Hi Ali! I've been watching your videos the last few days and they have inspired me so much! I've always wanted to become a content creator and listening to your videos have helped me look at it in a different way (like being able to impact much more people) and for reasons like this it makes me want to do it even more! @@samueljang1902 I think saying that they took advantage of the medical school system is quite a stretch. It's not like they never wanted to be doctors, but just chose to go through premed college classes and the rigor that is medical school just so they can become KZreadrs (who does that lmao?) They thought they wanted to be doctors, they realized they didn't anymore, and that's okay. I don't think we should hold people to things they put on their applications when they were 22 (18 if they are in the UK). People are allowed to change their minds and careers lol.

These are very good reasons for why being a doctor might not be for someone, especially an entrepeneur. But these reasons actually made me think my personal reasons for being a doctor are unique and special

I still think it's crazy I'm going through with it being a doctor. But hey I'm doing it. Love you both.

I kinda just have somthing to say o the personal joys of being a doctor. It's actually much more than helping one person at a soup kitchen. As a healthcare worker in a community you are really really important to that community or maybe I just feel this way because I'm a student from South Asia. A lot of patients I meet are patients because of bad policy or illiteracy or issues that have no connection to healthcare. Now after the pandemic we realize how MANY issues that just looked like politics or sociology are in fact actually our business. So yeah as a doctor I believe the way to give back is more than jus the saving lives part. I mean that's the job that's a given but being a doctor on a board and creating policies or advocating for something that impacts thousands of lives also matters. I hope this isn't completely off on a tangent but we need more voices from healthcare in places other than the hospital!

I think going through medschool and doing well is great proof that one's productivity/study tips are effective, and as such applicable to other fields as well (eg. Studying for something else, work etc). Good luck on your futures for both of you! @@primeirrational hey! Yes it's true, you become a licenciate of medicine once you graduate and it takes six years. After graduating you can practice general medicine or start specializing in a speciality. I understand the system is similar in Sweden?

@@valiantr0c kinda! > 50 years ago in Sweden, med school resulted in a licenciate degree. That changed however when another system (5.5 years of med school for a masters degree with around 2 years of general practice afterwards for getting a license) took its place. Now, the curriculum just changed again with med school now being 6 years where you get your license directly. I think you still get a masters degree however. Just thought it was cool you still got licenciate degrees :P

Very interesting video. Working for the NHS as a receptionist has somewhat made me see the very routine side of things that doctors will complete. By routine I mean such as paperwork, calls and lots of things I initially believed would have been automated. That's made me think a lot about medicine. Ofc I am still up for studying medicine but often I feel like it may be something that potentially limits my own creativity through guidelines. I've got a lot of writing and discussing to do and really appreciate great videos like this. Thanks Kevin.

Hilarious that he said there’s no barrier to entry for entrepreneurship. Being an entrepreneur is one of the hardest things to be successful at and is probably the only thing that requires SO much luck. The only reason you both quit is because you got the bag and realized you don’t even need to work.

Nothing but facts, I was looking for this comment. They are able to quit BECAUSE they have secured the bag already. I am a nurse with 5 years experience, working on weekends to finish med school, 2 more years to go. I would also like to say, fuck this hard work, I'm going make videos because the rat race is something no one wants. I can always try and start to make videos, but I'm 100% with you. I call it bollocks. I also find hilarious that they both make money off of selling courses and productivity tips to people who want to become doctors. Nothing wrong with that, but come off clean fellas. Wish you both the best, no bad blood.

I can think of very few peers who haven't thought about quitting medicine, including myself (I question it daily). It's a hell of a choice to make, with so many variables. But they way you guys have tackled it (the questions Ali asked himself/you seeking professional guidance), is something we ought to be doing when we're in that confused space. I think it's absolutely awesome and honestly, takes a lot of gut to stick with! So congratulations! And thank you for sharing your personal experiences! (Helps inspire those who want to do the same)

In the end, it comes down to not being passionate about medicine, at least not as much as his other passion. People who stay in medicine stay because they’re passionate about it even MORE than their other areas of interest. Because almost any other career is easier and less stressful than medicine, and if you’re not that passionate about it, there’s no logical reason to stay.

