Some people are lacking common sense, so let's explain this at a Kindergarten level. For the love of God, Alex is almost 72 years old....there are people his age in the nursing home and a lot more people his age that are dead already. Wake Up!!! He has more money than Wolfgang's grandkids could ever spend. Van Halen's last show was in October 2015 - almost a decade ago, so this is not a new "retirement" now. At age 72, everyone realizes you are not going to be around forever and you need to get rid of a lot of shit you don't need or use anymore. Also, when age 72 is coming up, it's extremely unlikely that Alex could play all the VH songs at the high level we were used to hearing from him, especially with having profound hearing loss in both ears. So do not look for him to ever play again. Alex's book is probably the final encore of his career and very likely the last time anything from him will be released.

Perfect reply as well as @bb-gc2t. We tend to forget how old these guys actually are and how long ago it's been since they actually toured. Look at your parents and then think about what you expect from somebody in their 70s. I'm 48 with parents in their 70s and I'm happy that my parents can still walk, one with a walker, much less expect them to go on a world tour anymore. Some of these guys have continued touring and have stayed in touring shape. As @bb-gc2tx said, we tend to forget that 2015 was over ten years ago. A decade in over-middle-aged people who haven't been out touring in that long.

Exactly and a lot of the stuff he’s getting rid of is more or less broken down junk by today’s standards. It’s just famous broken down junk. A quality new Ludwig or other set is well within his reach if he needs one. Bits and pieces of a set designed for entertaining an arena in 1982 has no practical application for him so it needs to go. Not hard to understand.

The band has been his ENTIRE life, and that life ALWAYS included his brother. With Eddie now gone from this planet, Alex is simply putting the exclamation point at the end of the statement: "Van Halen is OVER!" The death of a loved one often sparks some thoughts of "existentialism." Alex now realizes that he, like all of us, is on this Earth for a limited time. He likely wants to do OTHER things with his life than play in a rock & roll band. Peace be with you, Alex! 😊

The VH band is officially defunct now. It was defunct since after October 6, 2020 and it was on hiatus since Oct 2015. Wolf won't play any VH music in his band Mammoth WVH, he wants to be different now than when he was in VH with his father. He did NOT want to replace his father as lead guitarist, so that meant VH was done the moment Eddie passed. Sammy Hagar and Mike Anthony are touring this July and August with Jason Bonham and Joe Satriani, it's the closest we are going to get to VH live again. I thought David Lee Roth wanted to retire, but then he made new stuff including VH covers like a remake of Jump and he was willing to join Hagar on his tour this summer. Dave will sing again if given the opportunity, it doesn't matter to him that Ed is gone, he sang VH songs already outside of VH after he left the first time in 1985. But now it appears that Dave will only make a few guest visits on Hagar's tour or even not at all. Hagar is going to sing some Roth era VH songs on his tour. Like Runnin' with the Devil, Panama, etc.

The relationship between a guitarist and a drummer can get really deep, unless you’re the typical LA band. The fact they’re actual brothers is even deeper. I played with a drummer for about 8 years and we knew what the other was thinking before we thought it. I played with many drummers since then but still miss that connection with that particular drummer, funny thing is we never even talked to each other that much, but would be working incredibly long hours and putting stuff together while being totally honest and not have a clue about each other’s personal lives. I could imagine what Alex is going through and at his age why bother just enjoy however many more seasons you have, it took me years to move on once the relationship disintegrated. It wasn’t bad or anything it was just time to do something different, although we would still jam together from time to time and everything would just fall into place like no time lost. It was even more enjoyable because it had nothing to do with business, just jamming. A good drummer can keep time and hold it down, a great drummer can lead and take you into a place of not having to think and allow a you to improvise, feel and land on your feet. So I totally get what Ed must have felt about Al.

In case anybody's not aware, Van Halen obviously was one of the biggest, brightest, groundbreaking rock bands in history. Being a professional guitar player for over 30 years my respect for Eddie knows no bounds. That being said that band would never have sounded the way it did without each entity in the band. No one sings and plays bass like Mikey, Alex has a sound that he generates on his ride cymbals like no other drummer, it's very trademark to his playing. Don't even get me started on Diamond Dave, He is absolutely a genius poet. And that leaves Ed, he will go down in history like Beethoven or Mozart and rightly so. That band would not be the band it is today (not today exactly) without each entity, this auction is pretty amazing, especially if you're a fan and can secure some of his equipment. Rock on AVH, The world will never be the same without you and your brother.

Ed has told me years ago that Al was most important to him: he always needed his brother's back up and opinion with everything he was doing, Ed's own words. The brothers had a very unique close bond. If one of them had an idea, the other was creating it already. It does not surprise me Al is selling all his VH stuff because to him it will never be the same without Ed. Al's book will be the final closing statement of the long VH band episode together with his soulmate and brother. Al sufferes from huge hearing loss and I know what that is like. And there is something else I would like to mention: people who are very famous are suffering from pressure because everybody wants something out of them: being Dutch, I have lived abroad long enough to know that nothing in de world compares to the U.S. press and tabloids....🙈🙈and if you are the target, you say OMG and start to dig a tunnel immediately to stay underground forever 🙈💯

You lose someone as close these two brothers were and it shows how things are put into prospective. The memories will stay with him forever and the material objects don't really mean anything when you lose someone and a part of you is gone with them. I believe Alex will see his brother again just as all of us will see our loved ones when we pass . Everyone caught up with things and forget life is passing by .

