Algae Scrubbers- Worth it?

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

Trying out an algae scrubber on my 210 Salt. Scrubbers can be used in both fresh and salt water aquariums.
For those not familiar with algae scrubbers, in a nutshell it is an acrylic box that uses lights (in my case two total) that shine on a perforated plastic sheet. The theory is to grow the algae on the sheet in this box, instead of in your display tank. The algae uses phosphates and nutrients in the tank, accelerated by the light to grow quickly. The sheet is easily removed for maintenance, where it is simply scraped off and placed back into the box.
The one I am using is from Aquatic Guyz, it is the AGS-250 model. The scrubber has been running on this tank for 5-6 weeks at the time of this video. I am running the AGS lights for 16 hours/day, they are on opposite schedule of the tank lights. It is growing an abundance of algae in the box, however I think I will need a little more time to decipher whether or not it is making a substantial difference in algae control in the tank itself.

How about that plumbing job! Mate the algae scrubbers do a great job but to bring down a high nutrient level can take a very long time. But once it has come down it will do a great job at keeping nutrients in check. Running it along side a skimmer should be more than enough filtration. You don't even need mechanical as your skimmer and ATS will do the job on their own.

In my experience having an outdoor pond, the sun seems to always bring in bio-mass into the pond. Me end up harvesting it by way of filter cleaning. More during the sunnier days of spring and summer, despite feeding the same amount of fish food. Thanks for sharing your experience and I look forward to updates. It would be interesting to know if you end up with lower nitrates thus not having to do as much water changes.

I think the issue will be that when I add the Clarisea Roller Filters onto this sump, it is going to make a significant impact on nitrates in the tank. The problem I run into, or one of I should say, with the filter socks is they get clogged up and become nitrate factories as the food and waste breaks down.

ATS are supposed to be a great thing to have in any set up but unfortunately from what i've read many years back in the forums, a lot of people didn't use it "properly", leading to them not achieving the desired results. IMHO they need to be run at a minimum number of hours a day (increasing or cutting back when required as things stabilises) and best to ran it when the tank lights are switched off. * Disclaimer ~ I've never personally used an ATS before and my comments are based on the studies and comments that i've read many years back in the forums

I scrubbed the scrubber….didn’t seem to be making and difference whatsoever. It is still all hooked up, but is being bypassed at the moment. I may give it another shot, but for now it is not being used.

When so many ATS manufacturers are opting for pink/ red spectrum why do you think aquatic guyz choose 6500k? Is the reason to grow a certain type of algae over another? Would love an update in a month or so on how it's doing, as I just purchased one myself. Thanks for the video!

I have noticed a slight decrease in nitrates and phosphate overall. Not a huge difference however. Now that it is actually "broken in", I am told that I should see a bigger difference going forward. I am skeptical but I am going to monitor it. I am ditching the filter socks for two Clarisea SK-5000's.....this in theory showuld significantly reduce my nitrates since they are indeed nitrate factories in my testing and observation.

I have had mine turned off for the last 6 months+. I didn’t feel that it was making much of a difference if any and was more hassle than it was worth. I currently using purigen on this 210 gallon tank, which is now setup as a freshwater tank with great results