@@ievam6879 Yes, it’s a job. No, it’s not “just a job”. There are many jobs with a better pay for the same hours, less years and money spent for studying, less debt, less intensive, more time for friends and family, and so on. You don’t stay in medicine just because it’s a good job when there are better ones. Source: Ali and this guy reviewing his video. Those that do stay, stay because it’s their passion. Yes, they can switch to a better paying specialty because in the end it’s still a job (I’m going for anesthesiology since in my country it pays good, it’s interesting, the hours are comfortable and you still have time for family, unlike neurosurgery for example). But they won’t stay in the field at all if it weren’t for passion. Source: every doctor that stays in the field. You can say “it’s just a term used to brainwash”, it doesn’t mean anything when you still have too many doctors and graduates and too little open spots. They aren’t there for “just a job” when you have plenty of better jobs.

@@N1Rguitar not many , not interesting and less stable and secure jobs. Many ppl choose medicine for this and there is nothing wrong with it . In life practicality wins over passion . If everyone did something out of passion I’m sure we would have more ppl in arts lol. Good luck in the real world

@@ievam6879 Then I guess it depends on the country. Where I’m from, it’s not really a stable job. There are many specialties where you finish residency and can’t find a job as an attending. An example is neurosurgery.

When I was in high school I remember watching your videos. And I get it, in order prevent burn out u have to think many times about if med school is right for you. But unfortunately so many of ur videos discouraged me from pursuing meds school and made me think, "what if I don't have what it takes". Meds schools make it so difficult to get in all ready but I definitely found that channels like urs and so many others made the road seem impossible. I didn't think I had what it took even though in my heart I saw myself as a doctor. I'm sorry I know u probably didn't mean to make that impression. Fortunately my dad pushed me and now I'm in my final yr of meds school. But if I hadn't had his support I wouldn't have made it.

Glad you are enjoying medicine. Studying medicine is a different experience for different people. And working as a doctor after graduating is a different experience for different people. We are all allowed to enjoy what we enjoy. We also have the freedom to walk away from what doesn't work out for us. If you are passionate about what you do and know it is your life calling, please don't let anyone discourage you.

I heard from somebody this frase: in order to have success it's better to know what step you should make gradually, you have the instructions for the first step, you do it, you receive the instructions for the next step, you do it.... Because if you know all of the steps you should do, you may decide it's not worth it! ( sorry my English, I am not a native speaker)

Good thing I already thought of all these reasons before deciding not to go to medical school and pursue being a doctor. It's not that I didn't like the role of being a doctor itself--it was all the other surrounding reasons that formed the reality of being a doctor. I realize that I like the medical profession better from a far, and I still like to tune in on issues doctors face and the intellectual and rigorous challenge of pursuing medicine. That itch for tuning in once in a while is satisfied for me through following these intelligent entrepreneurial minds like Kevin Jubbal.

Any job you do will help people unless you literally work for a company that thrives on killing (a cigarette company for example)…. I work in a call center while I’m in school for nursing but at my job I am high level and can impact a very large amount of people. My job corporation is everywhere in The nation and other countries. We get to vote on how we help people. We donate food, we help with education, we help our own families with food, education, health care, etc . I love that part of my job and teaching others others under me to do the same

P.s. in the UK, when you graduate from medical school, you work for 2 years as a 'foundation doctor', which is the equivalent to the internship year (PGY-1) in the U.S., but is done before you apply to residency/'specialty training'. During that time, you rotate through 6 specialties, giving you more exposure to what the jobs are like irl and therefore, helping you choose a specialty.

Hey! Do you know any other countries which directly have a masters program after graduating from medschool? I am a 3rd year med student and I initially wanted to go to the UK but I directly want to start my post grad training in Pediatrics. I am keen on continuing in Europe

Interesting. In the U.S., by fourth year of medical school, people pick between diagnostics/“medicine” (IM) vs. surgery (gen surg). There are other, specialized residencies, too, like pediatrics, plastic surgery, integrated cardiothoracic surgery, etc., but most people pick IM or gen surg and then subspecialize after residency (during fellowship). So, technically both systems have some delay in their final specialty choice after medical school.

