This is what made GG so incredible and timeless - not only is it funny as hell but for tackling themes that even nowadays are not very common (especially at a sitcom) and practically unheard off back then.

Also, in the 80's, addiction was almost exclusively associated with street drugs and alcohol. For decades, many women had been prescribed medication for a number of minimized issues. The idea that someone could be addicted to pharmaceutical drugs was very new. Also, people denied their addiction because of the strict correlation with illegal narcotics. This episode ran around the same time that the character of Karen, on "Knots Landing," was part of a multi episode arc revolving around addiction to pain medication.

Rose has some storylines that you wouldn't think would be associated with her, like this one, but end up being important to send a message to everyone watching.

Great powerful episode. So many people struggle with addiction. There will never be another show like The Golden Girls.

This show broke many boundaries because of the issues it handled. Topics that wouldn´t have been dealt back in the day. This one was one of them...and later on many more. I have to wear Fentanyl patches because of a rare chronic pain condition. In many cases I haven´t been able to wear them (they´ve fallen, weren´t prescribed, ran out and holidays happen...) and the withdrawl symptoms are AWFUL! I don´t know how anyone can do without drug dependency cold turkey. PS I did like that they spent the night together. Would have loved to see either more scenes of them in this episode or others.

What i love about the Golden Girls is every now and then they have a hard hitting type episode with really serious topics discussed.

Random bit of inconsistency in this episode when Dorothy claims Rose is allergic to cats. In at least three other episodes, she either talked about owning a cat or held one. Although I like to headcanon that Dorothy only said that to trip Rose up when the latter was obviously lying.

Another one of my favorites. Now I know that all of them will pretty much make you feel the same way, but this episode really makes you feel happy knowing that you have some friends who are there for you no matter what.

The benefit of your Patreon schedule is that I know you've made it into season 6 already. In season 5 there's an episode where Dorothy battles with a gambling addiction and the one to finally get through to her is Rose. In this episode, Dorothy is the one to get through to Rose with her pill addiction. I love how they parallel to one another. This episode is one of the earliest episodes I remember watching when I was a child. The scene with her cake falling is stuck in my memory for some reason so maybe it was early. Also congratulations on three years drug free ❤

If you are still dealing with the ptsd, I highly recommend finding a therapist that knows how to do EMDR. last year I saw a bicyclist get hit and die and had major PTSD issues because 15 years ago I was riding a bicycle and got hit by a truck. It only took one EMDR session and I did not need another one. Scientists and researchers don't know how it actually works, but I am living proof that it does work. Depending on how bad the PTSD is, it can take more than one session but like I said I highly recommend looking into it

I know I've had lousy pizza myself, yet I can't remember when or where exactly... but that's probably for the best. I prefer to focus on where I can find GOOD (or, at the very least, serviceable) pizza.

What does Jesus have to do with this?

  • @rnw2739

It has everything to do with Jesus. Although it is shamefully overlooked and undocumented in the Bible, Jesus himself became addicted to cough syrup for a time. His craving for it became so strong at one point, he made several attempts to convert water into it using his divine abilities. Naturally, God intervened and made sure all Jesus' efforts failed - the closest he came to success was the night he transformed an entire jug of water into stagnant Lemsip. Obviously, the Bethlehem pharmacy refused to sell him any and eventually his desperation to obtain some cough syrup became so unbearable, he broke into the pharmacy to steal their stock but God turned the straps on his sandals transform into liquorice bootlace, knowing nobody could scale a Nazareth wall barefoot and risk verrucas, bunions and other foot complaints that the pharmacy had no provision for. Jesus of course, overcame his addiction but the evidence of his addiction and ordeal remains to this day - It is a criminal offence be within 200 yards of a chemist in Bethlehem after dark, punishable by death.
