Greatest Mephisto ever !!! just the right character (!), limitless virtuosity, boundless spirit, taste in every touch, endless beauty, total individuality, and the perfect combination of a complete disciplinary artist-pianist carrying a spontaneous, fiery, totally free-willed spirit of true genius, playing directly from his heart, soul and imagination. The ultimate communicator !! For me - Sultanov along with Martha Argerich are globally the two greatest miracles of the piano since Horowitz. It's only symbolic that Alexei won the Cliburn competition in exactly the same year of Horowitz's passing ! and it is just as symbolic that he did not survive a long life and career in a world which has long ago lost its own vision & communication with the Gods of Passion and Sincerity. Sultanov was the embodiment of that very sincerity and passion. And he was burnt in the middle right between his transcendental fire and the scandal it often prompted when meeting the academic, dreary world of phony 'experts' reigning in the current universe of music's critique & business. Yet legends like his are so rarely found and gifted to us - and they cannot die ! I believe that Sultanov's legacy is yet to inspire generations of future artists in a corrected and artistically-transformed world. It may take a few generations - but that day will come !! Thank you, dear Alexei Sultanov, for everything you have given us during your short - but so meaningful life !!! BRAVISSIMO !!!!!!!!!!

I'm sorry, but I hear a lot of banging in this recording. Sure the technique is there, but does he have to bang out every chord in opening section (listen around 0:40). Lots of banging around 1:37 and 2:25. 4:16 is too fast and sounds frenzied. In addition, Sultanov does some strange voicing in the un poco meno mosso section (around 5:15). It doesn't have the haunting quality that it should have. Banging at 7:03 to 7:15. 8:38 to 8:47 is a sloppy mess. Too bad he died so young (35)! William Kapell died young too (he was only 31), and he has a recording of this waltz that, I'm sorry to say, blows away Sultanov's. Kapell was all of 22 years old when he recorded it. He never bangs and he always voices to perfection: kzread.info/dash/bejne/oZqYtNWvcqvHYZc.html

@@j.d.miller4203 There's really no arguing matters of taste but Kappel lacks that sultry tenderness in the last section before the final coda as well as kind of rushes it and then he completely alters that coda in a really odd unsatisfying way. And I think there's plenty of banging from Kappel as well. That's just the cost of triple fortes, bruh. I don't know. I'd never heard it before so thanks for providing the link. I can't say it hit me as hard as Sultanov here but it was a formidable statement. It's also difficult to compare due to the production quality. It'd be interesting if the record crackles could be minimized and a similar big hall reverb applied, what Kappel's performance would sound like. And man, both of those guys gone so young. Absolutely devastating 😢 💔 Oh, another thing about Sultanov that I and I think many others love is that he's got that controlled fury. I mean, someone else that comes to mind us Katia Buniatishvilli. That girl also plays in a really unhinged way but oftentimes it's to the point of getting way too sloppy. Like she's making a caricature out of that sort of thing. I honestly can't enjoy it at that point. Sultanov is unhinged and it can be rough around the edges but it never gets intoleraby sloppy. Not to my taste anyway.
