What a powerful concerto, brilliantly interpreted by all.
This composer can extend his initial ideas infinitely. It's a gift. The ideas aren't extraordinary but his propusive power is.
What a great and deep composition!!! What a fantastic Performance!!!

Конечно, у Шнитке было очень странное чувство эстетики. Но пробирает до мурашек. Страшно представить, каково было сидеть в зале. Это Зальцбург, как я понимаю?

4:22 is so eerie...makes my hair stand up
Gergiev somehow reminds me of the actor Jack Nicholson in the film Shining - with a slight psychopathic look. Some conductors are said to be psychopaths ... but he's awesome! Bashmet is the greatest viola-player ever - stunning performance !!!

Yes, Gergiev is somewhat "possessed" when he conducts but in real life he is very balanced, well spoken, rather direct person, does not care much about political correctness.

@@DAOULSORTES Да, почти все "современные", "передовые" композиторы слышат то, чего мы не слышим и главное в этом они улавливают порядок, гармонию, настолько необычно, что действительно болезненно немного. Но в простых вещах для фильмов Шнитке совершенно в русле возможностей обычного человека. За это хорошо, ксати, на Мосфильме платили. Этакая поденщина для профессионалов, также и поэты зарабатывали, на переводах, здорово получалось, талантливо и при полном одобрении Союза Писателей. Ни в одной стране нет таких замечательных переводов мировой классики, повезло русскоязычным.

It is true that Bashmet was the dedicatee of this concerto, but he made grossly indulgent interpretive choices. These piece wrote by Schnitke before the ONLY ONE YEAR of Chernobyl nuclear Disaster ...

Schnittke was for too long in a shadow of big Soviet three: Shostakovich, Prokofiev, Khachaturyan otherwise he would occupy more prominent place earlier. Soviet audience was already well prepared for his new harmonies because all his fundamental symphonic works Schnittke preceded by "light" music he wrote for movies as well as incidental music. Those lovely pieces were often "light weight" versions of his more serious works, they were accessible and popular, take for example his "Declaration of love".

I understand your opinion. Modal music does not go down easy. But this is not the hardest of them. There's lot of liricism and you can hear with your soul instead of looking for the melody. Easier said than done but you'll thank me later 😅
