Alice Cooper : Killer and Schools Out : Super Deluxe Edition Vinyl Sets : detailed Reviews
Alice Cooper is still force to be reckoned with, but back in the early 70s he released four consecutive platinum albums and five Top 40 hits, including classics like “I’m Eighteen,” “School’s Out,” “No More Mr. Nice Guy,” and “Elected.”
This video looks at 'Killer' (1971) and 'School’s Out' (1972) both newly remastered with, rare recordings, and previously unreleased live performances.
'Killer,' the fourth studio album recorded by the founding quintet of Alice Cooper, was released in 1971. Produced by Bob Ezrin, who was at the helm of all four of Alice Cooper’s platinum albums from the 1970s, 'Killer' includes the singles “Under My Wheels” and “Be My Lover,” along with “Yeah, Yeah, Yeah,” “Desperado,” and the prog-rock-inspired epic “Halo Of Flies.” The Deluxe Edition introduces a newly remastered version of the original release, bonus material featuring alternate takes, and an unreleased live recording of the band’s performance at Mar Y Sol Pop Festival in Puerto Rico on April 2, 1972.
'School’s Out' (Deluxe Edition) The Deluxe Edition contains rarities like the single versions of “School’s Out” and “Gutter Cat vs. The Jets,” two previously unreleased tracks, and a recording of Alice Cooper’s concert in Miami on May 27, 1972.
The vinyl versions for both Deluxe Editions recreate the original album sleeves down to the smallest detail. For 'Killer,' that means a gatefold sleeve that opens to reveal a detachable 1972 calendar with a photo of Cooper in the gallows. The cover of 'School’s Out' looks like a wooden school desk and opens to reveal the LP wrapped in a pair of panties. The band stopped including the underwear following a controversy as to whether or not they were flammable. Thankfully, the lacy unmentionables in the new Deluxe Edition are not a fire hazard.
Both sets come with booklets that include track-by-track commentary by band members and former Creem Magazine editor Jaan Uhelszki, plus liner notes by Bill Holdship, also a former Creem Magazine editor. In 'Killer' (Deluxe Edition), Holdship writes: “Listening to Killer again after all these years to write these notes was rewarding because, like The Beatles and Elvis, it’s gratifying to realize I ended up ‘wasting’ my life on something that, even in retrospect, really was that great. Fifty years later, Killer remains a perfect - perfect! - rock ’n’ roll record.”

I was introduced to Alice Cooper by my best friend in HS. We jammed to Killer on an 8-Track as we cruised around at night. Killer is my favorite AC release. The Killer concert I saw in 1972 was one of best concerts I ever saw, by anyone, in the 1970s, and beyond...

Hi I tuned in to your review having just bought the School's Out triple. Killer was my second ever LP. Amusingly this was a birthday present from my uncle who was a vicar. We went to the record shop and he said 'choose a record'. He paid for Killer wearing his dog collar. Alice was at the time banned from the UK on moral grounds! Regarding the packaging the calendar with Killer was part of the cover itself and was on the reverse of the back cover and folded up so you had the band pic on the reverse of the sleeve twice. Once on the back of the tear-off calendar in green light and then on the 'actual' cover in red light. Mine is 1972 and intact. The strange shapes on the back of School's Out were actually fold-out flaps that slotted together to form the legs of the desk. I have an original UK pressing of it that I bought off a school friend whose copy we listened to loads. The knickers I remember he had and they were plain I recall not patterned but I may be wrong there. Anyway what does the new 'remastered' School's Out sound like when compared to a good condition first pressing. Well as with all analogue LPs of the early 70s there is no contest at all! The sound on the original blows this re-release (sloppily remastered from secondhand digital files at low bit rate) completely away. Dennis Dunaway's bass on the original is rich and deep, the soundstage and definition is superb. On the new release the bass is barely there and the whole thing sounds like it's in a cardboard box. This is as played on some decent hi-fi off a Rega Planar 6 btw but you'll notice the difference on anything. Worth having though for the concert recordings alone but get yourself an early press in VG+ even if the cover is bashed and hear this as it should be heard. Same for Killer. You should be able to get these for way way less than £90.

Green Label) The 1972 calendar was attached to the L.P., but had a perforation to tear from L..P. and put on your wall. My mom seen it hanging in my bedroom and asked what the hell was wrong with me! My first album was 'Schools Out' with the panties. Remember being a little dissapointed with it as nothing else was as rocking as the single. I was really into Glam at the time. Sort of ended it there until a freind loand me 'Killer' and was totally blown away with it ! Strange thing is 'Schools Out' has become my favourite ACG album over the years. Just saw an old clip from an interview with the band from 1973 when they where asked what is the best song they had written and Alice & Michael said 'My Stars'. I know Glen Buxton said 'Blue Turk' was his favourite ACG song. I 'm tempted to buy the vinyl after watching this review !

Not quite true to say the back of "Schools Out" is the same as the original. The original had legs that folded out so you could actually stand it up like a model desk with legs and an opening lid. I wonder why they changed the panties from paper to plastic? Interesting that "Killer" has poly-lined sleeves because USA reviews published today are complaining that they are paper sleeves and discs are (a) warped and (b) full of dust. I think I'm going to hold off on these. At this price point I'd have expected 180gm vinyl