That’s very akin to how it looks like in Sweden for now (well, it just changed with the new curriculum here). First 5.5 years of med school, then 1.5 - 2 years of AT (allmäntjänstgöring; general service) where we go through IM, surgery, psychiatry and FM.

I've followed you both, but my "what if" is "what if I don't try to become a doctor, knowing that every career decision I've made beforehand was just denying myself the career that I've always wanted?" So now I've got to figure out how to get into med school. Wonder where I can go to learn more about that? ;)

Pretty bad take, nobody understand what being a doctor is… until you become one yourself or have had some life experience to put into perspective what working 80 to 100 hours a week even means. Nobody really understands this before they go into medicine unless they have some kind of off college experience.

I'm surprised you said that there is no shortage of doctors! We are continuously told there is a serious shortage! Finding a Family Doctor is difficult! Having is timely consultation with a Medical Specialist is a real challenge, as well! People wait months, even many months for a specialty consultation while in pain or being seriously ill, and, sometimes, years for a surgery!

If you watch Ali's videos especially the one with Sheen, he obviously does not come off as a caring person in his interactions with others, even with his friends. I think a certain personality trait is needed in helping professions like medicine, and it's not a good fit for Ali who is more entrepreneurial.

I'm skeptical of a lot of what he said, but I'll first acknowledge that he's free to live his own life and he doesn't have to justify anything to anybody. That said, I just don't think any number of youtube videos will ever be as impactful as even one life-saving procedure or diagnosis. I see his logic but I don't follow. I'm also sure the entrepreneur/social media life is more "fun", but disagree that fun is a major component of a fulfilling or impactful life. He didn't say that explicitly but it seems very important to him. I could go on I think - it's shocking to me how much I disagree with some of his conclusions actually lol, but I wish him the best. You as well. Last thought - medicine isn't a safe bet at all. It's extremely risky. You have to take out a quarter million in loans to essentially bet that you'll pass every test and check off every list when one foul grade could dictate the course of your entire career - all before you have any idea of who you are or what you're capable of, usually. It's a long shot from half-court & if you miss you get 250k+ in debt.

The attrition rate at most US medical schools is single digit. If you get into medical school and put in the work it’s very very safe.

Most people who take this safe risk have never failed a test in their life. School is an easy and safe route. That’s why I wanted to do it, because I was good at school and thought that that meant I should be a doctors because they’re the best at it. Wanted people to look at me as the most successful and caring person ever. Life eventually taught me that materialism and egotistical reasons were not what truly should matter to me.

To your first point: I’ve learned some really amazing things from KZread videos. Saving someone’s life who is on a dark path does not automatically turn them to a better one. A good example of this is of someone I know who died of heart failure at 54. He had 3 heart attacks previously and did not change his diet and that killed him in the end. Medicine saved him several times but he never was inspired to change or deeply educate himself which could have prolonged his life possibly more. I, and many others have found inspiration, education, and supporting communities going through the same issues I have on KZread. Now, not every KZreadr makes this type of content, but there is no shortage of life changing tools on the internet and videos that can reach and efficiently educate more people than a doctor.

He wanted more money it’s simple 🤷‍♀️ sheesh why can’t he just be honest about it? Wanting to go to the US to practice was the big tell. 😆

Well I mean this is why u should only go into medicine especially becoming a surgeon or any doctor if u can’t see urself doing anything else. You should have a extreme amount of passion for it that u won’t be able to find anywhere else. This is why I’m so careful on deciding if I want to get into medicine (in college rn) but I feel like the fact that i even have to think about shows if I went into medicine I one day would always have second thoughts. To stay in medicine u should only think about the medicine cause u can’t achieve that doing anything else. U can get satisfaction, helping others, problem solving, etc. somewhere else but to be a doctor/surgeon u have to want to be a master at that specific field and surround ur life learning just that cause it’s the only thing that will give u purpose in ur life.

