Helmut and Alfons Klaas became world famous thanks to their results in the One Loft Races. They would compete in these races with only a limited number of pigeons, as opposed to some fanciers who send in 100 or more pigeons just to get in the spotlight. The Klaas pigeons have won the South African Million Dollar Race, the world's most famous One Loft Race, twice. This is quite an achievement on its own.

In the early eighties i was asked by an old friend of the family to help him as a translator because a Japanese buyer was coming to visit him. I went to his home in a very small village. When i arrived the village was closed by the police. After explaining why i was there i was escorted to my fathers friend. After the introductions the negotiations the customer asked for the price of a pigeon. I had to ask twice to repeat the price because i couldn't trust my ears. hundreds of thousand of dollars were exchanged that day for a few birds. Later that day he invited me to eat something. It was a pigeon soup. When finished he asked me how much my plate worth was. 2500 Dollar. The pigeon came in 2 days late and he decided that she was only good enough as to be eaten. even if someone had offered him 10000 for her
