ALFAMA, Lisbon: A Fascinating 1300-Year-Old Neighborhood
Historic walking tour in Alfama, Lisbon's most emblematic neighboorhood, with detailed historical information and context. Alfama is one of the most rewarding neighboorhoods for walkers and photographers thanks to its medieval alleys and outstanding views!
Alfama is the ancient heart of Lisbon and was once occupied by the Phoenicians, a thousand years before Christ. In turn came the Romans, then the Visigoths followed by the Moors. This is the usual order and recurring pattern of historical settlement in large parts of central and southern Portugal. It was to be the Moors who gave the lasting name to this area of the capital, from the Arabic "alhama", meaning "hot springs".
Alfama is home to many of the city's most important attractions: the Sáo Jorge Castle, once a castle of the Moors, Lisbon Cathedral (Sé), the city's main church, and the historic Casa dos Bicos dating from the early 16th century.
The Alfama district has an intangible quality that needs to be experienced to be truly appreciated, and the best way to get to know it is to get a little lost (something almost impossible to avoid), and wander around admiring the postcard-perfect views, visiting the churches, and walking up to the castle for the most breathtaking panorama of the city and the greatest sunsets.

1:08 - the blue/green door to the left, next to the awning, is the door to the apartment I rented during my visit! Portugal is by far my favorite country in Europe, and Alfama was the most charming neighborhood pretty much ever.

At 7:50 you can still see the walls of the Moorish Lisbon, probably 1000 years old. As velhas muralhas mouras com uns mil anos.

Sim, muito antigas! Na verdade algumas partes até são ainda mais antigas que os mouros. Sempre se chamou "Cerca Moura" às muralhas, mas descobertas recentes confirmam que o que se achava como sendo mouro é na verdade do tempo dos Romanos 😊

Hello Aran! If it was now, in February, the answer would be easy. Praça do Comércio, the large square facing the Tagus River, in the heart of downtown, would be the best place. Those are the most beautiful sunsets in Lisbon. But in August the sun sets further north, so it will be partially blocked by Lisbon's hills. One option in the city could be Sao Jorge Castle (open until 9pm in August), because it sits on top of a hill. But the most stunning place would be Cabo da Roca (Cape Roca), located about 40km (25 miles) west of Lisbon. Uber will take you there. Cabo da Roca is the westernmost point of continental Europe. Olá Maria! 😀 Aqui também tivemos um período, principalmente nas décadas de 60 a 80 do século passado, em que belas avenidas históricas foram "destruídas" para no seu lugar colocar feios edifícios modernos de escritórios, etc. Pode ver aqui neste vídeo que eu fiz da zona chamada "Avenidas Novas": kzread.info/dash/bejne/dH-It5iFgLm9abQ.html Embora essa zona já fique fora do centro histórico da cidade, por isso os danos não foram muito grandes.

Apesar de já ter viajado por vários países e cidades, Lisboa continua a ser a única cidade que me faz dizer "uau". Não é uma cidade "perfeita", longe disso, tem os seus defeitos e cicatrizes. Mas essas imperfeições e marcas do tempo só reforçam ainda mais a sua autenticidade e personalidade, dois dos principais fatores que a diferenciam e a tornam tão especial. Isso nota-se particularmente em Alfama, um dos locais que mais gostei de filmar até agora. 😊 E depois toda a história fascinante que envolve a cidade, coisas que só agora com a produção destes videos venho a descobrir, como por exemplo o passado da Sé Catedral de Lisboa, e a importância daquele local para todas as civilizações que passaram por Lisboa... Eu já estive na Madeira, mas infelizmente foi apenas um fim-de-semana e já foi há mais de 10 anos. Conheci um pouco do Funchal, fui ao Cabo Girão (muito nevoeiro, não vi quase nada 😅), e pouco mais. Obrigado pela dica, já foi para a minha lista!

Hello Steven! 🙂 That was a silly mistake I made due to being daydreaming or something, somehow I ended up naming the sculptor and not who the statue represents. São (Saint) Vicente, you are correct.
Lisboa fez bem em preservar os bondes (elétricos) . Vendo este vídeo penso seria bom se no Pelourinho em Salvador ou na parte histórica de São Luís passasse linhas de bonde.

O mais populoso talvez seja Benfica (como o clube de futebol), já bem fora do centro histórico. Lumiar também é muito populoso. O menos populoso serão os pequenos bairros do centro histórico, na Baixa de Lisboa, em redor da Praça do Rossio, vive muito pouca gente hoje em dia, é quase tudo hotéis, escritórios, alojamento curta duração, serviços, etc. 🤔 Mais estruturado e com melhor urbanismo eu diria, sem dúvida, Parque das Nações, tem tudo incluindo incrivel oferta cultural e grandes jardins e parques, que nem sempre há noutros bairros. Mais tranquilo talvez o bairro da Lapa, um pequeno bairro chique perto da Estrela. Ou a zona de moradias no Restelo, muito sossegado.😃