It's been discussed, but to reiterate, no one would have cared who these people were if they had not been doctor in the first place. So, it's all good that they are now graduating to KZread in a wider audience but no one would have gave a flying f*** about who they were had they not had the initial prestige status of being a doctor and someone whom one should pay attention to with credible information I desire. Nonetheless, I wish everyone the best luck in pursuing the dreams they want to pursue in this life. Dr. Jubbal's pages have helped me greatly, but only because I respected the fact that he was first a doctor and a teacher 2nd. I still do respect him and watch his videos, but it may have been different had I stumbled onto his page after he left. Who's to say? I saw Ali's KZread announcement before I paid much attention to him and now, I'm like, "meh".

Still don't get something 🤔🤔if a med student both enjoys med and entrepreneurship,this video is likely not to help..I don't know for others but the confusion is still heavy on my mind 😭😭

Ali is without doubt a very intelligent and successful entrepreneur. It has been disappointing though to see personality change in parallel with the success. . Originally quite modest , now I find his demeanour to be very smug and elitist . Good doctors very much like good nurses , take up the profession not for the money .

Yeah I've noticed unless you're like a leader in your medical field, on a bunch of leadership boards or have a lot of leadership roles, or you have some incredibly useful side skill like being able to also work on advancing medical treatments or robotics or whatever then medicine is just unique in its prestige and money guarantee.

@@Ace-Ace1 What do you mean? Like they inherited the connections? I definitely think there's nepotism in medicine but there's plenty of people I know whose parents are doctors who didn't get into med school anyway.

I like more the idea of being a Doc and Entrepreneur and give some scale to that, but everyone has the right to do wherever they want with their lives.

The NHS and the U.S. Health "system" are both highly strained, and covid has pushed a lot of staff to the breaking point. Primary care physicians at least in the United States are severely understaffed and there are also insufficient specialists for the aging population. There has been a long running debate about how to fund increased residency spots to train doctors for the needs of the United States population, but equally important is keeping existing doctors in practice. I wish you both the very best. No one should be forced to spend their life practicing medicine if that is not their passion and they want to do other things. But to say "someone will just take my place" is just intellectually lazy. Over time, less hospitals and clinics in rural places can achieve staffing and they will close. Longer wait times will exist for patients to see their doctors and health outcomes will go down, cancers will spread that could have been stopped sooner. I'm not trying to shame you, but you are certainly not interchangeable cogs and infinitely replaceable, every competent doctor is contributing to health of their community during each day of practice. It is very valuable training and training someone else to do your job takes a lot of time and resources.

Why don't you become a doctor. Cause I don't think you are one. You don't know the stress, been treated as a donkey, no one teaches you, long hours and disrespect and spotted on for a mistake. Please even when I become a doctor only work at my time for money. Ig money is less quit. Cause no one gonna thank you for your work. Or be grateful. The real gratefulness is very little. Hospitals will be less? Doctors will be less? Good then people will value doctors. And not treat them as servants

@@evilreborn4088 I am a doctor. Ive worked in primary care for 7 years after finishing training. In the U.S there is still a lot of respect for doctors. We are the third most trusted occupation after nurses and fire fighters. Our reimbursement is at the 90th percentile. Its an incredibly long path and a very stressful life. I don’t blame anyone who needs to quit or finds a new passion, but its good to make sure you are going into the profession for the right reasons. Especially with a doctor shortage.

@@whazzas5023 that means you in line for helping people first then money. Good for you. And I am happy atleast us citizens respect their doctors. In India it's not the case. If you search news feed you will see beating up doctors just cause patient died with no fault of doctor. Police don't do anything. Only do to covid did gov made strict rules against violence on doctors. But I know it gonna be temporary cause as soon as covid crises go away. Our gov will go back to licking people asses for votes. Anyway I will have to get very high step one and step 2 marks to get the line I want in USA. Hope it atleast be better than my country. And I am first for money and saving people is byproduct for me.

@@whazzas5023 though about your very first comment. I don't agree with you that we are irreplaceable cogs. We doctors are very easily replacable by other people. As residency seats are very less as compared to medical students. And if hospital become less, cancer spreads so be it. At least then the people in decision making will understand the importance of healthcare. And everyone has one life. Why waste time living for others doing something you hate but is beneficial for others,. You never know when you gonna die. So live life for yourself and for your fun only.

