome these difficulties.

The George Institute for Global Health's work in the Kimberley in WA is trying to help address some of these same issues in Alice Springs. Our work with FASD is particularly related to addressing alcohol in Indigenous communities as well as helping children and their families already affected by FASD heal and move forward.