I understand his pain very well. I'm 55, and lost my younger brother suddenly in 2021. I was 9 years older and raised him since he was 11. We were inseparable, concerts, movie and played hockey on the same teams for over 23 years. I was his best man at his wedding. Everything has lost its joy for me since. It is a hell on earth. I'm sorry, Alex- I feel your pain....

He's never going to use any of that stuff again. It's not like if he decided to play or go on tour right now he'd be like "hey let's pull out my kit from 1978 or 5150". Alex could sell off every piece of drum kit he's ever owned and it wouldn't matter. If he decided he wanted to play again next Thursday it's guaranteed by Friday Ludwig, Paiste, Pro Mark and Remo would send him an entire Semi trailer full of brand new sh:t. He's got all that sh:t piled up that he is never ever in a million years going to use it again. All those timeless pieces of history just locked away in a room or storage locker. It's cool that he's selling all of that sh:t. Other people are going to get to see those pieces of history and enjoy them. And he is going to get a "Fuq load" of money for it. And who knows he might be done playing. But him selling all that stuff 100% has no bearings on his intention or ability to perform again. He could have all brand new sh:t at any time he wants with one phone call.

He is retired now. The last time he played in concert with VH was in Oct 2015. They took a break then Eddie passed on Oct 6, 2020. At that point VH was done. Even Wolfgang said so. Alex will not play without his brother on guitar. it was like a family band, in fact during the final years up to 2015 it was three Van Halens and David Lee Roth. Wolf refused to replace his father in the band and he was starting his own band Mammoth WVH. He probably didn't want anyone else taking his father's spot, either so the band was done. The only former VH members still touring now are Sammy Hagar and Mike Anthony. They are doing a VH like tour this July and August and playing more VH songs. There are lots of defunct bands. Genesis with Phil Collins disbanded recently, and so did Fleetwood Mac due to Christine's passing. Her voice was an essential part of the band's sound. Some bands and singers last longer than others. Alex doesn't have to say anything. The auction means that he is done for good with touring and anything VH. You know how like a store that has been around for a while all of a sudden shutters all of its stores plus its website? That's what it's like with the band Van Halen. It's in the past now. It no longer exists. It's defunct. If you missed your chance to see them again up to Oct 2105 with David Lee Roth, then you missed the boat. The closest thing now would be to see Hagar's tour this summer.

There is a lot more of his and Edward's Christian beliefs behind this than most probably realize. Yes I'm sure Edward having GONE to another Place has got a lot to do with this motivation to LEAVE the OLD LIFE behind but remember he did become a Minister. Yes in part because HE and Edward wanted HIM to conduct Edward and Janie's marriage but also due to his ALWAYS strong belief in Christ. If you notice on the album with David Lee Roth , with Wolf on the album cover they are all in a dark area with LIGHT coming down on them from above and Edward is the only one looking UP to the Light. Remember also that Edward always thought of himself as nothing more than a conduit for God regarding his musical genius. Yes, there has always been a reverance for the Lord with these two but frankly, they've never shouted it out. Alex, you'll unquestionably SEE and BE with your little brother again. NO DOUBT.

Alex has the right to do whatever he wants. He and Eddie and the other members of VH gave it their all for decades. Alex had so much chemistry with his brother that it would have been impossible for him, professionally and emotionally, to work with any other guitarist. They were always on the same wavelength; they spoke their own language. They could switch between English and Dutch on the fly, but more than that was their ability to speak to each other musically. Van Halen never would have been what it was without that brotherly bond in music. Alex, as mentioned in the video, has substantial hearing loss, a condition I've also been dealing with since childhood, which isn't getting any better. Alex has also had many surgeries on his spin. The man has been through hell. He's a human being who gave us everything in music, and he deserves respect. If I had the money I'd buy one of his gongs, and I'd hit the thing just to cheer myself up, celebret VH, and drive my neighbors nuts. And I'm not even a drummer. I doubt I could hit the thing as hard as Alex could.

Yea, it would be nice if Alex would continue in music, as the possibilities would be endless. I'm sure we all have wondered what Al, Sam, Mikey and Wolfie could do as a band, but that's not what Al wants. And... he has earned the right to go out the way HE chooses. So, Sam and Mikey carry the torch in one way and Wolfie in another. There's never been a more appropriate time to embrace the comment, "It is what it is." RIP Edward!

They just had a connection on and off stage . You hear of how twins act with each other like one finishes each other sentences and when one hurts or sick well they were like twins . You could see how they were on stage the way they looked at each other certain ways they knew what to do in songs without saying a word. So yes it makes sense to not play anymore because to be van halen the other one Eddie is not there it's just not van halen. I'm about sad that Eddie is gone 😢❤ so I understand Alex not wanting to play anymore. Love and miss you Alex and the other guys too Rip Eddie ❤️❤️❤️.