So I was an investment advisor for 10 years and volunteer emt. Now I’m 38 and in med school. It depends what area of Medicine you do but there are many options to be a community leader and help many people as a dr. The problem with all these KZread guys is these channels don’t last a lifetime. I can’t imagine in 15 years any of these guys will be relevant. If you want to do business fine but don’t leave a good life for youtube

It's good that he's making definitive decision for himself. However, he didn't get to the point in medicine, especially in the NHS, where he can make the impact that's talked about in this video. F2's are basically senior med students/interns. One doesn't start any type of specialty training until the third year after med school, then it's ~8 years from that point until you're 'fully trained' and can become a consultant (Attending.) He's achieved a level of competence and expertise with KZread/Online that has satiated his achievement-drive sooner (maybe easier) than staying in medicine. I say this as a slight jab but, what matters in the end, is what he wants for his life, on his own terms. The NHS is far from great and could use entrepreneurship-minded leaders to help correct it. I wonder if the NHS paid better, if he'd stay in medicine (NHS pays like crap compared to the US.) UK - 5 Years med school (~23 years old,) 2/3 years foundation training (~25 years old,) ~3-7 years of specialty training (~28-32 years old, 'Consultant' title, full NHS pay of ~115,000 in 19 years [~50 years old]) UK docs can have a private practice which can increase their income. US - 3-4 years Undergrad (~22 years old,) 4 years Med School (26 years old,) 3-5 years Residency (29-31 years old, 'Attending' title, full pay based on specialty)

I agree, Ali didn’t get the full glimpse of what medicine is. He is literally just a 2 year doctor. He will never know the extent of his reach whether it be from administrative change in healthcare to new specialized services/ interventions. I genuinely think money was the most influential factor in his decision to quit. I’m a 2nd year medical student and I’ve decided that even if I want to start a business my first love is medicine.

Actually in USA some specialties last longer than 3/5 years. Neurosurgery for example is 7 years and plastic surgery is 6. if we don't talk about the sub-specialization after residency, which nowadays almost everyone does if you want to be competitive enough in your career. So, for example you do a residency in neurosurgery 7 years plus fellowship 1 to 3 years depending on which path you choose.

im not an influencer but these videos made me realise that i also dont want to be in medical school, i'm quiting too, wonder what my family will say since im half way through 4th year

If you plan to quit have a backup, it's easier said than done but write it out on paper, believe in yourself and just think you are giving up your seat for someone who actually wants it, best of luck 🙌

I wonder if part of the decision in leaving medicine has to do with some disillusionment in the industry at large?

Also depend of the posibilities and oportunities, because in LATAM You usually can't risk losing one profession becasue these are very expensive. Only one opinion 😅

I see these videos, I understand them, but I disagree I think the lack of mentorship, the lack of World experience, how young guys are contributed to your fickle Ness and inconsistencies led to you quitting. I am surgeon and I love it, I love working with my hands, I love operating. I wasn't as young as these guys and I know how age plays a factor that will never be addressed here.

Can I have a creative side hustle being a medical doctor? Graphic art/illustrator and medical doctor for example.

the moment when you realize that 'doctor' literally means teacher.

I would quit too if there where alternatives.

Most Doctors in the US do the job because of the Money not because they like helping other people. My question to you is why would you want to become a doctor in America, let me see is it maybe because you would earn a hell of a lot more money than in the UK??????!!!!!!!!! You can also pump gas, or should I say petrol ⛽️

It seems like you are happy to be out of clinical medicine. Does it not kind of feel "weird" (for lack of a better term") to be marketing to pre-meds and charging for services on their journey towards something you yourself didn't want to do? No hate intended at all!

@@kevinjubbalmd It’s true. You can do both but to do something at the highest level, you have to devote all your time on it. It is clear you don’t want to just be an average influencer, entrepeneur, or plastic surgeon, but you want to be best in your field on it. So you can’t split the time on multiple things and still be world class in each of them.
