I never used to worry about my 164 Twin Spark engine which was pretty bullet proof, but by heaven I lost sleep over the cam belt in my 164 24 Valve. I still loved the car and miss them both now I am Alfa less. Its true that all the cam belt failures seemed to commence at the 50,000 + mark. A bit of a comeback from Alfa's original 75,000 recommendation which was rather like playing russian roulette. Thanks for a great video.

Great video. I have done this job myself now. I took the engine out to do the head gaskets and I have to say that doing the timing and belts afterwards was fairly straightforward with the engine out, but would have been very difficult with the engine in situ. It would be very hard to see if, for example, the water pump mating faces are properly cleaned up. It would be good, Neil, if you could spend a bit more time on things which are second nature to you but might be new to viewers. For example, setting up the dial gauge and getting TDC , or getting the tension on the cam belt tensioner correct - perhaps zoom in on the marks to be aligned. These were both things that I had to search around to get information on. Thanks for putting these "how tos" on KZread, I will be doing my rear brake pads next, following your guide on those.

Doing this V6 timing belt is so easy with the engine is out, doing it in the engine bay is a totally different job, with the lack of space between the engine and the offside chassis leg in the way. But I’m the Alfa 166 model it’s much easier as there’s no chassis leg in the way, apart from the power steering bottle reservoir in the way.

Thanks for the great video. Good job! I have a question that I hope you will be able to help me with... I am the Happy owner of a tipo 916 Spider 3.2 V6 from 2003 and have during the winter had my cambelts changed by a professional. On my først run after change out, I noticed that with motor in idle speed, the engine (and steering wheel) has quite a lot of vibrations. When accelerating and driving at normal speeds, the vibrations dissapear and the engine is pulling and reving as expexted. Mu question is; can the timing of the of the cams be incorrect even though no warning signs from the dashboard is seen? The Mecanic claims that cam looks were used during the change out of cambelt, which I believe is correct.

Throttle body seems ok (I tried to replace it), plenum and air pipe doesn't get external air, flow meter sensor is ok. In general the engine is great, except for idle too low during engine idle. What about changing the cam cover gaskets on the Busso? Both banks of mine are leaking and I've already replaced the rear bank gasket about 2 months ago, but it's leaking again. I found a lot of mixed opinions on how tight to do the bolts back up, whether or not to put gasket maker on the cam pulley side and couple other things. I have just ordered a genuine gasket kit for both banks from Partsworld, if you have any tips on installing these so that theres a higher chance that they don't start leaking again that'd be great. Probably not worth a video but I hear its a fairly common issue with the V6, so it might be. Thanks

What tool do you use to undo the factory crimped bands holding the couplers on to the plenum and intake tubes? (And where do you get new bands and the tool to crimp them?) When I did the belt on my 164 I had to resort to worm gear clamps but the finished job doesn't look as slick and polished when done that way. Why did you put the engine mount back on the front of the engine if it is going in a GTV6? (Or is it going in the 90's version? That would make sense to have the mount then.)

Hi! I was wondering that once you have the camshafts locked in place with cam lock tools, can you remove the camshaft pulleys and put them back on WITHOUT marking their exact positions, and expect timing to work correctly once you have the belt on? Just put the pulley nuts on loose enough so the pulleys can spin, then spin the pulleys until all teeth on the belt fit nicely? Sorry if I'm trying to explain my question badly, never good at forming sentences that actually make sense :) Best

The cam pulleys are free floating and need to be left slack when you install the new timing belt, once the belt is tensioned up to the correct marks on the tensioner you then tighten the 4 cam sprockets as tight as you can, the camshaft are tapered at the sprocket end so they do need a gentle tap with a brass drift to loosen them off
