I had mad respect for Volk, but with the size difference and Khabib team's grappling background I thought it would be over in R1. Boy was I wrong. This could have gone either way on the score cards, but in general Volk's performance lifts him in my eyes even more than before, win or lose

Volkanovski is just such a unique athleet. He is so athletic, bulky and yet fast, with unending cardio. And I'm not even sure he reached his peak yet.

The thing with Islam and Khabib is it’s not just wrestling they use. They use a lot of judo trips and throws and when they get you down they hold you down using their legs and hips etc which are techniques American wrestling aren’t use to that’s why guys struggle so much to get them off of them. American grappling and Dagestani grappling are just different

Yes their upper body wrestling, body locks, foot sweeps are supreme. American wrestling traditionally were more focused on grit and conditioning and less technique. Dagestan wrestling always focused on technique and what's effective for MMa not just wrestling and expecting it to naturally transfe American wrestling is getting much better now with David Taylor, Dake, Cox, Burroughs they use way more technique and defense now. Bo nickal is a great prospect from today's era

lol, Islam is going to kill him, Islam via vegas is a -432 favorite right now. To put the figure into perspective, when khabib fought mcgregor, khaibib was like -300. The point that I am trying to make is that money talks and bullshit walks. In other words, the money is all on Islam. I really admire Khabib, he was primarily responsible for Islam's title shot, he called the win before the fight, and now stepped away, and being the man that khabib is, I don't think he would've stepped away if he felt that Islam needed him for this fight. I don't think Islam will lose another fight before he retires.

I have no doubt Volk is strong enough and he has the edge on speed imo the thing he needs to really worry and unfortunately he'll realize that during the fight is Islam 's understanding of weight distribution. Even though Volk is a cardio monster it's gonna drain him trying to get back up. And if he doesn't get up that's where ground and pound starts.

It’s technique, balance, and weight distribution, things you learn from literally having trained grappling since you were 4, Im a purple belt in Bjj, and have been for 4 years, I’ve rolled with black belts who do a “day one beginner move” with such precision, it feels completely different. That’s when I realized its how you do the move, the hidden details. Volk doesn’t even have a training partner who is as good as Islam. These guys think they know what it’s gonna be like, but they don’t. They all look shell shocked after the first round. He’s gonna get dragged to the mat and suffocated. It’s like Conor’s power left hand in his prime, it’s just different

@@pablodebella7695 true you can see the insane physique of Islam and I agree 100%. However did you see the fight he had against a 23 year old Arman Tsarukyan? The kid went toe to toe with Islam and it was pretty much a 50-50 fight. Also I do think alot of these guys in 155 and UFC in general get alot of hype. Oliveira was overrated in my opinion. Got almost ko'd in every fight and everyone was scared to pounce so essentially he became champion through a very unconventional method. It was just a matter of time until he got exposed. As for the Volk he is pure heart, highly technical and built like a tank. He is also a half Greek Aussie just like me so I may be a bit biased. I also see Islam being KOd (he went limp when Oliveira upkicked him) by the Volk....very interesting fight is all I can say

I'm all for volk this time hope he gets it done. Nothing against Islam but I've seen volk written off so many times and he just has that heart that champion mindset. Can't deny it anymore. He's one of the best if he gets it done.

All due respect to Alex, but Islam has been doing wrestling since he was a kid under Khabib's father. Islam also is naturally bigger than Volk. Those are two very big factors that make him a different beast.

I am a big fan of Charles, but his strength was never tactics. He relied a lot on causing chaos and finding an opening in there. Which was hella exciting, but tactically speaking easy to counter. That's the one thing I never saw from Charles, that people like Volk (against Max), and Islam (against Charles) have demonstrated. I'm excited to see what this brings.

I like Wolf, he is a good guy and tough fighter. I respect him, but for years I hear the exact same thing that the opponents of Khabib or Islam will cope with their wrestling.

The problem with Khabib and Islam is that a lot of guys were so worried about their wrestling that they neglected their striking which they were better at and moved back instead of forward but from earlier fights it was clear Khabib struggled against strikers applying pressure to him.

If I had to bet money, I'd bet on Islam, but I wouldn't make that bet with nearly as much confidence as I would have when he fought Oliviera, Obviously, Do Bronx is a world class fighter, but I was fairly comfortable in predicting Islam would beat him. I think Volka has a lot better chance here.

If he focuses on his wrestling than he very well could win this fight. Volk is already a great striker and he is very quick on his feet, so it will be tough for Islam to land those shots against him like they said Charles for example. If Islam doesn't out dominate Volk in wrestling which is a lot to ask for, I don't see him winning the fight.

In theory what volk says makes sense. That his footwork and speed will keep him away from islams takedowns. But that will only work in the centre of the cage. Volk is happy to fight going backwards, and Islam likes to pressure people up to the cage. This means that volk will end up against the cage sooner or later, and this is where those Dagestani fighters excel with chain wrestling. Volks mentality of worrying about the takedown when it comes is admirable yet extremely risky, it means he can strike freely but it also means he may be easier to takedown. He’s definitely backing himself, you’ve got to give him credit for hatching up such a ballsie plan. I think if he lightly pressed forward with this game plan it could work, it’s harder to shoot takedowns when you’re going backwards, and if you’re going backwards you can’t push someone up to the cage. This would make it more of a striking match, which would favour him. Also he should keep some upper cuts handy for if Islams shoots on a feint

Yeah it’s quite simple really. Islam will not be able to take Volkanovski down. So Islam is going to throw him to the ground. Hard. No one seems to understand that combat Sambo isn’t wrestling. Volkanovski is training to defend against takedowns but needs to be defending against throws and sweeps. Volk plays rough but those Dagestani boys play rougher.
