Hi Chi Keng. I remain optimistic. I have around 15-20% in China (6-7% in Alibaba, my biggest individual position). They are good companies, bought at very reasonable prices (similar to yours). Maybe it'll end up being a not-so-great investment, but (at our entry prices) I don't expect any catastrophe.

Yes the problem is Charlie Munger bought Alibaba at I think about $250 in Q1 of 2021 with P/E Ratio i suppose is at about 65, which to me is considered overvalued, even though Alibaba is a Juggernaut in China. Didn’t he n Warren Buffet thought us about value investing. Why the hack he bought Alibaba when it was above fair value ??? He FOMO too ? Ironically now “it is the right time” to buy Alibaba at $100 with P/E at about 20 now, to me it is considered fair value or even undervalued. I waited until a few months ago to buy Baba at about $80 - 90 I hope it will not go down further, with the pending recession. If it goes down more I will buy more.

That`s why u buy only based your own conviction. Even his mistake was in using leverage to buy baba, he has yet to sell his 300,000 Baba shares in Daily Journal. I do not think Baba is permanently impaired and I am still holding on

It is easy for investors who have purchased at lower prices to be bullish, however what about investors in mid 200 to 300. It should 3x from now to reach that price. It may take decades

Always look forward to your coverage of China. Last November I swapped my BABA shares to KWEB and I feel more comfortable about that.

he probably said that because he was buying when the price was high....but if you bought baba around 66-80 range its a good investment long term..

Happy i got out of baba last month with small profit after full year of learning about the business, took a small gamble to double down at 60 with only one objective, get out asap. Thesis is broken for me, value will not unlock as long as this is a political bet. Globalisation is on its return, there is a growing willingness in the west to no longer accept unfair business attitudes from china. I hope they will outgrow their current system towards more innovation and creativity.

Regardless of his view, stocks moved up and down and there's always an opportunity if the company stays as a good company. He and Warren Buffet claimed that Tsla is just an automobile company back then. There are many new things in the tech world which they don't understand yet. China can never be compared to US. China doesn’t deserve high PE. US companies do

Pretty crazy how the market reacted to BABA earnings. BABA EBITDA is now at around 8.5. That is for a company that is expected to grow further this year where the rest of the world is likely to continue experience high inflation and with a pretty big buy back program ahead. I think you will hit your millionaire dream Chi Keng.

I think Charlie broke his own rules when it came to BABA - weak moat, purchases at levels that offered little to no MOS. The questions are also bad though, they showed a superficial and biased understanding of China and those events.

I would say that Alibaba has a great logistics moat (cainiao) and the Alipay moat (in a duopoly together with wechat pay) is still intact and strong. Also, Alicloud still is the strongest Asian contender in cloud services. Maybe the B2C platform doesn’t have the strongest moat, but it’s not bad, either. And maybe Ant lost some of its charm when some of the financial services were restricted by the government. Main part of Charlie’s hypothesis-as far as I understood-was expected GDP per capita growth; maybe China is now on a lower trajectory than before due to the massive „involvement“ of the government, but the growth will most likely be higher than in other parts of the world. Where exactly do you see the weak moat and the bad MOS?

@@mawean logistic wise I think other contenders, eg, PDD, JD, are just as competitive. Alipay is ubiquitous in China but it remains to be seen if WeChat Pay will pull ahead internationally. As far as MoS is concerned, Charlie started loading at well over $200 I believe, so the margin of safety wasn’t big enough. In general, too much competition for Alibaba.
