Alfalfa Seeding Best Practices - Part 4

Ғылым және технология

Previously in this Alfalfa series, Pioneer Dairy Specialist Jim Smith has covered topics such as the Importance of the right pH, proper soil sampling, how planning ahead can benefit you in the long run, selecting the right lime source, and selecting the right seed for you operation and local conditions. In part 4, we explore seedbed prep and seeding during planting season. The biggest challenge is getting the ideal seed to soil contact ratio. With alfalfa seed being roughly 150 times smaller than a corn seed, it becomes very important to be precise with planting depth, aiming for ¼ in to ½ inch. Soil moisture is also a big factor, and using the right tool to prepare your soil is imperative to get conditions right to give your Alfalfa crop a good head start. Optimal seeding rate can range from 60 plants to 80 plants per square foot, though there are opportunities to go for a lower seeding rate depending on your conditions.
