Alexei being the Worst Father Ever

Ойын-сауық

Alexei aka Red guardian has to be the worst father ever.
Although Red Guardian is quite iconic and did raise natasha and yelena and is funny he has some funny moments.
Like yelena belova being an ICON, or Natasha and Yelena best moments.

He was a terrible father figure, but he did love his girls in his own screwed up way. I loved that someone pointed out he had their names tattooed together on his shoulder. So he did remember them. Even if he is a ass. He's just as much a product of the environment as they are.

He really believed in what the USSR and Red Room were doing. From his point of view, Natasha and Yelena got training, education, a career and security, while doing badass stuff and exploding things, just like he wanted to do. Not unlike parents that insist their children all be doctors or military, and not some idealist thing like painter, social activist or superhero.

The way Alexei talks about the girls and what they were doing such as shooting people, doing missions, etc. It sounded like something a parent would do whenever their kids achieve something. It sounded like he was genuinely proud of their achievements in a fuck up way. Alexei does loves his girls but shows it in his own way where from a normal perspective may seem fuck up and morally questionable. But from his perspective, he doesn't see what he doing to them is wrong because he grow up from a bad background where he think violence, and brutal training is how you show love. None of these characters grow up normally and all they have fuck up ways of showing that they care about each other. To me, it somewhat of a twisted, cruel yet endearing relationship.

Love the way Alexei, Melina, Natasha and Yelena are the perfect portrayal of a disfunctional family. Alexei and Mileena are the type of parents who were indoctrinated into harmful ideologies since they were young, and aren’t able to tell the difference between good and bad decisions. All the words they speak, every action they take was for the sake of a cause that raised them but never cared for them. And that’s exactly what they gave Yelena and Natasha. They loved and cared for both of them but they were never able to let go of the harmful ideologies they were raised with and now that their children have grown up despising them they’re not sure why. Because on some sick twisted level they genuinely believed that what they were doing was for the good of their daughters. And every time Alexei tries to mend that relationship he says something egotistical that ruins the point he’s trying to make. That’s why they both took actions in the end instead of just saying they were sorry. They knew no words they could say would ever be right so they helped Nat and Yelena do the only thing they knew could help them gain their trust again.

Well I mean damn, Thanos is a straight up child abductor and torturer who commits mass genocide. He isn't even really a father at all - he's more comparable to a violent warlord who murders a child's entire family and then recruits that child into his cult as a soldier. Odin is *also* a child abductor (Loki) and abuser who brutally conquered and enslaved other planets with his daughter-turned-weapon who he discarded once he didn't need her anymore, and committed mass genocide and then lied about it. Oh and he taught his son (Loki) to hate his own race, and thus himself, so there's that. Laufey abandoned his infant child to die, left out in the freezing elements of his ice planet, so he gets a dishonorable mention. And Ego...gave his son's beloved mom *cancer* cause he didn't want to commit, and abandoned his son til he came of age or something. Like...if this is what Alexei is going against for the title of "worst dad of the millennia"...then I'd say the bar is so low demons are tripping on it in hell.

He has real dad energy, just his morals are skewed. Because he's a product of his environment and upbringing as much as they are. Should he have done what he did? No. Did he have any other options? Not really. He did the best he could by them, and he did love them in his own way.

I don't know how, but David Harbour played a real Russian Batya, means "father" but in a very informal way, Russians use this word to describe exactly the kind of father like Alexei Shostakov is. Such fathers are always a little drunk and very funny, yet harmless. Brilliant acting work. As a Russian I really felt something native to me

Natasha was taken at birth and knew of the Red Room (she started training early) and the assignment. Yelena was taken at birth too, but she grew up thinking both Alexei and Melina were her real parents (mission was for three years, she had to be 2 or 3 when placed in Ohio). Alexei just didn’t know what actually went down in the Red Room. He didn’t know of the procedures, the tests, the training nor the executions of the girls who didn’t complete the training. To him, Natasha and Yelena were getting an education, security, defensive training, employment, etc. That’s what he thought. Melina knew what the Red Room did, but probably elected not to share that with him. She had her mission and he had his.

At the gas station she refers to herself as the baby sister and Natasha as her sister when reinventing her birth certificate. When Natasha mentions Alexi, Yelena responds with "Dad". In the helicopter it was "mum Melina?". Even down to the table scene where she gave her heart felt speech, she says that Melina is her mother 😥. Even though she's been hurt by them to her they are her family. Her foot in mouth, egoistical father, her practical, scientist mother, and her hero posing big sister 😅.

Alexi was a pretty good dad for how he was raised. The values he was brought up with told him that making his daughters strong by sending them to the red room was the best way to help them achieve their potential. He was doing it out of love for them and wanted them to be successful, and he was so proud of them when they became top of their fields. To him and the environment he grew up in, them assassinating people, spying, toppling governments at the highest level as the best was amazing. We think he is bad because we see murder as bad like Natasha eventually does, but to him that isn’t the case. Yes he said some selfish things like asking about Captain America and saying the mission as a family being boring, but he didn’t mean them as his daughters being boring, he meant him being a super-soldier doing menial tasks was boring. He didn’t ask about them because he clearly was keeping an eye on them over that whole time to know all the things they did. He loved his girls and always wanted the best for them, even betraying everything to protect them in the end. I think that’s a good father to me.
